1. What Is Accounting? |

Accounting is often called the ‘language of business’. It is the systematic process of identifying, recording, measuring, classifying, verifying, summarising, interpreting, and communicating financial information. The purpose is to help stakeholders such as owners, managers, investors, and the tax authorities make informed decisions. At its heart, accounting reveals the profit or loss of a business and its financial position at a point in time.

2. The Accounting Equation |

The entire accounting system rests on one fundamental equation: Assets = Liabilities + Equity. Assets are resources owned by a business, such as cash, inventory, and equipment. Liabilities are the business’s obligations to others, like bank loans and trade payables. Equity represents the owner’s stake in the business after all liabilities are settled. Every transaction you record must keep this equation in balance.

3. The Double-Entry System |

Double-entry bookkeeping is the standard method for recording business transactions. For every transaction, the total debits must equal the total credits. A debit entry increases assets and expenses, while it decreases liabilities, equity, and income. A credit entry does the reverse. This dual effect is what keeps the accounting equation intact and minimises errors. With practice, you will instinctively know how a transaction affects at least two accounts.

4. Source Documents and Books of Prime Entry |

Every accounting entry originates from a source document. Common examples include invoices, credit notes, receipts, and bank statements. These details are first recorded in books of prime entry, such as the sales day book, purchases day book, returns day books, cash book, and general journal. The purpose is to collate similar transactions before posting them into the ledgers. Accurate recording at this stage prevents mistakes from spreading.

5. Ledger Accounts and T-Accounts | 总分类账与T形账

The general ledger is a collection of all the accounts of a business. For learning purposes, we use T-accounts to visualise the debit and credit sides. Each T-account has a left side for debits and a right side for credits. At the end of a period, each account is balanced, and the closing balance is carried forward. You will spend a great deal of time drawing these accounts, so mastering their structure early is essential.

6. The Trial Balance |

A trial balance lists all the ledger account balances at a specific date, divided into debit and credit columns. Its primary purpose is to check the arithmetical accuracy of the double-entry records. If total debits equal total credits, the books are mathematically balanced. However, a balanced trial balance does not guarantee that no errors have occurred; errors of omission or commission may still exist, so it is a useful but not foolproof tool.

7. Introduction to the Income Statement |

The income statement, formerly called the trading and profit and loss account, measures a business’s financial performance over a period. It matches sales revenue against the cost of goods sold to calculate gross profit, then deducts operating expenses to arrive at net profit. The structure you learn in Year 9 includes sections for revenue, cost of sales, gross profit, other income, expenses, and profit for the year.

8. Introduction to the Statement of Financial Position |

The statement of financial position, also known as the balance sheet, shows the assets, liabilities, and equity of a business at a single point in time. Assets are split into non-current (long-term) and current (short-term) categories. Liabilities are similarly classified. The total equity section includes capital and retained profits. This statement is a direct application of the accounting equation and proves that the business’s resources equal its obligations plus owner’s interest.

9. Bank Reconciliation |

Bank reconciliation is a control process that compares the business’s cash book balance with the bank statement balance. Differences arise from timing delays, such as unpresented cheques and deposits in transit, or from errors. Preparing a bank reconciliation statement adjusts the cash book and explains the differences. It helps detect errors, unauthorised transactions, and helps maintain accurate cash records.

10. Control Accounts and Suspense Accounts |

In a larger business, control accounts such as the sales ledger control account and purchases ledger control account summarise large numbers of individual customer and supplier balances. They act as an independent check on the ledgers. A suspense account is temporarily used to park a difference in the trial balance while the error is investigated. Learning to prepare and correct these accounts builds your analytical skills for IGCSE.

11. Accounting Principles and Assumptions |

Understanding foundational concepts is crucial for explaining accounting treatments. Key principles include the business entity concept (business and owner are separate), going concern (business will continue operating), accruals (revenue and expenses are recorded when earned or incurred, not when cash changes hands), consistency, and prudence. These concepts underpin the preparation of financial statements and often appear in IGCSE theory questions.

12. Bridging to IGCSE and Exam Tips | 衔接 IGCSE 与备考建议

Year 9 is the foundation for the rigorous Cambridge IGCSE Accounting syllabus (0452). Focus on understanding the logic of double-entry rather than memorising entries. Practice past exam papers in incremental steps, learn the official terminology, and present your workings neatly. Balance numerical accuracy with clear written explanations. Your ability to interpret financial statements and suggest improvements will be just as important as your calculation skills.
