1. Welcome to Year 10 Economics |

Starting Year 10 Economics is an exciting step. This is the moment you move from general awareness of money and business to a structured understanding of how societies allocate scarce resources. AQA’s GCSE specification 8136 has been crafted to give you both a microeconomic and a macroeconomic perspective. You will not just memorise definitions; you will learn to apply theories to real-world situations, analyse data and evaluate government policies. The course rewards curiosity and clear logical thinking, and many students find that economics changes the way they view the news, their own spending choices and the decisions made by firms and governments.

Economics is often called the study of choice. Because resources are limited and our wants are virtually unlimited, every decision involves a trade-off. In Year 10 you will begin by exploring the fundamental economic problem and gradually build up to complex topics like market failure and macroeconomic policy. The bridging nature of this year means you do not need any prior knowledge; all concepts are introduced step by step. However, a positive attitude, willingness to discuss ideas and a habit of reading the news will give you a significant head start.

2. Understanding the AQA GCSE Economics Course | 了解AQA GCSE经济课程

The AQA GCSE Economics course is split into two main themes: How markets work and How the economy works. These correspond to the two exam papers you will sit at the end of Year 11. Each paper is worth 80 marks and lasts 1 hour 45 minutes, making up 50% of your final GCSE grade. Knowing the structure early helps you focus your revision and understand why both micro and macro topics matter equally.

Paper Topic Marks Question style
Paper 1 How markets work 80 Multiple choice, short answer, data response, extended writing
Paper 2 How the economy works 80 Multiple choice, short answer, data response, extended writing

Both papers include a mix of quantitative and qualitative questions. You will be expected to perform simple calculations, such as percentage changes, total revenue, total costs, profit and break-even output. There is also a requirement to calculate and interpret price elasticity of demand (PED). Extended responses often carry 9 or 12 marks and require a logical chain of reasoning, supported by relevant examples and diagrams. Familiarising yourself with the mark schemes early in the course will help you meet the assessment objectives: demonstration of knowledge, application, analysis and evaluation.

3. How Markets Work: An Overview |

The microeconomic half of the AQA course explores how individual consumers, producers and markets behave. You begin with the basic economic problem: finite resources and infinite wants. From this, you derive the need for choice and the concept of opportunity cost. Then you examine the role of markets in allocating resources through the price mechanism. The journey takes you through determinants of demand and supply, how equilibrium price and quantity are established, and why prices change in response to shifts in market conditions.

Key microeconomic agents are households, firms and the government. You will see how households supply factors of production and consume goods, while firms produce goods and services to maximise profit. The concept of elasticity will refine your understanding of how responsive buyers and sellers are to price changes, a skill essential for analysing real-world markets such as energy, housing or transport. The section also covers production, costs, revenue and profit, leading to an analysis of different market structures from highly competitive to concentrated markets.

4. How the Economy Works: The Big Picture |

Switching to macroeconomics, you will look at the economy as a whole. Here the focus shifts to national objectives: sustainable economic growth, low and stable inflation, low unemployment, and a satisfactory balance of payments on the current account. The AQA course introduces the circular flow of income, the measurement of national income (GDP), and the government’s tools of fiscal, monetary and supply-side policies. You will also explore how international trade, exchange rates and globalisation affect domestic economic performance.

Understanding macroeconomic policy is especially rewarding because it links directly to current affairs. When you hear about the Bank of England changing interest rates, the Chancellor announcing a budget, or debates about tariffs, you will be able to use your economic toolkit to explain the possible consequences. The course also considers the limitations of markets at the national level, market failures that can arise from externalities, information gaps and the public goods problem, and why government intervention is sometimes necessary to correct these inefficiencies.

5. The Economic Problem and Resource Allocation |

Every economy must answer three fundamental questions: What to produce? How to produce? And for whom to produce? These arise because resources such as land, labour, capital and enterprise are scarce. Opportunity cost lies at the heart of economics: it is the benefit of the next best alternative forgone whenever a choice is made. Whether you are deciding how to spend your weekend or a government is allocating its budget, trade-offs are unavoidable.

Markets provide one way to allocate resources, driven by the interaction of buyers and sellers. In a free market, prices act as signals that convey information about scarcity and consumer preferences. However, the AQA course also invites you to examine the advantages and disadvantages of a market economy compared with a planned economy. Many real-world economies are mixed, combining market mechanisms with government intervention to achieve a fairer distribution of income and to correct market failures.

6. Demand, Supply and Price Determination |

Demand refers to the quantity of a good or service that consumers are willing and able to buy at various prices over a period of time. The law of demand states that, ceteris paribus, as price increases, quantity demanded decreases. Factors that can shift the entire demand curve include changes in income, tastes and preferences, the price of substitutes and complements, population size and advertising. A shift to the right signals an increase in demand, while a shift left indicates a decrease.

Supply is the quantity that producers are willing and able to sell at different prices. The law of supply suggests that higher prices typically encourage higher quantity supplied. Supply curve shifts can be caused by changes in the costs of production, technology, indirect taxes, subsidies and external shocks such as weather conditions. The interaction of demand and supply determines the equilibrium market price. When a market is in equilibrium, there is no tendency for price to change unless an external factor disturbs demand or supply.

