1. Weather vs. Climate |
Many students use ‘weather’ and ‘climate’ as if they were the same thing. A typical exam error is writing ‘the climate was rainy yesterday’ or claiming that one cold winter disproves global warming.
Weather describes short-term atmospheric conditions – temperature, precipitation, wind – at a specific place and time, often changing within hours. Climate, by contrast, is the average weather pattern calculated over at least 30 years. When you see a question about a long-term trend or a region’s typical conditions, you must think in terms of climate, not a single day’s weather.
To avoid this trap, always ask: ‘Is the timescale days or decades?’ If it is decades, use ‘climate’; if it is hours or days, use ‘weather’.
2. Weathering vs. Erosion |
Students often write ‘the rock was eroded by freeze-thaw’ or assume that weathering involves movement. Another common mistake is thinking weathering is caused only by wind.
Weathering is the breakdown of rocks in situ – meaning the rock stays where it is. Freeze-thaw, onion-skin (exfoliation) and chemical weathering all weaken or disintegrate rock without removing the fragments. Erosion, however, involves the removal and transport of weathered material by agents such as running water, wind, ice or gravity. The key distinction is movement: no movement = weathering; with movement = erosion.
A simple mnemonic: ‘Weathering Weakens in place, Erosion Exports material.’ Use this in your written answers to show the examiner you understand the process.
(Weathering Weakens in place, Erosion Exports material.)”
3. River Processes: Erosion, Transportation and Deposition |
A widespread error is stating that a river only erodes its bed and banks and then instantly drops its load. Students often mix up the four types of river erosion or fail to explain why a river deposits material.
Rivers erode through hydraulic action (force of water), abrasion (rock fragments scraping against channel), attrition (rocks colliding and becoming smaller) and solution (dissolving of minerals). Be precise in definitions – do not use ‘abrasion’ and ‘attrition’ as if they are the same. Transportation then moves the load by traction, saltation, suspension and solution. Deposition occurs when the river loses energy – usually when velocity drops on the inside of a meander, at a river mouth, or when flow becomes shallow. Understanding the energy balance is the foundation of all river landform questions.
Draw a simple cross-section of a meander and annotate where erosion (outer bank, faster flow) and deposition (inner bank, slower flow) occur. Labelling a diagram correctly is often worth several marks.
4. Coastal Landforms Sequence |
Many exam answers jump from a crack in a headland directly to a stack, skipping intermediate stages. Others name features incorrectly, for example calling a stump a stack or mixing up the order of caves, arches and stacks.
The correct sequence on a discordant coastline begins with a line of weakness, such as a joint or crack, which wave action enlarges into a sea cave. If the cave penetrates through the headland, it becomes a sea arch. When the roof of the arch collapses under gravity and continued erosion, a sea stack is left isolated. Eventually, the stack is worn down to a stump, visible only at low tide. Each stage is linked to a specific combination of wave erosion, weathering and mass movement – not just ‘the sea hitting the rock’.
Use the mnemonic ‘Caves, Arches, Stacks, Stumps’ (CASS) to keep the sequence straight. Always describe the processes, not just the names.
5. Grid References: 4-figure vs 6-figure |
One of the most common map-skill mistakes is reading a four-figure grid reference by giving the easting and northing in the wrong order, or counting the grid lines themselves instead of the space they enclose. With six-figure references, students often omit the ‘along the corridor and up the stairs’ rule or estimate tenths incorrectly.
A four-figure reference identifies a grid square. You always read the eastings first (horizontal numbers increasing eastwards) and then the northings (vertical numbers increasing northwards). Remember: ‘Easting first, Northing next’. The grid line numbers are the ones on the map margin. For the square’s reference, give the number of the bottom-left corner. A six-figure reference locates a point within that square: divide the square into ten imaginary divisions for both eastings and northings, count how many tenths across from the left, then how many tenths up from the bottom. Write the easting digits (including the tenths) followed by the northing digits (including the tenths).
Practising with a local Ordnance Survey map sheet is ideal. Say aloud: ‘along the corridor (eastings), up the stairs (northings)’. Rehearse estimating tenths for both directions; accuracy improves rapidly.
6. Population Pyramids and Development |
Learners frequently assume that a pyramid-shaped structure always indicates a developing country and that a pillar-shaped structure always means a developed country, without examining the axis labels or considering migration effects.
