1. Integers, Decimals and Place Value |

Integer: An integer is a whole number that can be positive, negative, or zero, with no fractional or decimal part. For example, -5, 0 and 8 are integers. Think of the word ‘integral’ – complete and unbroken.

Decimal: A decimal is a number that uses a decimal point to separate the whole part from the fractional part, such as 3.14 or 0.6. The digits after the point represent tenths, hundredths, thousandths and so on.

Place value: The value of a digit determined by its position in a number. In 427, the 4 is worth 400 (hundreds), the 2 is worth 20 (tens) and the 7 is worth 7 (ones). In decimals, the first place after the point is tenths.

Negative number: A number less than zero, written with a minus sign, e.g. -3. These are used for temperatures below zero, debts or depths below sea level.

Significant figure (s.f.): A meaningful digit used to express a number to a certain degree of accuracy. The first significant figure is the first non-zero digit when reading from left to right. For example, 0.0052 rounded to 1 s.f. is 0.005, and to 2 s.f. is 0.0052 itself.

2. Fractions, Decimals and Percentages |

Fraction: A way of representing a part of a whole, written as numerator over denominator, such as ¾. The horizontal line means division: 3 divided by 4.

Numerator: The top number in a fraction, showing how many equal parts are taken. In ⅝, 5 is the numerator.

Equivalent fractions: Fractions that represent the same value, even though they use different numerators and denominators, such as ½ = ²⁄₄ = ³⁄₆.

3. Ratio and Proportion |

Ratio: A way of comparing two or more quantities, showing how many times one value contains another. Written with a colon, e.g. 3:2. The order matters – 3:2 is not the same as 2:3.

Simplify a ratio: To divide every part of a ratio by the same common factor until the terms are the smallest possible whole numbers. 10:15 simplifies to 2:3 by dividing both sides by 5.

Unitary method: A technique for solving proportion problems by first finding the value of one unit, then scaling up or down. For example, if 5 oranges cost £1.50, find the cost of 1 orange (30p) and then multiply for any number.
