Muscles work in pairs to move bones at joints. When one muscle contracts (shortens), the opposite muscle relaxes. These are called antagonistic pairs. Knowing the main muscles helps you explain how your body performs skills.

7. The Cardiovascular and Respiratory Systems | 心血管与呼吸系统

The cardiovascular system consists of the heart, blood, and blood vessels. Its main job is to deliver oxygen and nutrients to working muscles and remove waste products like carbon dioxide. Exercise makes the heart beat faster and stronger.

心血管系统由心脏、血液和血管组成。其主要功能是为工作肌肉输送氧气和养分,并清除二氧化碳等废物。运动会使心跳更快、更有力。

Meanwhile, the respiratory system includes the lungs and airways. When you breathe in, air enters the lungs and oxygen passes into the blood. When you breathe out, carbon dioxide is expelled. During physical activity, breathing rate and depth increase to supply more oxygen.

A simple way to monitor intensity is by using heart rate. A common formula for a rough estimate of your maximum heart rate is:

8. Principles of Training (FITT) | 训练原则(FITT)

To improve any component of fitness, you need to apply the FITT principles. FITT stands for Frequency, Intensity, Time, and Type. Overloading these variables gradually forces the body to adapt and become fitter.

  • Frequency – How often you exercise. For cardiovascular improvements, three to five sessions per week are recommended.

  • Intensity – How hard you work. This can be measured through heart rate, perceived exertion, or the talk test.

  • Type – The kind of exercise. To improve swimming speed, you need to swim; to build flexibility, you choose stretching or yoga.

A gradual increase, also known as progressive overload, is key. Adding too much too soon increases the risk of injury.

Good nutrition fuels performance and supports growth. A balanced diet for a Year 8 student should include carbohydrates for energy, proteins for muscle repair, healthy fats for long-lasting fuel, and plenty of vitamins and minerals from fruit and vegetables.
