Upstage: The area of the stage furthest from the audience. Moving upstage draws the audience’s eye into the distance.

Downstage: The part of the stage closest to the audience. It is the strongest position for creating intimacy or emphasis.

Eye contact: Directing the gaze towards another performer, the audience or a specific point. It can show connection, dominance or secrecy.

Naturalism: A style aiming to recreate life on stage as realistically as possible, with believable characters, everyday speech and authentic detail.

Epic theatre: A style associated with Brecht that reminds the audience they are watching a play, using techniques like direct address, placards and narration to encourage critical thinking.
