Hypothesis: A testable idea or prediction based on scientific knowledge.

Independent variable: The factor you change deliberately in an experiment.

Cell membrane: A thin, flexible barrier around the cell that controls what enters and leaves.

Nucleus: The organelle containing genetic material (DNA) that controls cellular activities.

Diffusion: The net movement of particles from a region of higher concentration to a region of lower concentration.

Gamete: A sex cell (sperm in males, egg in females) containing half the normal number of chromosomes.

Fertilisation: The fusion of a male and a female gamete to form a zygote.

Dominant allele: A version of a gene that is always expressed if present, even with one copy.

Habitat: The natural home or environment of an organism.

Community: All the populations of different species that live together in a habitat.

Producer: An organism that makes its own food using energy from the Sun, e.g. a green plant.

Consumer: An organism that obtains energy by eating other organisms.

Decomposer: An organism, such as a bacterium or fungus, that breaks down dead material and recycles nutrients.

Food web: A network of interconnected food chains showing feeding relationships in an ecosystem.

Atom: The smallest particle of an element that can take part in a chemical reaction.

Element: A pure substance made of only one type of atom, listed on the Periodic Table.

Compound: A substance formed when two or more different elements chemically combine in fixed proportions.

Molecule: Two or more atoms chemically bonded together; can be same or different elements.

Periodic Table: A chart organising all known elements in order of increasing atomic number, grouped by similar properties.

元素周期表:按原子序数递增排列、将性质相似的元素放入同一族的图表。“周期”暗示性质周期性重现。

Group: A vertical column in the Periodic Table; elements in the same group have similar chemical properties.

Atomic number: The number of protons in the nucleus of an atom, which defines the element.

6. Chemical Reactions | 化学反应

Reactant: A substance that takes part in and undergoes change during a reaction.

Product: A substance formed as a result of a chemical reaction.

生成物:化学反应中产生的新物质。它们是反应结束后冲过终点线的结果。

Exothermic reaction: A reaction that releases energy to the surroundings, usually as heat.

放热反应:向周围释放能量的反应,常常表现为升温。“exo-”向外,热量“出门”了。

Endothermic reaction: A reaction that absorbs energy from the surroundings, causing a temperature drop.

Catalyst: A substance that speeds up a chemical reaction without being used up itself.

Word equation: A way of summarising a reaction using the names of reactants and products, e.g.

magnesium + oxygen → magnesium oxide

Conservation of mass: In a chemical reaction, the total mass of reactants equals the total mass of products.

7. Acids and Alkalis | 酸与碱

Acid: A substance with a pH less than 7 that releases hydrogen ions (H⁺) in solution.

Alkali: A soluble base with a pH greater than 7 that releases hydroxide ions (OH⁻) in water.

pH scale: A numerical scale from 0 to 14 measuring how acidic or alkaline a solution is; 7 is neutral.

Indicator: A dye that changes colour depending on the pH of the solution, e.g. litmus or universal indicator.

Neutralisation: The reaction between an acid and an alkali that produces salt and water:

acid + alkali → salt + water

Salt: An ionic compound formed when the hydrogen of an acid is replaced by a metal or ammonium ion.

Force: A push or pull acting on an object, measured in newtons (N).

:作用在物体上的推或拉,单位是牛顿。它是一种能让物体运动状态改变的相互作用。

Newton: The SI unit of force; 1 N is the force needed to accelerate 1 kg by 1 m/s².

牛顿:力的国际单位,1 牛顿是使 1 千克物体获得 1 米每秒平方加速度的力。

Gravity: A non-contact force of attraction between masses; on Earth it gives objects weight.

重力:质量之间相互吸引的非接触力;在地球上它赋予物体重量。它是让我们双脚着地的力量。

Friction: A contact force that opposes motion between two surfaces in contact.

摩擦力:两个接触表面相对运动时产生的阻碍力。它使滑动的物体减速或防止滑动。

Balanced forces: When forces acting on an object are equal in size and opposite in direction, resulting in no change in motion.

平衡力:作用在物体上的力大小相等、方向相反,物体的运动状态保持不变。静者恒静,动着匀速。

Unbalanced forces: When the resultant force is not zero, causing the object to accelerate or decelerate.

非平衡力:合力不为零,导致物体加速或减速。力度不均,运动改变。

Speed: The rate at which an object covers distance; calculated by

speed = distance ÷ time

速率:物体移动距离的快慢程度,公式:速率 = 距离 ÷ 时间。单位可以是 m/s 或 km/h。


9. Energy and Electricity | 能量与电学

Energy: The capacity to do work; measured in joules (J). It can be stored or transferred but never created or destroyed.

能量:做功的本领,单位是焦耳。它可储存和转移,但不会凭空创生或消灭。

Kinetic energy: The energy an object possesses due to its motion.

动能:物体因运动而具有的能量。速度越快、质量越大,动能越大。

Gravitational potential energy: Energy stored in an object because of its position in a gravitational field, e.g. a raised weight.

重力势能:物体因在重力场中的高度而储存的能量。举得越高,拥有的势能越多。

Current (I): The flow of electric charge around a circuit, measured in amperes (A).

电流:电荷在电路中的流动,单位是安培。想象成管道中水的流量。

Voltage (V): The ‘push’ that drives current around a circuit
