1. Philosophical Enquiry and Argumentation |

Philosophical enquiry begins with a clear understanding of what an argument is. In philosophy, an argument is not a quarrel but a set of statements where one or more premises are put forward to support a conclusion. The premises are reasons or evidence, and the conclusion is what the argument tries to establish. For an argument to be strong, the premises must be relevant, true, and sufficient to support the conclusion. A good philosopher always examines whether the premises are acceptable and whether they genuinely lead to the conclusion.

Inductive and deductive reasoning are the two main types of argument. Deductive arguments aim to provide premises that guarantee the conclusion. If the premises are true, the conclusion must be true. For example: All humans are mortal; Socrates is a human; therefore, Socrates is mortal. Inductive arguments, on the other hand, aim to make the conclusion probable based on evidence. Most scientific reasoning is inductive. When evaluating inductive arguments, you consider the strength of the evidence and whether there are counterexamples.

A key skill in philosophical enquiry is the ability to identify fallacies and hidden assumptions. A fallacy is a defect in reasoning that weakens an argument. Common fallacies include attacking the person rather than the argument (ad hominem) and appealing to emotion instead of logic. Hidden assumptions are unstated beliefs that must be true for the argument to work. Uncovering these assumptions is crucial because if an assumption is false, the argument collapses. Always ask yourself, ‘What must I already believe for this to be convincing?’

2. Moral Philosophy: Utilitarianism |

Utilitarianism is a consequentialist ethical theory that judges actions by their outcomes. Its core principle is the Greatest Happiness Principle: the right action is the one that produces the greatest amount of happiness for the greatest number of people. Jeremy Bentham, the founder of classical utilitarianism, believed that happiness could be quantified using the hedonic calculus. This calculus weighs factors such as intensity, duration, certainty, and extent of pleasure or pain to determine the moral worth of an action.

John Stuart Mill refined utilitarianism by distinguishing between higher and lower pleasures. He argued that intellectual and moral pleasures are qualitatively superior to bodily pleasures. Mill famously said, ‘It is better to be a human being dissatisfied than a pig satisfied.’ This distinction addresses the criticism that utilitarianism reduces morality to animalistic pleasure-seeking. For Mill, the quality of happiness matters as much as, if not more than, the quantity. A competent judge who has experienced both types of pleasure will always prefer the higher.

Utilitarianism is attractive because it promotes welfare and seems impartial. However, critics point out problems: it can justify unjust actions if they lead to a greater overall happiness; it demands that we calculate consequences for every decision, which is impractical; and it struggles with rights and justice. For example, punishing an innocent person could be justified if it creates more overall happiness through deterrence. These criticisms have led to act and rule utilitarianism, with rule utilitarianism arguing that we should follow rules that generally maximise happiness.

3. Moral Philosophy: Kantian Ethics |

Immanuel Kant’s ethical theory is deontological, meaning it focuses on duty and the intrinsic rightness of actions, not consequences. For Kant, the only thing that is good without qualification is a good will. A good will acts out of respect for the moral law, not out of inclination or self-interest. An action has moral worth only when it is done from duty. The foundation of Kant’s ethics is the Categorical Imperative, a command that applies universally and unconditionally, unlike hypothetical imperatives which depend on personal desires.

The first formulation of the Categorical Imperative is the Formula of Universal Law: Act only according to that maxim whereby you can at the same time will that it should become a universal law. To test a maxim, you must consider whether it can be universalised without contradiction. Kant gives the example of making a false promise. If everyone made false promises, the institution of promising would collapse, so the maxim cannot be universalised. Lying is therefore always wrong, even if it leads to good consequences.

The second formulation is the Formula of Humanity: Act in such a way that you treat humanity, whether in your own person or in the person of another, always as an end and never merely as a means. This means we must respect the rational autonomy of every person and never use them simply as tools. Kantian ethics thus forms a strong foundation for human rights. However, critics say it is too rigid, ignores emotional aspects of morality, and can lead to conflicting duties. It also struggles with the problem of ‘clashing duties’ where telling the truth might cause great harm.

