📚 Chemistry Vocabulary Quick-Memorisation Guide |

Mastering key chemistry terms is essential for success in Year 9 CIE Chemistry. This guide not only defines the most important vocabulary but also offers creative memory aids, analogies and mnemonics to make recall faster and more effective.

1. States of Matter and Energy |

The three common states of matter are solid, liquid and gas. In solids, particles are tightly packed in a regular arrangement and only vibrate in place. In liquids, particles are close together but can move past each other. In gases, particles are far apart and move rapidly in all directions.

Memory aid: Think of a crowded dance floor – in a solid, everyone stands still; in a liquid, people move a little; in a gas, everyone runs wildly. Mnemonic: ‘S-L-G, Stand-Little-Go!’

The energy changes involved in state changes: melting, freezing, boiling, evaporation, condensation, sublimation and deposition. Energy is absorbed to break forces (endothermic) and released when forces form (exothermic).

Memory trick: ‘MELT’ demands heat, so melting is endothermic. ‘FREEZE’ frees heat, so freezing is exothermic. Also, sublimation is from solid directly to gas – imagine a submarine surfacing quickly (sub-lim-ation).
