1. The Elements of Music |

Music is built from seven fundamental elements: pitch, duration (rhythm), dynamics, tempo, timbre, texture, and structure. Understanding each helps you describe and create music effectively.

An easy way to remember them is the acronym ‘DR PITTS’: Dynamics, Rhythm, Pitch, (and) Instrumentation/Timbre, Tempo, Texture, Structure. Some courses add silence and articulation.

When analysing a piece, always refer to these elements and how they change. For example, a sudden increase in dynamics (crescendo) can build tension.

2. Rhythm, Metre and Tempo |

Rhythm is the pattern of sound and silence over time. Metre is the grouping of beats into regular bars, often shown by a time signature like 4/4 or 3/4.

In simple time (e.g. 2/4, 3/4, 4/4), each beat can be divided into two equal parts. Compound time (e.g. 6/8, 9/8, 12/8) has beats that divide into three equal parts, giving a lilting feel.

Tempo indicates speed. Italian terms are standard: Largo (very slow), Adagio (slow), Andante (walking pace), Moderato (moderate), Allegro (fast), Presto (very fast). You may also see tempo changes like accelerando (getting faster) and ritardando (getting slower).

标准的意大利术语有:Largo(极慢)、Adagio(慢)、Andante(步速)、Moderato(中速)、Allegro(快)、Presto(非常快)。你还可能见到速度变化,如 accelerando(渐快)和 ritardando(渐慢)。

Syncopation occurs when accents fall on weak beats or off-beats, creating rhythmic interest. A dot after a note increases its length by half.

3. Pitch and Melody |

Pitch refers to how high or low a note sounds. Melody is a sequence of pitches arranged with rhythm to form a memorable tune. A melody can move by step (conjunct), leap (disjunct), or repeat notes.

An interval is the distance between two pitches. Common intervals include semitone, tone, third, fourth, fifth, octave. Melodies often use a scale, like the major or minor scale, as their foundation.

Key features to discuss: phrase structure (question and answer phrases), range (wide or narrow), contour (ascending, descending, arch-shaped), and ornamentation (trills, turns).

4. Harmony and Tonality |

Harmony is the combination of different pitches sounding simultaneously. Chords are built by stacking thirds; a triad is a three-note chord (root, third, fifth). The primary triads in a key are I, IV, and V (tonic, subdominant, dominant).

调内的主要三和弦是 I、IV 和 V(主和弦、下属和弦、属和弦)。

Tonality refers to the key of the music. The two main types are major (bright, happy) and minor (sad, serious). Modulation is a change of key within a piece. A piece can also be atonal (no key) or modal (using modes like Dorian).

Cadences are chord progressions that punctuate phrases: perfect (V–I, sounds finished), imperfect (I–V, unfinished), plagal (IV–I, ‘Amen’), and interrupted (V–vi, a surprise).

5. Timbre and Dynamics |

Timbre (pronounced ‘tam-ber’) is the unique quality of a sound that distinguishes one instrument or voice from another. It is determined by the harmonic content and attack of a note.

Dynamics describe the volume: pianissimo (pp, very soft), piano (p, soft), mezzo-piano (mp, moderately soft), mezzo-forte (mf, moderately loud), forte (f, loud), fortissimo (ff, very loud). Gradual changes include crescendo (growing louder) and diminuendo / decrescendo (growing softer).

力度描述音量的大小:pianissimo(pp,极弱)、piano(p,弱)、mezzo-piano(mp,中弱)、mezzo-forte(mf,中强)、forte(f,强)、fortissimo(ff,极强)。

Articulation affects timbre and attack. Common markings: staccato (short, detached), legato (smooth, connected), accent (>), marcato (marked), tenuto (held, full value).

6. Texture and Structure |

Texture describes how many layers of sound are heard at once, and how they relate. Main types: monophonic (a single melody line, no accompaniment), homophonic (melody with chordal accompaniment, most common), polyphonic (two or more independent melodies interweaving), heterophonic (simultaneous variations of one melody).

Structure is the overall plan of a piece. Familiar forms include binary (AB), ternary (ABA), rondo (ABACA), theme and variations, and verse-chorus form. In pop music, intro, verse, chorus, bridge, middle 8, outro are common sections.

Repetition and contrast are key structural devices. Identifying sections and labelling them with letters (A, B, C) helps in analysis.

7. Notation Fundamentals |

Staff notation uses five lines and four spaces. Notes are placed on lines or spaces to show pitch. Clefs assign notes to lines: treble clef (G clef) for higher-pitched instruments, bass clef (F clef) for lower parts. Ledger lines extend the staff.

Note durations: semibreve (whole note, 4 beats), minim (half, 2 beats), crotchet (quarter, 1 beat), quaver (eighth, ½ beat), semiquaver (sixteenth, ¼ beat). Rests correspond: semibreve rest, minim rest, etc. A dot adds half the value; a tie joins two notes of the same pitch.

Key signatures indicate sharps or flats consistently. Time signatures appear at the start: top number = beats per bar, bottom number = type of beat (4 for crotchet, 8 for quaver). Accidentals (sharp ♯, flat ♭, natural ♮) alter pitch within a bar.

8. Instrument Families |

Instruments are grouped by sound production: strings (violin, viola, cello, double bass, harp, guitar), woodwind (flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, saxophone), brass (trumpet, French horn, trombone, tuba), percussion (tuned: xylophone, timpani; untuned: snare drum, cymbals). Keyboard (piano, organ) and electronic instruments are additional families.
