Drama Terminology Quick-Memorisation Guide |

📚 Drama Terminology Quick-Memorisation Guide |

Mastering the language of drama is the first step to excelling in your SQA Year 9 assessments. This guide presents key terms in a structured way, with memory aids to help you recall them quickly during rehearsals, written exams, and practical performances.

1. Stage Directions |

Upstage (US): The part of the stage furthest from the audience. When an actor moves upstage, they move away from the viewers, creating a sense of distance or withdrawal. Memory trick: think ‘up’ as in moving ‘up’ a hill, away from the crowd.

Downstage (DS): The area of the stage closest to the audience. Moving downstage brings the actor nearer to the front, often for emphasis or intimacy. Remember ‘down’ is down towards the front row.

Stage Left (SL): The left side of the stage from the actor’s perspective when facing the audience. However, the audience sees this as their right. Use the phrase ‘actor’s left is audience right’ to avoid confusion.

Stage Right (SR): The right side of the stage from the performer’s viewpoint. The audience sees this as their left. Together with SL, remember: ‘Stage left – audience right; stage right – audience left.’

Centre Stage (CS): The exact middle of the acting area. It naturally draws the audience’s focus and is often used for key moments or power positions. Recall CS as the ‘central focus’.

Prompt Side (PS) / Opposite Prompt (OP): Traditional UK theatre terms. Prompt Side is the left side of the stage from the actor’s view (where the prompter traditionally sat). Opposite Prompt is the right side. These are older terms but still used in some SQA contexts.

2. Performance Skills – Voice |

Projection: Controlling breath and resonance so the voice carries clearly to the back of the auditorium without shouting. Think of it as ‘sending’ your voice, not straining your throat.

Articulation: The crisp, clear pronunciation of consonants and vowels. Tongue twisters are a great warm-up for this. Link it to ‘articulate’ – clear and precise.

Pitch: The highness or lowness of the voice. Varying pitch prevents a monotone delivery and can indicate emotion – high pitch for excitement, low for seriousness.

Pace: The speed of speech. A fast pace may suggest urgency or panic; a slow pace can create tension or show thoughtfulness. Remember: pace = speed, not volume.

Pause: A deliberate stop in speech. Used to build suspense, allow the audience to absorb a moment, or signal a shift in thought. A pause is not a mistake; it’s a powerful tool.

Tone: The emotional quality of the voice. Tone can convey warmth, sarcasm, authority, or sadness without changing the words. It’s not what you say, but how you say it.

Volume: The loudness or softness of the voice. Varying volume helps highlight certain lines and shows character dynamics. Soft can be as powerful as loud when used intentionally.

Intonation: The rise and fall pattern of speech. In English, rising intonation often indicates a question, falling intonation a statement. In drama, intonation reveals subtext and attitude.

Emphasis: Stressing a particular word or syllable. A single emphasised word can change the entire meaning of a line. Try saying ‘I never said she stole my money’ with emphasis on different words – the meaning shifts each time.

3. Performance Skills – Movement |

Gesture: A movement of the hand, arm, or head that expresses meaning. Gestures can be descriptive (pointing) or emotional (clenched fists). Remember: a gesture speaks when words cannot.

Posture: The way a character holds their body. Slumped shoulders may show defeat; an upright, open chest conveys confidence. Posture is the spine of character physicality.

Gait: A character’s manner of walking. A shuffle, stride, or tiptoe tells the audience about age, mood, and social status. Always ask: how does this character walk?

Facial Expression: Using the face to show emotions. The eyes, eyebrows, and mouth are the most expressive features. Practice in a mirror to see how subtle changes affect meaning.

Blocking: The planned movement and positioning of actors on stage. It includes entrances, exits, and crosses. Think of it as the ‘choreography’ of the performance.

Stance: How a character stands – feet apart, weight shifted, knees locked, etc. Stance suggests readiness, nervousness, or authority. Even standing still communicates.

Levels: Using different heights on stage (standing, sitting, lying, on a platform) to show status or create visual interest. Higher levels often suggest power. Low status characters might kneel or sit on the floor.

Proxemics: The use of distance between characters. Close proximity indicates intimacy or aggression; far distance suggests alienation or fear. Think of proxemics as the ‘personal space vocabulary’ of drama.

4. Drama Conventions |

Monologue: A long speech by one character delivered to other characters on stage. It reveals thoughts or advances the plot while other characters listen. Not to be confused with a soliloquy.

Soliloquy: A speech in which a character speaks their inner thoughts aloud, usually alone on stage, addressing the audience or themselves. Shakespeare used this to great effect. Key difference: no other characters are meant to hear it.

Aside: A brief remark spoken directly to the audience that other characters on stage cannot hear. It often delivers a secret, a joke, or a true feeling. Think of it as breaking the fourth wall for a moment.

Tableau (Freeze Frame): A still image created by actors using their bodies to represent a scene, emotion, or idea. Often used to highlight a critical moment. It’s like a living photograph.

Thought Tracking: A technique where characters speak their inner thoughts aloud during a freeze or at a key moment. It gives the audience direct access to hidden emotions.

Narration: A character or external voice tells part of the story directly to the audience. It can guide the audience, provide background, or comment on the action. Use narration to control the pace and perspective.

