1. Lasswell Communication Model |

Harold Lasswell’s linear model breaks any act of communication into five essential questions. Memorise it as a one-line formula: Who → Says What → Channel → To Whom → Effect, or S‑M‑C‑R‑E (Source‑Message‑Channel‑Receiver‑Effect). This simple chain helps you identify the sender, the content, the medium, the target audience, and the intended outcome of a media message.

Lasswell Formula: Source → Message → Channel → Receiver → Effect

  • In an exam, ask: Who created this text? What does it say? How is it delivered? Who is it for? What reaction does it want?

  • The model assumes a passive audience and a one-way flow of information; later theories challenge this simplicity.

2. Shannon-Weaver Model |

The Shannon-Weaver model adds a crucial real-world element: noise. Think of it as an engineering flowchart: Information Source → Transmitter → Channel → Receiver → Destination, with Noise interfering at any point. This formula reminds you that communication can break down – static, distractions, cultural misunderstandings, or poor encoding can all distort the message.

Shannon-Weaver: Info Source → Transmitter → Channel ( + Noise ) → Receiver → Destination

  • Noise can be physical (bad signal), psychological (wandering attention), or semantic (words meaning different things to different people).

  • For media analysis, ask: What could interfere between the producer’s intention and the audience’s understanding?

3. Todorov’s Narrative Theory |

Tzvetan Todorov proposed that most stories follow a five-stage structure, which can be expressed as a narrative formula: Equilibrium → Disruption → Recognition → Attempt to Repair → New Equilibrium. This pattern appears everywhere – from fairy tales and blockbuster films to news reports and advertising narratives.

Todorov’s Narrative Formula: Eq → Dis → Rec → Rep → New Eq

  • You can map any storyline onto these five steps: the calm start, the problem, the hero realising the problem, the fight or journey, and the resolved (but changed) world.

  • Even 30-second adverts often compress this structure: happy before (equilibrium), product need (disruption), product use (repair), happy after (new equilibrium).

4. Propp’s Character Functions |

Vladimir Propp analysed hundreds of Russian folk tales and reduced characters to eight recurring types. Think of his theory as a cast-list formula: Hero + Villain + Princess + Dispatcher + Donor + Helper + False Hero + (Princess’s Father). While rooted in fairy tales, these archetypes appear in everything from action movies to game shows.

Propp’s Character Set: H + V + P + D + Dn + Hp + FH + PF

  • The Hero is the protagonist who seeks something; the Villain opposes; the Princess is the reward; the Dispatcher sends the Hero off; the Donor gives a magical item; the Helper aids; the False Hero pretends to be good.

  • When analysing a media text, ask which Proppian roles you can spot – and consider if any characters subvert or combine these functions.

5. Barthes’ Semiotics |

Roland Barthes gave us a powerful toolkit for reading signs. His core formula unpacks meaning-making: Sign = Signifier (form) + Signified (concept). To this he added levels of meaning: Denotation (literal, descriptive) and Connotation (cultural, associative). Media analysts use this formula to explore how images, words, and sounds produce ideologies and myths.

Barthes’ Semiotic Formula: Signifier (Form) + Signified (Meaning) → Denotation → Connotation → Myth

  • A rose (signifier) stands for the concept of love (signified) – that is a sign. At the denotative level it is simply a flower; connotatively, it suggests romance, passion, or value.

  • Myths are the deep cultural stories that make connotations seem natural – like luxury cars connoting success and freedom.

6. Stuart Hall’s Encoding/Decoding |

Stuart Hall argued that audiences are not passive receivers but active decoders. His model can be written as: Producer (Encodes meaning) → Text (Messages & Codes) → Audience (Decodes meaning). The crucial insight is that decoding does not always match encoding; there are three reading positions: Dominant (Preferred), Negotiated, and Oppositional.

Encoding → Text → Decoding [ D / N / O ]

  • A Dominant reading accepts the producer’s intended message fully. A Negotiated reading partly accepts but adapts it to personal experience. An Oppositional reading rejects the intended message and substitutes an alternative interpretation.

  • When analysing, consider what the text ‘expects’ you to think, and how different audiences might actually interpret it based on their background.

7. Uses and Gratifications Theory |

This theory shifts the question from “What does media do to people?” to “What do people do with media?” The audience actively selects media to meet four basic needs, summarised by the formula Media = PIES: Personal Identity, Information (Surveillance), Entertainment, Social Interaction. Every media text can be analysed by asking which of these four gratifications it offers.

