1. Introduction to the Case Study Assignment |

In SQA Music, a case study asks you to demonstrate your understanding of a piece of music by describing its elements using accurate terminology. You are expected to comment on melody, harmony, rhythm, texture, structure, instrumentation, dynamics, and style. The ability to link these concepts to the actual sound is far more important than simply memorising definitions.

2. The Chosen Work: Pachelbel’s Canon in D | 选定作品:帕赫贝尔的《D大调卡农》

Johann Pachelbel’s Canon and Gigue in D, commonly called ‘Canon in D’, was written around 1680. It is scored for three violins and basso continuo. The piece is an ideal case study because it contains a clear ground bass, a strict three-voice canon, and a gradual build-up of texture, all of which allow us to examine a wide range of music concepts.

3. Background and Context |

Pachelbel was a German Baroque composer and organist. Canon in D was originally written as chamber music for a small ensemble. The title ‘Canon’ refers to the compositional technique where a melody is imitated by successive voices, entering one after another at the same pitch or at a different pitch. The work was largely forgotten until the late 20th century but is now one of the most recognised pieces of classical music.

4. Melody and Main Theme |

The main melody of the canon is an elegant eight-bar phrase played by the first violin. It is built mainly from stepwise motion with occasional leaps, and it uses notes exclusively from the D major scale. The theme is memorable because of its balanced phrasing: a two-bar question is answered by a two-bar response, and then the whole four-bar unit is sequenced up a step to create an answering phrase. This structure creates a sense of symmetry and forward motion.

The melody uses a range of just over an octave, and its highest notes appear near the middle of the phrase, giving it a gentle arch shape. Ornamentation was often added by performers in the Baroque era, so you may hear trills (a rapid alternation between the written note and the note above) in modern recordings.

5. Harmony and Ground Bass |

Harmony in Canon in D is underpinned by a repeating two-bar bass line played by the cello (or bass viol) and harpsichord. This ground bass follows the chord progression: I – V – vi – iii – IV – I – IV – V. In the key of D major, the chords are D major, A major, B minor, F♯ minor, G major, D major, G major, and A major. The progression repeats continuously throughout the entire piece.

I – V – vi – iii – IV – I – IV – V。在 D 大调中,这些和弦分别是 D 大调、A 大调、B 小调、F♯ 小调、G 大调、D 大调、G 大调和 A 大调。

The use of a ground bass is a typical feature of Baroque music. Although the harmonies remain virtually unchanged, the music does not feel static because the upper voices introduce increasing rhythmic activity and melodic variation. This combination of a fixed harmonic skeleton with freely evolving melodic lines is one of the work’s greatest strengths.

6. Rhythm, Metre and Tempo |

The piece is in simple quadruple time (4/4), with the ground bass moving mainly in even crotchets (quarter notes). The upper violin parts begin with fairly slow rhythmic values, often semibreves and minims, and gradually introduce quavers (eighth notes) and semiquavers (sixteenth notes) as the piece progresses. This rhythmic acceleration creates an impression of increasing energy and excitement.

The tempo is typically marked as Andante or Moderato, and a common metronome marking is ♩ = 72–80. There is no notated change in tempo; the perceived increase in speed comes entirely from the shorter note values in the melody. Syncopation is rare, though some performances may apply slight rubato for expressive purposes.

7. Dynamics and Expression |

Pachelbel did not include any dynamic markings in the original score. In Baroque performance practice, dynamics were often left to the performers’ discretion, and terraced dynamics – sudden shifts between loud and soft rather than gradual crescendos – were common. Modern recordings of Canon in D often apply a long, gradual crescendo throughout the piece, but this is a romanticised interpretation rather than an authentic Baroque approach.

In your SQA analysis, you can note that the piece begins quietly with only the bass and first violin and grows louder as more instruments enter and the texture thickens. Even without written dynamics, the combination of instrumentation and rhythmic density naturally creates a sense of crescendo.

8. Texture and Counterpoint |

Texture is one of the most important concepts in this case study. The piece opens with a monophonic statement of the bass line alone. The first violin then enters with the main theme, creating a two-part texture. After eight bars, the second violin enters with the same melody, a third voice is added, and the piece becomes truly polyphonic. This is the canon itself: a strict imitation in which each voice enters at the same pitch after an eight-bar delay.

As the third violin starts its entry, the first violin begins to introduce faster notes and variations. This multiplies the contrapuntal interest. Despite the strictness of the canon, the three violins never sound identical at any given moment, because each is at a different stage of the melody and variation. The texture thus evolves from thin to rich and dense, with each layer adding more rhythmic complexity.

9. Structure and Form |

Canon in D is structured as a set of variations over a ground bass. The two-bar bass pattern repeats 28 times in the version most often performed. The piece can be divided into an introduction (bass alone) and then a series of variations, each introducing new rhythmic figures and subtle changes in the violin parts. There is no contrasting middle section; unity is achieved through the constant bass and the unchanging key of D major.

You may come across the term ‘passacaglia’ when studying ground bass forms. Although Canon in D is not strictly a passacaglia because the bass pattern appears in the upper voices too, the principle of continuous variation over a repeating bass is very similar. Recognising this form will help you analyse other Baroque works in your course.

10. Instrumentation and Timbre |

The original instrumentation is three violins and basso continuo, the latter typically consisting of a cello or viola da gamba plus a chordal instrument such as a harpsichord, organ or lute. The three violins share the same timbre, which helps the imitation sound seamless and blended. The bass provides a warm, grounding foundation, while the harpsichord adds a bright, percussive edge that helps articulate the harmonic rhythm.

Modern performances sometimes replace the violins with other instruments – ranging from string orchestra to guitar ensemble. In your SQA case study, however, you should focus on the original Baroque scoring unless told otherwise. Describing how the choice of instruments affects the overall sound demonstrates a high level of analytical awareness.

11. Style and Period |

Canon in D belongs to the middle Baroque period (c. 1600–1750). The style is characterised by a continuous driving rhythm, the use of a ground bass, contrapuntal writing, and terraced dynamics. Emotional expression in Baroque music is generally unified throughout a movement, meaning one mood or ‘affect’ is maintained from beginning to end. In this piece, that affect is serene joy and elegance.

When linking this piece to its period, you can mention typical Baroque features such as the importance of basso continuo, contrapuntal textures, and the absence of the piano – the harpsichord was the main keyboard instrument. Understanding the historical context allows you to explain why certain musical decisions were made, which deepens your case study.

12. Tips for Writing Your Own Case Study |

Start by listening to the piece several times without any distractions. Identify the most obvious features first, such as the metre, tempo, and main instruments. Then break down each musical element one by one as we have done here. Use a concept checklist based on SQA music concepts: melody, harmony, rhythm/tempo, texture, structure, timbre, dynamics, and style.

Always support your observations with specific evidence – for example, ‘the first violin melody uses mostly conjunct motion and forms an arch shape’ is far stronger than ‘the melody is nice’. Practise with different pieces: try a pop song, a film theme, or a Scottish folk tune. The more you practise applying concepts to real music, the more confident you will become in SQA assessments.
