Mastering art vocabulary is essential for Year 9 students following the CIE Art curriculum. This guide provides a structured way to memorise key terms related to the elements of art, principles of design, techniques, and analysis. Use this to improve your annotation skills and confidently discuss artworks.

1. Why Art Vocabulary Matters |

In CIE Art, you are expected to describe, analyse and evaluate artworks using specific terminology. Knowing the right words helps you express observations clearly and earn higher marks in written tasks.

Start by familiarising yourself with the Elements of Art and Principles of Design – the core building blocks of all visual compositions.

2. Line | 线条

A line is a mark made by a moving point. It can vary in width, direction, and length. Lines can be straight, curved, zigzag, or wavy, and they play a fundamental role in defining shapes and guiding the viewer’s eye.

Lines are categorised by their direction: horizontal lines suggest calm and rest; vertical lines communicate strength and stability; diagonal lines create a sense of action or tension.

Think of line as the path of a dot walking across the page – this mental image makes it easy to remember. An outline is the outer edge of a shape, while a contour line describes the surface of a three-dimensional form.

3. Shape and Form |

Shape is a flat, two-dimensional area enclosed by lines or defined by colour or value. Forms are three-dimensional, having height, width, and depth. Think of a circle as shape and a sphere as form.

Geometric shapes (circles, squares, triangles) are precise and mathematical; organic shapes are irregular and often found in nature, like the contours of leaves or puddles.

To remember ‘form’, think of sculpture – artists use shading and perspective to give the illusion of form on a flat surface.

4. Space | 空间

Space refers to the area within, around, above, or below objects. Positive space is occupied by the subject; negative space is the empty area around it. Negative space is just as important as positive space in creating a balanced composition.

Understanding negative space helps artists see shapes more accurately. Look at the space between branches of a tree – those gaps shape your positive form.

Space can also create depth: objects placed higher in the picture plane often appear further away, while overlapping suggests one form in front of another.

5. Texture | 质感

Texture is the surface quality of an object – how it feels or looks like it feels. Actual texture can be felt by touch; implied (visual) texture is created by using marks, lines, and shading to simulate roughness, smoothness, or softness.

Use adjectives like rough, smooth, bumpy, fluffy, gritty, and silky when describing texture. Invented textures are decorative patterns that do not represent real surfaces.

Frottage is a technique where you place paper over a textured surface and rub with a crayon or pencil to capture the texture.

6. Value (Tone) |

Value describes the lightness or darkness of a colour or of a neutral grey. A value scale goes from white (high key) to black (low key). Tones are created by adding black (shade) or white (tint) to a hue.

High contrast in value creates drama and draws attention; low contrast gives a soft, subtle, and cohesive effect. Charoscuro is the strong contrast between light and dark, often used to model volume.

When shading, always consider the light source – the side facing the light is the highlight, the opposite side is in shadow, and the cast shadow falls on surrounding surfaces.

7. Colour Theory |

The colour wheel organises hues. Primary colours (red, yellow, blue) cannot be mixed from other colours. Secondary colours (orange, green, violet) are made by mixing two primaries. Tertiary colours result from mixing a primary and a neighbouring secondary, e.g., red-orange.

Complementary colours sit opposite each other (red and green) and create vibrant contrast. Analogous colours sit side by side (blue, blue-green, green) and produce harmony.

A tint is a colour plus white (pastel), a shade is a colour plus black (darker version), and a tone is a colour plus grey (muted). Warm colours (reds, oranges, yellows) evoke heat and advance; cool colours (blues, greens, purples) suggest calm and recede.

8. Principles of Design: Balance and Contrast |

Balance refers to the distribution of visual weight. Symmetrical balance is like a mirror image, creating formality; asymmetrical balance uses different elements that still achieve equilibrium, often feeling more dynamic. Radial balance radiates from a central point, as seen in mandalas.

Contrast is the arrangement of opposite elements (light vs. dark, rough vs. smooth, large vs. small, geometric vs. organic) to create visual interest and emphasise focal points.

Without contrast, an artwork can feel flat and monotonous. Use contrast thoughtfully to guide the viewer’s eye.

9. Principles: Emphasis, Movement, Pattern, Rhythm, Unity |

Emphasis draws the viewer’s eye to a focal point, achieved through contrast, placement, or isolation. The focal point is where you want the viewer to look first.

Movement guides the eye through the artwork using lines, edges, and repeated elements. Artists often use leading lines or the arrangement of figures to create a visual journey.

Pattern is the repeating of an object or symbol; rhythm is created when elements are repeated with variation, like beats in music. Unity gives a sense of wholeness, where all parts work together harmoniously.

10. Drawing and Shading Techniques |

Mastering drawing techniques enriches your mark-making. Hatching uses parallel lines to build tone; cross-hatching adds another set of lines crossing them. Stippling employs dots of varying density to create depth.

Blending smooths transitions using a tool, tissue, or finger. Scumbling uses scribbled, circular marks to build texture. Contour drawing focuses on the outline and surface edges without lifting the pen.

These techniques are often combined to achieve a realistic range of values. Practice them in a sketchbook to develop control.

Quick Definition
Hatching 排线法 Parallel lines to create shade
Intersecting sets of parallel lines
Stippling 点画法 Dots to form tone and texture
Blending 揉擦法 Smoothing transitions with a tool
Scumbling 涂鸦法 Scribbled circular marks

11. Painting and Mixed Media Terms |

Watercolour is a transparent medium activated with water, known for its fluid, luminous washes. Gouache is similar but opaque. Acrylic paint is fast-drying, water-soluble,