A significant skill is calculating and interpreting price elasticity of demand (PED). The formula is: PED = percentage change in quantity demanded divided by percentage change in price. You can show this as PED = %ΔQd ÷ %ΔP. If PED is greater than 1, demand is price elastic; if less than 1, it is price inelastic. Firms use PED to predict the effect of price changes on total revenue. For instance, if demand is elastic, cutting prices can raise total revenue, while for inelastic demand it may reduce it.

7. Production, Costs and Revenue |

Producers aim to combine factors of production efficiently. In the short run, at least one factor is fixed, so output can only be increased by adding more variable inputs. Productivity measures output per unit of input, and specialisation and division of labour can boost productivity significantly. However, specialisation also carries risks such as worker boredom and vulnerability to changes in demand for the specialised output.

Total revenue equals price multiplied by quantity sold. Costs are typically divided into fixed costs, which do not vary with output (e.g. rent), and variable costs, which rise as output increases (e.g. raw materials). Total cost is the sum of fixed and variable costs. Profit is total revenue minus total cost. You must be able to calculate break-even output, which is the level of sales where total revenue exactly equals total costs. Understanding these cost structures helps explain why some firms leave a market and why others can earn supernormal profit in the short run.

8. Market Failure and Government Intervention |

Markets do not always lead to an efficient or socially desirable outcome. Market failure occurs when the free market fails to allocate resources optimally. The AQA specification highlights several causes: positive and negative externalities, public goods, merit and demerit goods, information asymmetries, and monopoly power. A negative production externality, such as pollution from a factory, means that social cost exceeds private cost, leading to overproduction.

Governments intervene to correct these failures using a variety of tools: indirect taxation to internalise external costs, subsidies to encourage merit goods, minimum and maximum prices, laws and regulations, and the direct provision of public goods such as street lighting. When studying these interventions, you will need to evaluate their effectiveness, considering possible unintended consequences and government failure. For example, a high tax on cigarettes may reduce consumption but could also lead to illegal trading.

9. Government Objectives and Macroeconomic Policies |

Governments pursue several macroeconomic objectives that are central to Paper 2. Economic growth is typically measured by the percentage change in real GDP; low unemployment focuses on the proportion of the labour force willing and able to work but without a job; inflation targets aim for a low and stable rise in the general price level; and a sustainable current account position on the balance of payments. Sometimes these objectives can come into conflict, such as when strong growth pushes inflation higher.

The main policy instruments are fiscal policy (changes in government spending and taxation), monetary policy (control of interest rates, money supply and exchange rates, usually managed by the Bank of England) and supply-side policies aimed at increasing the productive capacity of the economy. A key feature of AQA questions is the ability to analyse how a policy might affect different objectives simultaneously, and to make justified judgements about which policy is most appropriate in a given context.

10. International Trade and Globalisation |

International trade allows countries to specialise in the production of goods and services in which they have a comparative advantage, and then to exchange these for other goods, increasing total world output. However, trade also brings challenges: some domestic industries may shrink, causing structural unemployment, and economies can become exposed to external shocks. Exchange rates play a crucial role in determining the competitiveness of a country’s exports and the price of imports.

Globalisation refers to the increasing interconnectedness and interdependence of economies through trade, investment, technology and migration. Many multinational corporations operate across dozens of countries, influencing local labour markets, the environment and government tax revenues. You will debate the benefits and drawbacks of globalisation and examine policies such as free trade agreements and protectionist measures like tariffs. Analysing real examples, such as the effects of Brexit on UK trade, will sharpen your evaluation skills.

11. Effective Study Skills for Economics |

Success in AQA GCSE Economics depends not just on memorising content but on developing a flexible way of thinking. Start by building a glossary of key terms with clear definitions and your own examples. Visual organisers such as mind maps for each topic and cause-effect diagrams are excellent for connecting ideas. Since the course is linear, regularly revisiting earlier topics prevents knowledge decay. Practise drawing and labelling diagrams, including demand and supply curves and the production possibility frontier, as these often feature in answers.

AQA GCSE

Quantitative skills will be tested, so make sure you are comfortable with: calculating percentage changes; finding total revenue, total costs and profit; determining break-even points; and working out price elasticity of demand. Use past paper questions from the AQA website to practise these calculations under timed conditions. The more you practise, the quicker you will spot which formula to use and how to interpret your answers. Keep a dedicated notebook for worked examples and common mistakes.

Writing clearly and logically is equally important. For extended 9- and 12-mark questions, use a structure: define key terms, build a logical chain of analysis with ‘this leads to’ statements, and finish with a well-supported evaluation that considers different viewpoints or the impact in the short run versus the long run. Reading quality economic journalism, such as articles on BBC News business pages or The Economist’s schools sections, will give you a bank of real-world examples to use in essays.

12. Preparing for Assessments and Beyond |

As you progress through Year 10, combine regular end-of-topic tests with cumulative revision. Use the AQA mark schemes to understand exactly what examiners look for: precise knowledge, application to a given context, analysis with logical steps and evaluative judgement. Create revision resources such as flashcards for definitions, formula sheets and summary tables comparing different economic policies. Form a study group to discuss recent economic events and test each other’s understanding of key models.
