1. Mastering Variables and Hypotheses |

In any experiment, the independent variable (IV) is what the researcher changes or manipulates, while the dependent variable (DV) is what is measured. A frequent error is confusing the two; for example, when investigating whether noise affects memory, noise is the IV and memory performance is the DV.

When writing a hypothesis, it must be operationalised – that is, both the IV and DV must be stated in clear, measurable terms. A weak hypothesis such as ‘people will do worse’ becomes testable when written as ‘participants in the loud noise condition will recall fewer words from a list of 20 than those in the silent condition’.

2. Ethical Considerations in Research |

AQA examiners love to ask about ethical issues. Key principles include informed consent, right to withdraw, protection from harm, confidentiality and debriefing. Many students lose marks by only naming an ethical issue without explaining how it applies in the scenario.

A common pitfall is suggesting that ‘anonymity’ can be achieved simply by not using names, but researchers must also avoid reporting data that could identify a participant (e.g. a unique combination of age and school name). Always link your point to the specific study.

3. The Multi-Store Model of Memory |

Atkinson and Shiffrin’s model describes three stores: sensory register, short-term memory (STM) and long-term memory (LTM). Information moves from sensory register to STM via attention, and from STM to LTM through rehearsal. Without rehearsal, information is lost through displacement or decay.

Many students confuse the coding, capacity and duration of each store. For example, STM is coded acoustically, has a capacity of 5–9 items, and a duration of about 18–30 seconds. LTM is coded semantically, with potentially unlimited capacity and duration. A typical mistake is stating STM lasts several minutes, or that LTM is coded visually.
