1. Revenue Formula |

Revenue (or sales revenue) is the total amount of money a business receives from selling its products or services in a given period. It is calculated using a simple multiplication.

Revenue = Price per unit × Quantity sold

Price per unit (P) is the selling price of one item. Quantity sold (Q) is the number of units purchased by customers. Revenue does not subtract any costs — it is the ‘top line’ of a business.

Example: A bookshop sells 150 notebooks at $4 each. Revenue = 4 × 150 = $600.

2. Total Costs and Cost Types |

Total costs are the full amount a business pays to produce and deliver its goods or services. They are split into two main types: fixed costs and variable costs.

Total costs = Fixed costs + Variable costs

Fixed costs stay the same regardless of how many units are produced (e.g. rent, insurance, salaries of permanent staff). They must be paid even if output is zero.

Variable costs change directly with the level of output (e.g. raw materials, packaging, piece-rate wages). As you produce more, these costs rise proportionally.

Example: A bakery has monthly fixed costs of $2,000 and variable costs of $1.50 per loaf. If it makes 1,000 loaves, total costs = 2,000 + (1.50 × 1,000) = $3,500.

3. Profit Calculation |

Profit is the financial gain a business makes once all costs have been deducted from revenue. It is the ultimate measure of success for most firms.

Profit = Total revenue − Total costs

If revenue exceeds total costs, the business makes a profit. If total costs are greater than revenue, it makes a loss.

Gross profit focuses on the difference between revenue and the cost of making the product (cost of sales), while net profit subtracts all other expenses such as rent, salaries and marketing. For Year 9, you can start with the simple profit formula above.

Example: A hot-dog stall earns $800 in revenue. The hot dogs and buns cost $200, and the stall fee is $100. Profit = 800 − (200+100) = $500.

4. Contribution per Unit |

Contribution is the amount left from the selling price after variable costs have been covered. It goes towards paying fixed costs and generating profit.

Contribution per unit = Selling price − Variable cost per unit

Once you know the contribution per unit, you can work out how many units need to be sold to cover all fixed costs. A higher contribution means each sale is more effective at boosting profit.

Example: A phone case sells for $12, and the variable cost (material, packaging) is $5. Contribution per unit = 12 − 5 = $7.

5. Break-even Point |

The break-even point is the level of output where total revenue equals total costs — the business makes neither a profit nor a loss. It is a vital planning tool.

Break-even output = Fixed costs ÷ Contribution per unit

You can also find the break-even point in sales value by multiplying the break-even output by the selling price. The margin of safety shows how far actual sales can fall before the business reaches break-even.

Margin of safety = Actual output − Break-even output

Example: Fixed costs are $2,000, the selling price is $50, and variable cost per unit is $30. Contribution = 50 − 30 = $20. Break-even = 2,000 ÷ 20 = 100 units. If the business sells 140 units, the margin of safety is 40 units.

6. Gross Profit Margin |

Gross profit margin measures how much of every dollar of revenue remains after covering the direct costs of making the product. It is expressed as a percentage.

Gross profit margin = (Gross profit ÷ Revenue) × 100%

Gross profit = Revenue − Cost of sales. Cost of sales includes items like raw materials and direct labour. A high gross profit margin means the business keeps more from each sale to pay overheads.

Example: A café has revenue of $50,000 and cost of sales (coffee beans, milk, pastries) of $30,000. Gross profit = 50,000 − 30,000 = $20,000. Gross profit margin = (20,000 ÷ 50,000) × 100 = 40%.

7. Net Profit Margin | 净利率

Net profit margin shows the percentage of revenue left after all business expenses have been deducted. It gives a truer picture of overall profitability.

Net profit margin = (Net profit ÷ Revenue) × 100%

Net profit = Gross profit − Other operating expenses (e.g. rent, salaries, advertising, interest, tax). A business can have a healthy gross margin but a low net margin if overheads are high.

Example: Continuing from the café, operating expenses (rent, wages, utilities) total $10,000. Net profit = 20,000 − 10,000 = $10,000. Net profit margin = (10,000 ÷ 50,000) × 100 = 20%.

8. Market Share and Market Growth |

Market share tells you how much of the total market a business controls. Market growth shows whether the whole market is expanding or shrinking.

Market share = (Company’s sales ÷ Total market sales) × 100%

Market growth = (Change in market size ÷ Original market size) × 100%

Change in market size = Market size this year − Market size last year. Both measures are crucial for strategy: a growing market may attract new competitors, while a shrinking market can pressure profits.

Example: A phone brand sells 2 million units in a market where total sales are 10 million units. Market share = (2m ÷ 10m) × 100 = 20%. If the total market was 9 million units last year, market growth = ((10m − 9m) ÷ 9m) × 100 ≈ 11.1%.

9. Cash Flow and Net Cash Flow |

Cash flow is the movement of money into and out of a business. It is not the same as profit — a profitable business can still run out of cash.

Net cash flow = Total cash inflows − Total cash outflows

Cash inflows include sales revenue, money from loans, and capital introduced. Cash outflows cover wages, raw materials, rent, loan repayments, and taxes.

Closing cash balance = Opening balance + Net cash flow

Example: A florist starts the month with $300 in the bank. Cash inflows from sales total $1,200. Outflows for flowers, rent and salaries are $1,000. Net cash flow = 1,200 − 1,000 = $200. Closing balance = 300 + 200 = $500.

10. Liquidity Ratios: Current and Acid Test |

Liquidity ratios measure a firm’s ability to pay its short-term debts. The two most common are the current ratio and the acid test (quick) ratio.

Current ratio = Current assets ÷ Current liabilities

Acid test ratio = (Current assets − Inventories) ÷ Current liabilities

Current assets include cash, receivables and inventory; current liabilities are debts due within one year. A current ratio of around 1.5:1 to 2:1 is usually considered safe. The acid test ratio is stricter because it removes inventory, which may take time to sell. A result close to 1:1 is often desirable.

Example: A business has current assets of $50,000 (including $15,000 inventory) and current liabilities of $30,000. Current ratio = 50,000 ÷ 30,000 = 1.67:1. Acid test = (50,000 − 15,000) ÷ 30,000 = 35,000 ÷ 30,000 ≈ 1.17:1. Both suggest the business can meet its short-term obligations.
