1. Scarcity and Opportunity Cost |

Scarcity is the fundamental economic problem: limited resources and unlimited wants force choices. The opportunity cost of any choice is the value of the next best alternative forgone. Many students mistakenly think opportunity cost is simply money spent. It includes time, enjoyment and any other benefit given up. For instance, if you use your afternoon to revise economics instead of playing football, the opportunity cost is the enjoyment and fitness benefit of that game. In exam answers, always identify the next best option, not a list of everything sacrificed.

A classic trap: a question says, “Sally could work and earn £20 or go to a concert costing £15. What is the opportunity cost of the concert?” The mistake is adding the cost and the lost wage (£35). The correct opportunity cost is the £20 she gives up by not working—the next best alternative. Always read carefully to see whether the activity uses the resource in question.

2. Factors of Production |

The four factors are land, labour, capital and enterprise. Land covers all natural resources. Labour is human effort. Capital means man-made goods used to produce other goods, like machinery, not money. Enterprise is the ability to organise the other three factors and bear risks. A top exam howler is treating money as capital. In economics, money is a medium of exchange, not a productive resource. Another frequent slip: confusing labour with entrepreneur. The entrepreneur hires labour; they are not the same factor.

Rewards: land earns rent, labour earns wages, capital earns interest, enterprise earns profit. In tables or classification tasks, a building is capital, a farmer is labour, iron ore is land. Students often label a factory owner as ‘labour’ – but she is enterprise if she takes risks and organises production. Remember, capital goods are used to make other goods, so a delivery van used by a bakery is capital, while a car used for family trips is a consumer good.

3. Demand and Supply Basics |

Demand is the quantity buyers are willing and able to purchase at various prices; supply is what producers are willing and able to sell. The law of demand says price and quantity demanded move in opposite directions, ceteris paribus. The law of supply says price and quantity supplied move in the same direction. The most persistent error in exams is mixing up a ‘change in demand’ (shift of the whole curve) with a ‘change in quantity demanded’ (movement along the curve). A shift is caused by factors like income, trends, price of related goods; a movement is caused only by a change in the product’s own price.

Complementary and substitute goods create further confusion. If the price of butter rises, demand for margarine (a substitute) increases, shifting its demand curve to the right. If the price of printers rises, demand for ink cartridges (a complement) decreases, shifting its demand curve to the left. Students often reverse these effects. Use real-world examples to test your logic before settling on an answer.

4. Market Equilibrium and Price Changes |

Equilibrium occurs where demand equals supply. Above equilibrium, there is excess supply (surplus); below it, excess demand (shortage). When analysing shifts, students often forget to consider the relative size of demand and supply changes. If demand increases and supply decreases, price unambiguously rises, but the quantity effect depends on which shift is bigger. A common mistake is to state a definite outcome for quantity without knowing the magnitudes. Always state ‘it depends on the extent of the shifts’ if information is missing.

Diagram errors cost many marks. Every diagram must have labelled axes (Price on the vertical, Quantity on the horizontal), labelled curves (D and S), equilibrium points (E, E1), and clear arrows showing shifts. When a price floor is imposed above equilibrium, students often draw it correctly but forget to mark Qd and Qs, which shows the surplus. For a price ceiling, they forget to show the shortage. Treat your diagram as an argument: every label tells part of the story.

5. Price Elasticity of Demand (PED) Introduction |

Price elasticity of demand measures how responsive quantity demanded is to a price change, calculated as:

PED = %ΔQd ÷ %ΔP

Year 9 students need to grasp inelastic (PED<1), elastic (PED>1) and unit elastic (PED=1). Since PED is typically negative, exam answers often use the absolute value. A widespread mistake is thinking a steep demand curve always means inelastic. Elasticity changes along a straight-line demand curve: at high prices it is elastic, at low prices it is inelastic. Do not judge elasticity by slope alone.

PED = 需求量变动百分比 ÷ 价格变动百分比

Link PED to total revenue: for elastic demand, a price cut raises total revenue because the quantity increase outweighs the price drop. For inelastic demand, a price cut reduces total revenue. Exam questions often ask whether a firm should raise or cut price based on PED. Remember to check total revenue logic, not just percentages.

6. Production and Costs |

In the short run, at least one factor is fixed. The law of diminishing returns says adding more of a variable factor to a fixed factor eventually reduces the extra (marginal) output gained. This pushes marginal cost up. Fixed costs (rent, salaries) do not vary with output, while variable costs (raw materials) do. Total cost = fixed cost + variable cost. Average total cost = total cost ÷ output.

A common calculation error is mixing average fixed cost and average variable cost. As output rises, average fixed cost continuously falls because the overhead is spread over more units. Students sometimes show average fixed cost rising, which is wrong. Also, when marginal cost is below average cost, average cost falls; when above, average cost rises. This U-shape confuses many, but it follows directly from the law of diminishing returns.

7. Types of Business Organisation |

Sole traders, partnerships, private limited companies (Ltd) and public limited companies (plc) are exam favourites. The key distinction is unlimited vs limited liability. Sole traders and general partners bear unlimited liability—their personal assets are at risk. Limited companies have a separate legal identity; shareholders’ personal assets are protected. A serious mistake is stating that all companies have unlimited liability, or that private limited companies can sell shares on the stock exchange. Only public limited companies can offer shares to the general public.

When a question asks “which type of business would you recommend?” students often just describe one type without comparing. To score full marks, consider the business size, need for capital, risk attitude and control. For example, a small family business wanting full control might choose a private limited company rather than a plc, even though a plc can access more capital. Always justify your choice with relevant features.

8. Money and Banking |

Money performs four functions: medium of exchange, unit of account, store of value and standard of deferred payment. The fourth function is the most overlooked. Central banks, like the Bank of England, issue currency, manage monetary policy and act as a lender of last resort. Commercial banks serve individuals and businesses. A classic misconception: thinking the central bank is like a high-street bank where you can open a savings account. In reality, commercial banks interact with the public; the central bank works with the government and other banks.

Year 9 exams also check understanding of current and savings accounts. A current account is for daily transactions, often with a debit card; interest is usually low or zero. A savings account pays interest but may restrict withdrawals. When comparing, link account features to a person’s needs—accessibility vs earning interest.
