1. The Shot Size Formula |
Shot size determines how much of a subject or scene is visible and shapes the audience’s emotional distance. The basic scale can be remembered as a visual ladder from extreme long shot to extreme close-up. Each step carries a distinct narrative purpose: establish context, show action, reveal emotion, or amplify detail.
- ELS (Extreme Long Shot) – Subject is tiny; setting dominates. Used for spectacle and isolation.
- LS (Long Shot) – Full figure visible; establishes body language and setting.
- MLS (Medium Long Shot) – Cut off at knees; balances figure and environment.
- MS (Medium Shot) – Waist up; natural for conversation, gesture.
- MCU (Medium Close-Up) – Chest up; begins to emphasise facial expression.
- CU (Close-Up) – Face fills frame; intense emotion, intimacy.
- ECU (Extreme Close-Up) – Eyes, lips, or an object detail; creates tension, symbolism.
Shot Size → Emotional Distance Formula: The closer the shot, the greater the psychological closeness and intensity.
2. Camera Angle & Power Theorem |
Camera angles are not neutral; they establish power relationships between the viewer and the subject. The angle from which we look influences whether we admire, fear, dominate, or feel equal to a character. Remember this visual grammar as a triangle of high, low, and eye-level positions.
- High Angle – Camera looks down. Subject appears small, vulnerable, or weak. The audience has power.
- Low Angle – Camera looks up. Subject appears dominant, heroic, or threatening. The subject has power.
- Eye Level – Camera at subject’s eye line. Equality and neutrality; the audience feels part of the scene.
- Canted / Dutch Angle – Horizon is tilted. Creates disorientation, tension, or psychological unease.
Angle + Height = Power Index. High angle subtracts power; low angle adds it.
3. Camera Movement Modifier |
Movement adds kinetic energy and directs the viewer’s eye, functioning as a modifier on the base shot. Different moves carry specific narrative functions: to reveal, to follow, to distance, or to explore. Combine these with your shot size and angle to decode dynamic meaning.
- Pan – Horizontal rotation from a fixed point. Scans a wide scene, follows lateral action.
- Tilt – Vertical rotation. Reveals height, size, or power; a tilt-up can make a building or character seem imposing.
- Zoom – Lens changes focal length. Zoom in isolates detail or heightens emotion; zoom out reveals context or insignificance.
- Tracking / Dolly – Camera physically moves. Tracks forward to immerse, backward to withdraw, sideways to parallel action.
- Handheld – Unsteady, shaky. Suggests documentary realism, urgency, or chaos.
Movement Type × Speed × Duration = Kinetic Narrative Intensity.
4. Colour & Lighting Emotional Formula |
Colour and lighting are not decoration; they are symbolic shortcuts that communicate mood, genre, and character instantly. Learn to read the temperature (warm/cool) of a scene and the lighting ratio (high-key/low-key) to identify the intended emotional response.
- Warm colours (red, orange, yellow) – Energy, passion, danger, warmth, aggression.
- Cool colours (blue, green, purple) – Calm, sadness, isolation, technology, mystery.
- High-Key Lighting – Bright, even illumination; few shadows. Used for comedies, sitcoms, pop videos; suggests openness, safety.
- Low-Key Lighting – Strong contrast, deep shadows. Used for film noir, horror, thriller; suggests fear, secrecy, moral ambiguity.
- Backlighting – Light from behind the subject. Creates silhouettes, halo effects; can convey spirituality or mystery.
Colour Temperature + Lighting Ratio = Emotional Atmosphere Index.
5. Sound Layering Formula |
Sound in media is constructed in layers, each serving a function: to create realism, to drive narrative, or to manipulate emotion. Always break down a media text’s sound into two families – diegetic and non-diegetic – and then analyse each layer separately.
- Diegetic Sound – Exists within the story world: dialogue, footsteps, car horns, radio music the characters can hear.
- Non-Diegetic Sound – Added for the audience only: voice-over narration, soundtrack score, added sound effects the characters cannot hear.
- Dialogue – Reveals character, advances plot, establishes relationships.
- Sound Effects (SFX) – Create realism, heighten action, provide auditory cues for off-screen events.
- Music / Score – Sets tone, signals genre, manipulates emotional pace, and creates unity.
- Silence – Absence of sound can be just as powerful, creating tension, emptiness, or reflection.
Total Audio Impact = Diegetic Layers + Non-Diegetic Layers + Strategic Silence.
6. Todorov’s Narrative Equilibrium Theorem |
Tzvetan Todorov suggested that most stories begin with a state of balance, which is then disrupted, leading to a journey and eventual restoration – often changed. This five-stage theorem gives you a skeleton for any narrative from a fairy tale to a news report.
Narrative Arc = Equilibrium → Disruption → Recognition → Attempt to Repair → New Equilibrium
- Stage 1: Equilibrium – The world is stable, characters are in their normal state. Everything is as it should be.
- Stage 2: Disruption – An event or antagonist disturbs the equilibrium. Peace is shattered.
- Stage 3: Recognition – Characters realise the disruption has occurred. The quest or problem is acknowledged.
- Stage 4: Attempt to Repair – The hero takes action to solve the problem. This is the longest section with challenges and battles.
- Stage 5: New Equilibrium – Harmony is restored, but the world is changed. Characters have grown.
This applies not only to films but also to the three-act structure of a video game, an advertisement’s problem-solution format, or the setup of a magazine article.