A population pyramid tells you about birth rates, death rates and migration. A wide base implies high birth rate, often linked to limited access to contraception, high infant mortality or agricultural economies – typical of many LEDCs (Less Economically Developed Countries). A narrow base and broader middle suggest lower birth rates and an ageing population, often seen in MEDCs (More Economically Developed Countries). However, a country with a large temporary workforce (e.g. oil-rich Gulf states) can show a barrel shape due to inward migration of working-age males, which does not automatically mean high development. Always check the percentage scales and the gender split before concluding.
A useful technique is to annotate the pyramid directly: label ‘high birth rate’, ‘in-migration bulge’, ‘low life expectancy’ and then link these labels to development indicators such as GNI per capita or infant mortality.
7. Renewable Resources Are Not Infinite |
A classic misconception is that ‘renewable’ means the resource can be used without limit. Students often state that solar energy, wind or water power will never run out, ignoring the difference between stock and flow resources and the impact of overuse on renewal rates.
Renewable resources are those that can be regenerated naturally on a human timescale – but only if they are used at a rate slower than or equal to the rate of renewal. Groundwater, for instance, is renewable because rainwater recharges aquifers, but over-extraction can lower the water table permanently, causing saltwater intrusion in coastal areas. Similarly, overfishing can collapse fish stocks even though fish are a biological renewable resource. The key concept is sustainable yield: the maximum amount that can be removed without causing long-term depletion.
Whenever you mention a renewable resource in an exam, add a qualification: ‘provided it is managed sustainably’. This instantly lifts your answer to a higher level.
Students often treat GDP per capita as the single true measure of development, and they mistakenly think a high GDP automatically means a high quality of life for everyone in the country.
GDP per capita is an average measure of economic output and masks huge internal inequalities. A small elite may control most of the wealth, leaving large parts of the population in poverty. Moreover, GDP says nothing about health, education, gender equality or environmental quality. The Human Development Index (HDI) combines life expectancy, mean years of schooling and GNI per capita to give a broader picture. Some countries with similar GDP per capita can have very different HDI scores because of investment in health and education. For CCEA questions, you should always use multiple indicators – such as literacy rates, infant mortality and access to clean water – rather than relying on GDP alone.
A quick slogan: ‘GDP counts money, HDI counts people.’ Use it to remind yourself to choose meaningful indicators.
9. Urbanisation vs Urban Growth |
Many students use ‘urbanisation’ and ‘urban growth’ interchangeably, losing marks in data-response and essay questions. They also think urbanisation means simply ‘more people living in cities’.
Urban growth is the absolute increase in the physical size or population of an urban area. Urbanisation, however, is the proportion of a country’s total population living in urban areas rising over time. A city can grow physically (urban growth) without increasing the national urban percentage, if the rural population is also growing at a similar rate. The key is the proportion, not the absolute number. Rapid urbanisation is typical of many emerging economies, but urban growth can happen in already highly urbanised countries without any further change in the urban percentage.
When labelling graphs, use ‘proportion urban (%)’ for urbanisation and ‘urban population (millions)’ for urban growth. A simple diagram distinguishing the two can save you from a common avoidable mistake.
10. Storm Hydrographs and Lag Time | 暴雨水位过程线与滞后时间误解
A frequent misunderstanding is believing that the peak discharge of a river occurs at the same moment as the heaviest rainfall. Students also confuse the rising limb and recession limb, or fail to explain the factors that shorten or lengthen lag time.
A storm hydrograph plots river discharge (cumecs) against time, showing how a river responds to a rainfall event. The peak rainfall usually occurs before the peak discharge; the time difference between the two is the lag time. Lag time is influenced by basin characteristics: steep slopes, impermeable surfaces (urban concrete), a lack of vegetation and already saturated soil all reduce lag time and increase flood risk. Dense forest cover, permeable rocks and dry soils increase lag time, delaying and lowering the peak discharge. In the exam, always identify and explain these factors rather than just stating ‘lag time is short’.
Draw a generic hydrograph and annotate it with labels: ‘rising limb’, ‘peak rainfall’, ‘peak discharge’, ‘recession limb’ and ‘lag time’. Being able to sketch and interpret this diagram is a mark-earning skill for both physical and human geography contexts. Practice explaining how the shape of the hydrograph would change if a woodland was replaced by a housing estate.