4. Moral Philosophy: Divine Command Theory |

Divine Command Theory (DCT) holds that morality originates from God’s commands. An action is right if God commands it, and wrong if God forbids it. This theory is popular within theistic traditions and provides a clear, objective foundation for ethics. It explains why morality feels authoritative and non-negotiable: because it is grounded in a perfect divine lawgiver. For believers, DCT also solves the problem of moral motivation by linking ethical life to religious devotion and the promise of an afterlife.

The most famous challenge to DCT is the Euthyphro Dilemma, posed by Plato in his dialogue Euthyphro. The dilemma asks: Is an action right because God commands it, or does God command it because it is right? The first horn suggests that morality is arbitrary; God could have commanded cruelty and it would be right. The second horn implies that there is a standard of rightness independent of God, thus undermining DCT’s claim that God is the source of morality. This dilemma forces believers to reconsider how divine will and moral goodness relate.

Some philosophers respond by arguing that God’s nature, not his will alone, is the standard of goodness. This modified DCT escapes the arbitrary horn because God’s commands flow from his essentially good nature. However, critics argue that we still need independent ethical knowledge to identify God’s nature as good, so the dilemma persists. In SQA exams, you must be able to explain both horns and evaluate possible solutions, showing how the dilemma challenges DCT’s plausibility.

5. Philosophy of Religion: The Design Argument |

The Design Argument, also called the Teleological Argument, infers the existence of God from the apparent order and purpose in the natural world. Its classic formulation is William Paley’s watchmaker analogy. If you found a watch lying on the ground, its complex arrangement of parts serving a purpose would lead you to infer a watchmaker. Similarly, the intricate complexity of the universe, especially living organisms, suggests an intelligent designer. The argument is inductive and a posteriori, based on experience of the world.

David Hume offered powerful criticisms of the design argument even before Paley. He argued that the analogy is weak: the universe is not sufficiently like a machine to justify the inference. Furthermore, the presence of imperfections and evil in the world suggests a flawed or limited designer, not an omnipotent, benevolent God. The argument from analogy can at best suggest a team of gods or an inferior deity. Hume also noted that we have no experience of universe-making to draw upon.

Modern science, particularly Darwin’s theory of evolution by natural selection, further weakened the design argument. Evolution provides a naturalistic explanation for the appearance of design in living things. Complexity and adaptation arise through gradual, random variations filtered by survival advantages. This explains apparent purpose without needing a designer. However, some defenders of the argument point to fine-tuning in physics: the fundamental constants of the universe seem precisely set to allow life. This cosmic fine-tuning is now the main focus of contemporary design arguments.

6. Philosophy of Religion: The Cosmological Argument |

The Cosmological Argument attempts to prove God’s existence as the first cause or necessary explanation of the universe. It is based on the simple observation that everything that exists has a cause. Thomas Aquinas presented three ways, but the most famous is the Second Way: the Argument from Causation. Aquinas observed that we see a chain of efficient causes in the world; nothing causes itself. To avoid an infinite regress of causes, there must be an uncaused first cause, which we call God.

Aquinas also offered the Argument from Contingency. Contingent beings depend on something else for their existence and can fail to exist. If everything were contingent, there might have been a time when nothing existed, and then nothing would exist now. Since things do exist, there must be a necessary being that has its own reason for existence and grounds the existence of all contingent beings. This necessary being is God.

Critics such as David Hume and Bertrand Russell challenged the argument. Hume argued that we have no experience of the creation of universes, so we cannot apply the cause-and-effect principle beyond the world. The fallacy of composition occurs if we assume that because each part of the universe has a cause, the whole universe must have a cause. Russell simply said, ‘The universe is just there, and that’s all.’ Another major objection: even if a first cause exists, why call it God? The uncaused cause could be an impersonal force or a committee of gods.

7. Philosophy of Religion: The Problem of Evil |

The problem of evil is the most powerful argument against the existence of an all-loving, all-powerful God. It is often presented as an inconsistent triad: if God is omnipotent, he can prevent evil; if God is omnibenevolent, he would want to prevent evil; but evil exists. Therefore, a God with these attributes cannot exist. Evil is typically divided into moral evil, caused by human free actions (like murder), and natural evil, arising from natural processes (like earthquakes and disease).

