1. Selecting a Meaningful Media Text |

Every case study starts with a rich, contemporary text that contains clear codes and audience strategies. For this exercise we will use the theatrical release poster for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023). It offers vivid visual contrasts, layered representation and a clear brand identity, making it ideal for sharpening your analysis skills.

2. Media Language: Deconstructing Visual Codes |

Examine colour, framing and composition. The poster bursts with neon pinks, electric blues and deep purples, creating a sense of energy and multiple dimensions. Miles Morales is positioned centrally but slightly off-axis, leaping upward; Gwen Stacy mirrors him on the left. The crowded background of other Spider-people suggests chaos and community.

Colour symbolism is deliberate: pink and cyan are associated with the punk-rock, graffiti art style of the film. The central characters are highlighted by a white glow, pulling the eye first. Depth is created through layers of cityscapes and portal rings, making the poster feel immersive.

  • Dominant colours: neon pink, cyan, magenta, purple
  • Composition: rule of thirds, diagonal dynamic lines
  • Lighting: high-key on heroes, low-key deep background

3. Media Language: Technical Codes in a Poster |

Even a still image uses camera-like codes. The implied camera angle is low, looking up at Miles and Gwen, giving them power and heroism. Shallow depth of field is simulated: foreground characters are sharp while background figures blur, directing focus.

Typography is a crucial technical code. The film title uses a custom, distorted graffiti font with a glitch effect, suggesting digital multiverse glitches. The tagline “It’s how you wear the mask that matters” appears in a clean, bold sans-serif, balancing readability with style.

标语 “It’s how you wear the mask that matters” 则采用干净、粗体的无衬线字体,平衡了可读性与风格。

Technical Code Effect
Low angle shot Heroism, importance
Selective focus Guides viewer’s eye
Glitch typography Multiverse, digital theme

4. Representation: Constructing Characters |

Miles Morales is represented as a determined, relatable teenager. His body language shows motion and confidence. He wears a spray-painted version of the classic suit, blending tradition with street culture. Gwen Stacy appears poised and athletic, her hood framing her face with a quiet intensity.

Secondary characters in the background include Spider-Punk, Spider-Man India and Spider-Man 2099. Their diverse visual styles represent different cultures and personalities, but they are positioned behind the leads, reinforcing the central narrative of Miles and Gwen.

5. Representation: Stereotypes and Countertypes |

Superhero films have historically centred on white, male heroes. Here, the lead is Afro-Latino, and the secondary lead is female. Both are given agency and emotional depth, challenging traditional stereotypes. Miles is not a sidekick; he is the driving force of the story.

However, some stereotypes may still be present. The female characters are still expected to be athletic and conventionally attractive. The film partly subverts this by giving Gwen her own emotional arc and not merely positioning her as a love interest, but visual codes still conform to certain beauty standards.

6. Audience: Identifying the Target Audience |

The primary audience is teenagers and young adults aged 12 to 25, with a strong secondary family audience. The graffiti aesthetic and hip-hop soundtrack appeal to youth culture, while the multiverse plot attracts existing Marvel fans of all ages. Gender split is roughly balanced due to strong male and female leads.

Psychographically, the audience values creativity, independence and diversity. They are likely to be familiar with streaming platforms and consume content across multiple screens. The poster’s visual density rewards repeated viewing, appealing to fans who enjoy unpacking details.

7. Audience: Uses and Gratifications in Action |

Blumler and Katz’s Uses and Gratifications theory helps explain why audiences choose this text. Personal identity is satisfied as young viewers see themselves reflected in Miles’s struggles with school, family and identity. Social interaction is driven by the film’s meme-worthy visuals and online theory-crafting about multiverse cameos.

Entertainment is the most obvious gratification: the poster promises fast-paced action, stunning visuals and humour. Information or surveillance needs are less relevant here, though audience members may learn about different animation styles and cultural references.

8. Institution: Production, Distribution and Branding |

Produced by Columbia Pictures and Sony Pictures Animation in association with Marvel Entertainment, the film is part of a carefully managed franchise. The poster prominently displays the logos of all three companies at the bottom, functioning as a seal of quality and brand loyalty.

Theatrical poster distribution is digital-first these days, appearing on social media, cinema websites and fan forums. Vertical integration allows Sony to cross-promote across its gaming, music and film divisions. The trailer rollout was a major event, with teaser posters released sequentially to build hype.

9. Applying Media Theory: Barthes’ Semiotics |

Roland Barthes’ concepts of denotation and connotation are perfect tools for this poster. Denotatively, we see a teenager in a red and black suit jumping across buildings. Connotatively, the red mask and webs evoke power, responsibility and the iconic Spider-Man mythology, while the graffiti signifier connotes rebellion and youth creativity.

Another key sign is the multiple portals or circular frames. Denotation: glowing coloured rings. Connotation: the multiverse, infinite possibilities, fragmentation of identity. The symbolic code of the split-mask effects suggests Miles is caught between worlds, a central theme.

Signifier (image) → Signified (concept) = Sign

10. Practical Exercise: Annotating Your Own Poster |

Now it is your turn. Choose a film poster or advert of your own. Print it or paste it into a document, then around it write at least ten annotations using the media framework: media language, representation, audience, institution. Challenge yourself to use semiotic terminology and audience theory terms such as target demographic or uses and gratifications.

When annotating, always ask “What is the effect on the audience?” for every code you identify. For instance, a dark colour palette might make the film feel mysterious, positioning the audience as curious investigators. Link your points to the brand or genre expectations.

11. Structuring Your Exam-Style Response |

In the Cambridge Media exam, you will often be asked to analyse an unseen text. Use the PEEL structure: Point, Evidence, Explanation, Link. Start by stating your point about a media code, then describe the specific evidence from the poster, explain the connotation and effect, and finally link to representation or audience.

A sample paragraph: “The poster uses a low-angle composition to make the hero seem powerful and dominant. This is evident in the positioning of Miles above the cityscape, shot from below. The effect is that the audience looks up to him, reinforcing his role as an aspirational figure. This supports the representation of a relatable yet heroic teenager.”

12. Revision Summary and Command Words |

Remember the core media framework: Media Language (visual and technical codes), Representation (how groups, individuals and issues are portrayed), Audience (who is targeted and how they are engaged) and Institution (industry, branding, regulation). Keep these four areas ready as mental checklists.

Look out for command words in questions. “Analyse” means break down and explain in detail. “Evaluate” means judge significance or effectiveness. “Discuss” means explore different viewpoints. Practise writing quick plans for example questions like “Analyse how the poster creates meaning using visual codes.”
