Each entry breaks down a fundamental concept into its building blocks, making revision straightforward and memorable.

1. Semiotics Formula |

The semiotics formula states that every sign is made of two inseparable parts: Sign = Signifier + Signified.

The signifier is the physical form we can see, hear or touch — such as a word, an image or a sound.

The signified is the mental concept or meaning that the signifier triggers in our mind.

For instance, a red rose (signifier) often carries the signified of ‘romance’ or ‘love’ in many cultures.

This core idea, pioneered by Ferdinand de Saussure, reminds us that meaning is constructed, not natural.

2. Todorov’s Narrative Structure Formula |

Todorov’s formula describes the typical shape of a story in five stages: Equilibrium → Disruption → Recognition → Repair → New Equilibrium.

The narrative begins with a stable situation where everything is in order.

Then a disruptive event shatters that harmony, creating a problem the characters must face.

The characters recognise the disruption and set out to repair the damage through a quest or confrontation.

Finally, a new equilibrium is achieved, often showing how the world has changed or learned from the journey.

3. Propp’s Character Roles Formula |

Vladimir Propp identified seven recurring character functions in folk tales, which can be treated as a character formula: Hero + Villain + Dispatcher + Helper + Donor + Princess + False Hero.

The hero typically embarks on a quest, often aided by a magical helper or an object from the donor.

The villain opposes the hero, while the dispatcher sends the hero on the mission and the princess is often the reward or victim.

A false hero may initially appear good but later betrays or fails the test, providing contrast to the true hero.

Applying these categories helps Media students spot predictable patterns in everything from fairy tales to blockbuster films.

4. Uses and Gratifications Formula |

Blumler and Katz proposed that audiences actively choose media to satisfy specific needs, summarised as PIES: Personal Identity, Information, Integration and Social Interaction, Entertainment.

Personal identity refers to reinforcing our own values or finding characters we can relate to and learn from.

Information satisfies our curiosity about the world, keeping us informed about news, weather or educational content.

Integration and social interaction explain why we discuss programmes with friends or feel part of a fan community.

Entertainment offers escape, relaxation and aesthetic pleasure, from comedies to music videos.

5. Representation Equation |

The representation equation can be written as: Representation = Selection + Construction + Anchorage.

Media producers select only certain aspects of reality to highlight — a deliberate act that shapes meaning.

They then construct the representation through camera work, editing, sound and mise-en-scène to create a particular version of people, places or ideas.

Finally, anchorage, often through captions or voice-overs, directs the audience towards a preferred interpretation, limiting ambiguity.

6. Camera Language Equation |

Visual meaning in media can be broken down using the camera language equation: Shot Size + Angle + Movement = Visual Language.

Shot size, from extreme long shot to extreme close-up, determines how much of the subject is shown and the emotional distance.

Camera angle positions the viewer: a low angle makes a character look powerful, while a high angle suggests vulnerability.

Movement, such as panning, tracking, or a steady handheld shake, creates dynamism and can convey urgency or intimacy.

7. Encoding/Decoding Formula |

Stuart Hall’s model can be written as: Encoding → Message → Decoding, where audiences adopt dominant, negotiated or oppositional readings.

Encoding is the producer’s process of embedding intended meanings using media language.

The dominant reading occurs when the audience accepts the preferred meaning exactly as intended.

A negotiated reading accepts some of the intended meaning but modifies it with personal experience or scepticism.

An oppositional reading completely rejects the intended message, understanding it but consciously adopting an alternative viewpoint.

8. Media Ownership Integration Models |

Ownership in the media industry can be expressed as two integration formulae: Vertical Integration = owning production + distribution + exhibition; Horizontal Integration = owning multiple media outlets at the same stage.

Vertical integration allows a company to control the entire chain, from creating content to delivering it to audiences, which reduces costs and secures markets.

Horizontal integration builds market power by acquiring competitors or similar businesses across different platforms, such as a publisher owning several magazine titles.

These models help explain why a small number of conglomerates dominate global media output and shape cultural diversity.

9. News Values Formula |

Galtung and Ruge’s news values can be summarised as a checklist formula: News Value = Impact + Timeliness + Prominence + Proximity + Conflict + Novelty + Human Interest.

Impact refers to how many people are affected; a major flood has higher news value than a puddle.

Timeliness means recent events get priority, with ‘breaking news’ often interrupting scheduled programming.

Prominence involves famous individuals or institutions; a royal wedding easily tops the news agenda.

Proximity, both geographical and cultural, heightens relevance for the audience, while conflict and novelty grab attention through drama or unusualness.

Human interest stories add emotional appeal, making complex issues feel personal and relatable.

10. Media Effects Hypotheses |

Two contrasting effects models form a simple comparison: Hypodermic Needle Model = passive, uniform audience ← direct message injection; Two-Step Flow = opinion leaders filter and reinterpret media for others.

The hypodermic needle theory suggests media messages are injected straight into the minds of a passive audience, causing immediate and uniform effects.

The two-step flow model, proposed by Lazarsfeld, argues that media content first reaches opinion leaders who then interpret it and pass it on to less active viewers.

While the hypodermic model is now seen as oversimplified, it still surfaces in moral panics about violent games or social media.

The two-step flow remains relevant when influencers and community leaders shape how audiences understand news and advertising.