7. Propp’s Character Function Formula |
Vladimir Propp analysed Russian folk tales and identified seven recurring character types defined by their narrative function, not their personality. Treat this as a casting formula: every good media text populates its story world with these archetypes, sometimes combining them in one character.
- The Hero – Leads the quest, restores equilibrium. Often ordinary at first, then proves exceptional.
- The Villain – Opposes the hero, creates disruption. Embodies evil or greed.
- The Dispatcher – Sends the hero on the mission. May be a mentor, boss, or a letter.
- The Donor / Helper – Provides a magical object or vital advice. Tests the hero first.
- The Princess (or Prize) – What the hero seeks; often a person, treasure, or status. May need rescuing or may be an equal reward.
- The Princess’s Father – Rewards the hero, often by giving the princess in marriage or granting recognition.
- The False Hero – Claims credit falsely; eventually exposed. Creates a red-herring subplot.
Story Power = Sum of Character Functions × Conflict Intensity.
8. Uses and Gratifications Audience Formula |
Blumler and Katz proposed that audiences are active, not passive. They choose media to satisfy specific needs. This formula helps you predict why a target audience would engage with a particular media product, from a true-crime podcast to a social media challenge.
Media Choice = (Information Need + Personal Identity Need + Integration & Social Interaction Need + Entertainment Need) – Barriers to Access
- Information & Surveillance – Seeking news, learning, satisfying curiosity about the world.
- Personal Identity – Reinforcing personal values, finding models of behaviour, identifying with others.
- Integration & Social Interaction – Gaining a sense of belonging, conversing with others about media, substituting real-life companionship.
- Entertainment & Escapism – Relaxation, emotional release, filling time, pleasure.
When analysing a text, ask: Which of these needs does it serve, and for whom? A fitness app, for example, serves information (tracking), identity (being a healthy person), and integration (sharing results).
9. Representation Equation: Stereotype vs. Countertype |
Representation is the way media re-presents people, places, and ideas. It is never a neutral reflection of reality but a construction that can reinforce or challenge social categories. Use this equation to measure whether a representation leans towards a stereotype or a countertype.
Representation = Selection + Omission + Mediation → Effects on Audience Perception
- Stereotype – A simplified, exaggerated, often negative generalisation about a group. Reduces a diverse group to a few traits. Repeated exposure normalises these traits.
- Countertype – A positive or unexpected representation that challenges the dominant stereotype. Can be equally simplified but deliberately subverts expectation to create new norms.
- Archetype – The original pattern or model from which copies are made; more universal and neutral. For example, ‘the mentor’ is an archetype, not a stereotype.
- Tokenism – Including one underrepresented person to give the appearance of diversity without true equality.
Always ask: Who made this? For what purpose? Who benefits from this representation?
10. Semiotics Core Formula: Sign = Signifier + Signified |
Ferdinand de Saussure’s model teaches that every sign in media is made of two inseparable parts: the physical form (signifier) and the mental concept (signified). Together they create meaning that depends on cultural codes. This formula underpins how logos, colours, and even sounds carry connotative meaning.
Sign = Signifier (word, image, sound) + Signified (concept it represents)
- Denotation – The literal, dictionary meaning. A red rose denotes a kind of flower.
- Connotation – The cultural, emotional associations. The same rose connotes romance, passion, or socialism, depending on context.
- Myth (Barthes) – When a connotation becomes so dominant it is seen as natural or universal truth. E.g., thinness = health.
Apply this to any text: take a brand logo (signifier) and deconstruct what values (signified + myth) it sells.
11. Media Industry Funding & Regulation Formula |
Understanding how a media product is funded and regulated reveals its purpose and constraints. Whether public service or commercial, the economic model shapes content. This formula helps you compare institutions like the BBC, Netflix, or a local newspaper.
Content Bias ≈ Funding Source + Regulatory Obligations – Independence Buffer
- Public Service Broadcaster (e.g., BBC) – Funded by licence fee; must inform, educate, entertain; regulated by Ofcom for impartiality, accuracy.
- Commercial Broadcaster (e.g., ITV, Channel 4) – Funded by advertising or sponsorship; content attracts audiences for advertisers; lighter touch regulation.
- Subscription Video on Demand (e.g., Netflix, Disney+) – Funded by subscriptions; global platform with algorithm-driven recommendations; less direct regulation, driven by viewer retention.
- Print & Online Media – Funded by sales, ads, subscriptions; regulated by IPSO (press) or self-regulation; editorial line often reflects owner’s interests.
Always trace the money flow to understand why certain stories are covered and others are ignored.
12. Media Ethics & Legal Bounds Quick Theorem |
Media creators must operate within legal and ethical boundaries. These rules protect individuals and society but can also be creatively negotiated. Remember them as a set of non-negotiable constraints that shape acceptable content.
- Defamation (Libel/Slander) – Publishing false statements that damage reputation. Defence: truth, honest opinion, or public interest.
- Privacy – Respecting individuals’ private lives unless overridden by public interest. Intrusion must be justified.
- Copyright & Intellectual Property – Protects creators’ original work. Fair dealing allows limited use for criticism, review, or education.
- Obscenity & Harm – Material must not deprave or corrupt audiences. Additional protections for children via watershed and age ratings.
- Representation & Diversity Codes – OFCOM and IPSO require fair portrayal, avoiding harmful stereotypes and ensuring a range of voices.
Acceptable Content = Story Idea – Legal Risk + Ethical Justification.