Flashback / Flash-forward: A scene that jumps back or forward in time. Flashbacks explain backstory; flash-forwards suggest future consequences. They break linear chronology for dramatic effect.

5. Forms and Structures |

Linear Structure: Events unfold in chronological order from beginning to end. Most traditional plays follow this path. Like a straight line: A → B → C.

Non-linear Structure: The story jumps around in time, using flashbacks, flash-forwards, or fragmented scenes. It can create mystery or show different perspectives. Puzzles the audience but deepens engagement.

Episodic Structure: A series of loosely connected scenes or episodes, often with a common theme or character. TV series are episodic; some plays adapt this form. Each episode can almost stand alone.

Climactic Structure: The action builds steadily towards a decisive climax late in the play. Often used in tragedies, where tension rises inevitably. Everything leads to one peak moment.

One-act Play: A complete play performed in a single act, usually shorter. There is no intermission, so the tension must be sustained. Compact and intense.

Full-length Play: A play structured in multiple acts, typically two. It has an intermission, allowing for time leaps or location changes. The standard format for most mainstream theatre.

Comedy, Tragedy, Melodrama, Farce: Four key genres. Comedy ends happily and provokes laughter. Tragedy follows a noble character to disaster. Melodrama exaggerates emotion and action, often with clear heroes and villains. Farce relies on absurd situations, mistaken identity, and physical humour.

6. Script and Text Features |

Dialogue: The spoken exchanges between characters. It drives the plot, reveals character, and creates rhythm. Good dialogue sounds natural but is carefully crafted.

Stage Directions: Instructions in the script that describe movement, setting, lighting, sound, and character actions. Usually printed in italics or brackets. Always read stage directions – they contain the playwright’s vision.

Act: A major division in a play. A traditional full-length play has two acts. Acts are usually separated by an intermission. Think of acts as large chapters.

Scene: A subdivision of an act. A new scene often indicates a change of location or time. Scenes help pace the narrative. Several scenes make up one act.

Prologue: An introductory speech or scene that sets the scene or gives background before the main action. Shakespeare often used a prologue. It’s the opening appetiser.

Epilogue: A closing speech or scene that concludes the play, often directly addressing the audience. It can wrap up loose ends or deliver a final message. The bookend to the prologue.

Subtext: The underlying meaning beneath the spoken words – what a character really thinks or feels but does not say directly. Actors must play the subtext, not just the lines.

Character List (Dramatis Personae): The list of characters at the beginning of a script, often with brief descriptions. Useful for understanding relationships before reading.

7. Rehearsal and Devising Terms |

Devising: Creating an original piece of theatre collaboratively, often from a stimulus rather than a pre-existing script. The group generates the content, dialogue, and movement. Devising is theatre ‘from scratch’.

Stimulus: The starting point for devising – could be a poem, image, news article, piece of music, or object. It sparks ideas and themes. Always explore what the stimulus makes you feel, not just what it shows.

Improvisation (Improv): Unscripted performance where actors create dialogue and action spontaneously. It builds spontaneity and deepens character understanding. Use ‘Yes, and…’ to keep improvised scenes alive.

Hot Seating: A character is questioned by the group while staying in role. It helps actors deepen their understanding of the character’s backstory and motivation. Ask unexpected questions to reveal hidden layers.

Role on the Wall: A visual tool where an outline of a character is drawn, and information about the character (feelings, facts, traits) is written inside and outside the outline. Inside = inner thoughts; outside = what others see.

Storyboarding: Drawing a sequence of key scenes or moments on cards or frames, like a comic strip. It helps visualise the flow of a devised piece. You don’t need to be an artist – stick figures work!

Marking the Moment: Identifying and highlighting the most important moment in a scene or piece. Directors use this to ensure the audience focuses on the crucial point. It’s often signalled by a change in pace, lighting, or a freeze.

8. Production Roles |

Director: Responsible for the overall artistic vision. The director interprets the script, guides actors, and collaborates with designers to create a unified production. The captain of the theatrical ship.

Stage Manager: The organisational backbone of a production. They run rehearsals, record blocking, call cues during performances, and ensure everything runs smoothly backstage. They are the ‘show caller’ – without them, chaos.

Playwright: The writer of the play. They create the dialogue, characters, and structure. In devised work, the whole group may act as playwright. Respect the playwright’s text – it’s your foundation.

Set Designer: Creates the visual environment of the play using scenery, furniture, and props. They establish time, place, and mood. The set is the world the characters inhabit.

Costume Designer: Designs what characters wear, reflecting their personality, status, period, and the play’s tone. Costumes can instantly communicate character. What you wear says who you are on stage.

Lighting Designer: Plans lighting effects to create atmosphere, focus attention, indicate time of day, and enhance visual storytelling. Light paints the stage.

Sound Designer: Responsible for all audio elements – underscore, sound effects, and amplification. Sound shapes the audience’s emotional response. Sound can be invisible but unforgettable.

9. Technical Theatre – Lighting |

Floodlight: A basic light that covers a wide area with soft, diffuse illumination. Often used for general washes or to light backdrops. Think ‘flood’ – spreading everywhere.

Spotlight (Profile): A focused beam of light that creates a hard-edged circle. Used to highlight a single performer or small area. This is the ‘look at me’ light.

Fresnel: A type of spotlight with a stepped lens that produces a soft-edged beam, ideal for blending with other lights