One classic response is the Free Will Defence, developed by Alvin Plantinga. It argues that moral evil results from the misuse of free will, which is a greater good worth allowing evil. A world with free creatures is better than a world of robots, even if they sometimes choose wrongly. God cannot create free beings and guarantee they never sin, because that would contradict free will. Natural evil is sometimes explained as a consequence of moral evil (the Fall) or as necessary for soul-making, as suggested by John Hick.

The evidential problem of evil points to the sheer amount and distribution of suffering. Even if some evil is necessary for free will or soul-making, the vast quantity of seemingly pointless suffering appears incompatible with a loving God. The suffering of innocent children and animals is especially challenging. Some theists propose theodicies, while others argue that God’s ways are beyond human understanding (the sceptical theist approach). In your revision, be sure to distinguish between the logical problem and the evidential problem.

8. Free Will and Determinism |

The free will debate explores whether human beings have genuine control over their actions or whether all events, including human choices, are causally determined. Hard determinism claims that every event has a cause, and since human actions are events, they too are determined. This means we are not morally responsible, because we could not have done otherwise. Libertarians, on the other hand, argue that determinism is false and that we have metaphysical free will.

Many philosophers seek a middle ground through compatibilism. Compatibilists (or soft determinists) argue that free will is compatible with determinism. They redefine free will as the ability to act according to one’s desires and intentions, without external coercion. Even if choices are determined, as long as they emerge from our internal states, we can be held morally responsible. Compatibilism preserves moral praise and blame while accepting a scientific, determined universe.

Modern neuroscience adds a new dimension to the debate. Experiments by Benjamin Libet and others suggest that brain activity preparing for a voluntary movement begins before the conscious decision to move. This raises the question of whether our conscious will is merely an afterthought. While some interpret this as evidence for determinism, others argue that consciousness still has a veto power. For SQA exams, understanding these three positions—and the implications for moral responsibility—is essential.

9. Personal Identity |

The problem of personal identity asks what makes a person the same individual over time. Is it the continuity of the body, the brain, memory, or psychological traits? John Locke proposed the memory theory: a person at a later time is the same as a person at an earlier time if they can remember the earlier person’s experiences. For Locke, personal identity is a matter of psychological continuity and consciousness, not substance, whether physical or spiritual.

Objections to memory theory are numerous. Thomas Reid pointed out the Brave Officer paradox: an old general remembers being a brave officer, and the brave officer remembers being a small boy, but the old general does not remember being the boy. If identity relies on direct memory, the general is not the same person as the boy, even though we have a transitive link. This suggests memory alone is insufficient. Additionally, memory is fallible and we forget most of our lives, so it cannot fully constitute identity.

Modern accounts often favour psychological continuity theory, which includes overlapping chains of memory, intention, and character. The body theory claims physical continuity, especially brain continuity, is essential. Derek Parfit’s teletransportation thought experiments challenge both. He argues that what matters for survival is not identity but psychological connectedness and continuity. If we were disintegrated and replicated perfectly on Mars, would we still be us? Such questions reveal deep puzzles about the self and are central to SQA philosophy discussions.

10. Analysing Philosophical Texts |

A crucial skill for SQA Philosophy is the ability to analyse extracts from primary and secondary sources. When you encounter a text, first identify its main conclusion and the supporting premises. Look for key connective words: ‘therefore’, ‘hence’, ‘because’, ‘since’ signal argument structure. Paraphrase arguments in your own words to ensure you have understood them correctly. Also, check whether the argument is deductive or inductive and whether the terms are used consistently.

Next, evaluate the strengths and weaknesses. For deductive arguments, test the truth of the premises and the logical validity. Could the premises be true but the conclusion false? If yes, the argument is invalid. For inductive arguments, assess the quality of the evidence: is the sample representative? Are there hidden biases? Look out for underlying assumptions and consider counterarguments. Could someone reasonable reject the premises? If so, your evaluation must explain why the argument might still be persuasive or why it ultimately fails.

Finally, practise writing structured philosophical responses. Begin with a clear thesis statement, then present argument reconstruction, followed by balanced evaluation. Use signposting phrases like ‘This argument succeeds in showing… but faces the objection that…’. In SQA marking, clarity and coherence are rewarded. Remember that philosophers are not simply looking for your opinion; they want to see how well you can reason about reasons.