U&G Formula: Gratifications = Personal Identity + Information + Entertainment + Social Interaction

  • Personal Identity: we use media to reinforce our values and sense of self (e.g. following a role model). Information/Surveillance: we seek news, documentaries, or ‘how-to’ content to understand the world. Entertainment: we relax, escape, or enjoy emotional release. Social Interaction: media gives us shared talking points and a sense of belonging.

  • Many texts combine multiple gratifications; a television drama may offer personal identity through relatable characters, social interaction through online fan communities, and entertainment through engaging plots.

8. Agenda-Setting Theory |

Agenda-setting argues that while the media may not tell us what to think, it is very successful at telling us what to think about. The formula is: Media Agenda → Public Agenda. The issues given the most coverage by news outlets become the issues the public considers most important, a process represented by the salience transfer model.

Agenda-Setting: Media Salience → Audience Salience → Policy Debate

  • The theory is often tested by comparing the frequency of news topics with public opinion surveys. If climate change barely appears in the news, audiences tend to rank it as a low priority, regardless of the objective situation.

  • Framing and priming are related concepts: once an issue is on the agenda, the media shape how we think about it through the angle of the story.

9. Cultivation Theory |

George Gerbner’s cultivation theory proposes that heavy television exposure gradually shapes viewers’ perceptions of reality. The key formula links viewing volume to worldview: Heavy TV Consumption → ‘Mean World Syndrome’. Over time, heavy viewers are more likely to see the world as a dangerous, untrustworthy place, mirroring the violence and drama they see on screen.

Cultivation: Volume of Exposure × Time → Distorted Reality Perception

  • Mainstreaming occurs when heavy viewers from different backgrounds begin to share a common, television-shaped outlook; resonance happens when a viewer’s real-life environment matches the televised world, reinforcing the cultivation effect.

  • For media analysis, ask: what repeated messages might ‘cultivate’ a recurring attitude in the audience? This is especially powerful in long-running genres like soap operas or reality TV.

10. Mise-en-Scène Formula (CLAMPS) |

Mise-en-scène refers to everything placed in front of the camera or arranged within the frame. A handy mnemonic formula for remembering its components is CLAMPS: Costume, Lighting, Acting (Figure expression & movement), Make-up, Props, Setting. Analysing these elements together reveals how mood, character, and meaning are constructed visually.

Mise-en-Scène = C + L + A + M + P + S (CLAMPS)

  • Costume can signify time period, social status, or personality. Lighting (high key, low key, underlighting) creates atmosphere and directs attention. Acting covers facial expressions, gestures, and body language. Make-up and hairstyling enhance or transform appearance. Props convey symbolic meaning and narrative clues. Setting establishes the world of the story.

  • When you describe mise-en-scène in an essay, try to connect each CLAMPS element to the text’s overall meaning or ideology – not just list them.

11. Cinematography Essentials |

Cinematography is the art of capturing the scene. Break it down with the formula Shot Size + Angle + Movement + Focus. Common shot sizes include Extreme Long Shot (ELS), Long Shot (LS), Medium Shot (MS), Close-Up (CU), and Extreme Close-Up (ECU). Camera angles range from high angle (looking down, diminishing the subject) to low angle (looking up, empowering the subject). Movement and focus further modulate meaning.

Cinematography = Size (ELS → ECU) + Angle (High / Eye / Low) + Movement (Pan, Tilt, Track, etc.) + Focus (Deep / Shallow)

  • Shot size controls how much of the subject and setting we see, and therefore how intimate or distant our relationship feels. A close-up on a face forces empathy; an extreme long shot can make a character seem insignificant.

  • Camera movement (tracking, dolly, handheld) can suggest dynamism, instability, or follow the character’s journey. Shallow focus (blurred background) isolates the subject and draws our eye.

12. Editing Techniques |

Editing shapes time, pace, and narrative logic. A simple formula for recognising editing effects is: Cut → Transitions → Continuity / Montage → Rhythm. The most basic edit is the cut; transitions include dissolves, fades, and wipes. Continuity editing aims for seamless storytelling (the 180° rule, shot-reverse-shot, match on action), while montage editing deliberately juxtaposes images to create intellectual or emotional impact (Soviet montage theory).

Editing = Cuts + Transitions + Continuity System / Montage → Pace & Emotion

  • Continuity editing is designed to be invisible; it gives the illusion of real-time unfolding. Shot-reverse-shot during dialogue, for example, makes the conversation feel natural. Breaking continuity deliberately (jump cuts) can create discomfort or highlight the artificiality of the medium.

  • The Kuleshov effect is a classic editing theorem: the same shot of an actor’s face, intercut with different images (food, a coffin, a child), leads the audience to read different emotions. This proves that meaning arises from the juxtaposition of shots.
