CCEA Geography Year 9: Case Study Practical Drills | Year 9 CCEA

📚 CCEA Geography Year 9: Case Study Practical Drills | Year 9 CCEA

Mastering case studies is the key to success in CCEA Geography. This article provides practical drills to help Year 9 students build confidence in analysing real-world events and linking them to geographical concepts. You will learn how to structure your answers, use specific detail, and think like a geographer.

1. What is a Case Study? |

In geography, a case study is a detailed example of a real place or event that we analyse to understand broader patterns and processes. It involves looking at causes, effects, and human responses in one specific context, such as an earthquake in a named country or a river flooding event in a particular town.

CCEA exam questions often ask you to ‘refer to a named example’ or ‘use a case study’. This means you cannot just give general facts; you need to recall place-specific information like dates, locations, and statistics to support your answer.

2. The Anatomy of a Good Case Study Answer |

A strong case study answer always follows a logical structure: background, causes, impacts (social, economic, environmental), and responses (short-term and long-term). It uses precise numbers and named places, and it connects the event to key concepts such as vulnerability, development, or management.

You should practise writing paragraphs that start with a clear point, then add evidence from the case study, and finally explain what this means geographically. This PEEL (Point, Evidence, Explanation, Link) approach will keep your writing focused.

这种PEEL(观点、证据、解释、联系)方法将使你的写作重点突出。

3. Gathering Background Information |

Every case study begins with context. For a natural hazard, note the date, location (including coordinates if helpful), the country’s level of development (LIC, NEE, or HIC), and the magnitude or scale of the event. For example: ‘The 2010 Haiti earthquake occurred at 16:53 local time on 12 January, 25 km west of Port-au-Prince, with a magnitude of 7.0. Haiti is an LIC in the Caribbean.’

For a human geography case study, such as urban change or migration, you need to collect population data, economic indicators, and historical trends. Having a small set of memorable facts that you can use flexibly is better than trying to remember too many details.

4. Understanding Causes and Processes |

Explain the physical or human processes that led to the event. For earthquakes, this involves plate tectonics: name the plates involved, their boundary type (destructive, conservative, constructive), and the mechanism of stress release. For flooding, discuss precipitation patterns, geology, and land use changes.

Always make sure your explanation uses the correct geographical vocabulary, such as ‘subduction’, ‘convection currents’, ‘saturated soil’, or ‘urbanisation’. This shows the examiner that you understand the science behind the case study.

5. Classifying Impacts: Social, Economic, Environmental |

Impacts must be grouped into these three categories. Social impacts include deaths, injuries, homelessness, and disruption to education and healthcare. Economic impacts involve damage costs, loss of jobs, and effects on trade and agriculture. Environmental impacts cover damage to ecosystems, landslides, water pollution, and landscape changes.

In your revision, create a simple table for each case study. For Haiti, you might note: 230,000 dead (social), $8.5 billion damage (economic), liquefaction and destruction of forests (environmental). Practise writing one sentence for each category using these details.

6. Short-Term and Long-Term Responses |

Short-term responses happen immediately after an event, usually lasting days to weeks. They include search and rescue, emergency medical aid, temporary shelter, food and water distribution. Long-term responses take months to years and involve rebuilding infrastructure, improving building codes, providing psychological support, and developing early warning systems.

When you study a case, link the type of response to the country’s wealth. In an LIC, short-term responses may depend heavily on international aid, while long-term recovery is often slow due to limited resources. In an HIC, the country can often fund its own response quickly, but the cost is much higher.

7. Featured Case Study: 2010 Haiti Earthquake |

The Haiti earthquake is a commonly used example for tectonic hazards in Year 9 CCEA Geography. It provides a clear contrast between a high-magnitude event in a low-income country and the event’s disproportionate impact. Use it to practise your analytical skills.

You can also use alternative case studies such as the 2011 Christchurch earthquake (HIC context) or the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, but Haiti offers a rich set of statistics that are easy to remember.

8. Haiti: Background and Causes |

Overview: On 12 January 2010, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck Haiti. The epicentre was approximately 25 km west of the capital, Port-au-Prince, at a shallow depth of 13 km. Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, with weak infrastructure and high population density in the capital.

The cause was movement along the Enriquillo-Plantain Garden fault system, where the Caribbean Plate slides past the North American Plate (conservative boundary). Stress built up over 250 years was suddenly released, causing intense ground shaking.

9. Haiti: Impacts in Detail |

Social impacts were devastating: an estimated 230,000 people were killed, 300,000 injured, and 1.5 million left homeless. Key government buildings, including the Presidential Palace, collapsed, and 4,000 schools were destroyed or damaged, severely disrupting education.

Economic impacts: Total damage was estimated at $8.5 billion, equivalent to 120% of Haiti’s GDP. The main port and airport were damaged, hindering trade and aid delivery. Many businesses collapsed, and the already high unemployment rose further.

Environmental impacts: Landslides in mountainous areas blocked roads, and soil liquefaction occurred in coastal zones. Water sources became contaminated with sewage, increasing the risk of cholera outbreaks, which indeed followed months later.

10. Haiti: Responses and Recovery |

Short-term response: International search and rescue teams arrived within 48 hours, but lack of coordination made operations difficult. The UN and NGOs set up displacement camps for over 1 million people. Emergency food, water, and medical care reached the area, though distribution was uneven.

Long-term response: The international community pledged $10 billion in aid, but only a fraction was actually delivered due to logistical and political challenges. Rebuilding was slow; even a decade later, many people still lived in temporary shelters. Building codes were revised and some new hospitals were built, but long-term resilience remained low.

The Haiti response illustrates the difficulties of disaster recovery in an LIC: reliance on external aid, weak governance, and pre-existing poverty that magnified the crisis.

11. Applying Your Case Study to Exam Questions |

Typical CCEA questions might ask: ‘Using a named example, explain the causes of an earthquake’ or ‘Assess the effectiveness of the response to a tectonic hazard.’ To prepare, write out model answers that blend factual detail with analysis.

For the causes question, your answer could begin: ‘The 2010 Haiti earthquake was caused by stress release along a conservative plate boundary where the Caribbean Plate slid past the North American Plate. The shallow focus of 13 km increased the destructive power…’ Always include named places and precise data.

For an evaluation question, make a judgement: ‘The response was largely ineffective because…’, then support it with evidence such as the slow delivery of aid and the cholera outbreak. Acknowledge any successful aspects to show balance.

12. Practice Drills to Sharpen Your Skills |

Drill 1: Read a news article about a recent natural disaster and fill in a template: background, causes, 3 social / 3 economic / 3 environmental impacts, 2 short-term and 2 long-term responses. Time yourself for 15 minutes.

Drill 2: Swap case studies with a partner and quiz each other on key facts. You should be able to recall the date, location, magnitude, and at least five specific impact or response details without notes.

Drill 3: Write a full 6-mark answer to a past CCEA question using Haiti or another case study. Then self-assess using the mark scheme. Look for places where you could add more precise terminology or named data.

Regular practice using these drills will turn your case study knowledge from passive memory into an active toolkit for the exam.
