1. What Is Media Studies? |

Media Studies is the academic field that examines all forms of mass communication. It explores how media texts – such as films, television programmes, advertisements, newspapers, video games and social media posts – are created, how they reach audiences and what impact they have on individuals and society. In SQA Media, you will learn to look beyond the surface and ask questions about purpose, meaning and influence.

The subject encourages you to become an active reader rather than a passive consumer. You will analyse how camera angles, sound, editing and language combine to construct a particular version of reality. By doing so, you gain the tools to decode the hidden messages that shape our daily lives.

2. Media Language: Signs and Codes |

Media Language refers to the visual and auditory building blocks through which meaning is created. The most fundamental concept is the sign, which consists of the signifier (the physical form, such as a word or image) and the signified (the mental concept it represents). For example, a red rose on an advertisement may signify love or romance.

Codes are systems of signs that follow certain conventions. There are technical codes, such as camera work and lighting, and symbolic codes, such as colour and body language. When you analyse a media text, you are breaking down these codes to explain how they work together. For instance, high-key lighting often suggests happiness or clarity, while low-key lighting creates mystery or fear.

Written language is also a code. Headlines, slogans and captions use devices such as alliteration, puns and imperative verbs to grab attention. Always ask: What choices has the producer made, and why? Every detail is deliberate.

3. Visual Analysis: Shots and Angles |

Camera shots and angles are among the first elements you should examine. An extreme long shot establishes the setting and can make a character appear small or vulnerable. A close-up reveals emotion and draws the audience into a character’s inner world. The medium shot is common for dialogue because it mimics natural human interaction.

Angles carry strong connotations. A high-angle shot looks down on the subject, suggesting weakness or inferiority. A low-angle shot looks up, conveying power, authority or menace. An eye-level shot creates equality and neutrality. When writing about a text, never simply label the shot – always explain its effect on the audience and its contribution to the narrative.

4. Sound Elements: Sound and Music |

Sound is just as important as the image. Diegetic sound originates from within the story world – dialogue, footsteps, car engines, music from a radio a character is listening to. Non-diegetic sound exists outside the story world, such as a film’s soundtrack or a voice-over narrator. This distinction helps you decide whether a sound is meant to guide the audience’s emotions or to be part of the action.

Parallel sound matches the mood of the scene, while contrapuntal sound deliberately clashes with it to create unease or irony. Music can establish genre, signal a character’s arrival or build tension. When you hear a rising tempo or a sudden silence, pause and consider what response the producer wants to evoke.

5. Editing and Montage |

Editing is the process of selecting and combining shots to create a finished product. It controls pace, continuity, and the relationship between scenes. A fast-cut sequence creates excitement or chaos; a slow dissolve often indicates the passage of time or a memory. The key transition types – cut, fade, dissolve and wipe – each carry different meanings.

Montage, a concept pioneered by Soviet filmmakers, arranges images to generate intellectual or emotional associations. In modern media, it can compress time, show a character’s development or compare contrasting images for effect. Continuity editing, on the other hand, aims to make the cuts invisible so the story flows smoothly. Spotting where the editor has broken the 180-degree rule or created a match cut will earn you marks in analysis.

6. Narrative Structure |

Narrative is the way a story is organised and told. A familiar model is Todorov’s equilibrium theory: a state of balance (equilibrium) is disrupted by an event (disequilibrium), and the story follows efforts to restore a new equilibrium. This structure appears in countless films, advertisements and news stories.

Propp’s character archetypes, such as the hero, villain, donor and helper, provide another tool. Even in non-fiction media, these roles can be observed. Binary oppositions – good vs evil, rich vs poor, nature vs technology – are central to Levi-Strauss’s theory and often drive conflict in a text. When analysing narrative, look for enigma codes (questions that hook the audience) and action codes (events that propel the plot).

7. Characters and Representation |

Representation is the way media portrays people, places, events and ideas. No representation is neutral – it is always a construction. Stereotypes simplify real people into a few exaggerated traits. While often negative, stereotypes can also serve as a shorthand; the danger lies in their repetition, which can reinforce prejudice.

Countertypes challenge and reverse stereotypes, offering a more diverse or subversive image. When you discuss representation, consider the following questions: Who is included or excluded? Who is shown as powerful or powerless? How are gender, race, age and class represented? Use specific examples from the text to support your arguments.

Representation also applies to places and issues. A news report might represent a city as dangerous, or an advert might represent a holiday destination as paradise. Always look for the selection and omission of details – what has the producer chosen to show or hide, and why?

8. Audience Classification and Targeting |

Every media text is created with an audience in mind. Producers use demographic categories (age, gender, income, education) and psychographic profiles (values, interests, lifestyle) to define and reach their target audience. The Young and Rubicam 4Cs model, for example, groups consumers into Mainstreamers, Aspirers, Succeeders and Reformers.

Audiences are not passive; they interpret texts based on their own experiences. Stuart Hall’s reception theory suggests that audiences may take a preferred reading (accepting the intended message), a negotiated reading (partly agreeing) or an oppositional reading (rejecting it). When writing about audience, always link the technical elements to how a specific group might respond.

Uses and gratifications theory (Blumler and Katz) proposes that audiences actively seek media to meet needs: information, personal identity, social interaction and entertainment. For example, a teenager might play a video game for both challenge (personal identity) and social connection (interaction). Refer to these needs to strengthen your analysis.

9. Media Institutions and Regulation |

Media texts are produced by organisations ranging from global conglomerates (e.g. Disney, BBC) to small independent studios. Ownership affects content: a company owned by a larger corporation may have access to bigger budgets but might face pressure to promote certain products or viewpoints. Public service broadcasters, like the BBC, have a remit to inform, educate and entertain, and are funded by the licence fee rather than advertising.

Regulation exists to set standards and protect audiences. In the UK, Ofcom oversees television, radio and video-on-demand services, ensuring content is not harmful or offensive. The BBFC classifies films by age rating, while the IPSO handles complaints about newspapers. When discussing institution, ask how the production context – funding, regulation and corporate interest – shaped the final text.

10. Genre and Hybridity |

Genre is a category of media text that shares certain conventions. Horror films use dark lighting, isolated settings and jump scares; news programmes feature a desk, a presenter and formal dress codes. Audiences develop expectations by recognising these patterns, and producers can either fulfil or subvert them.

Genre is not fixed; it evolves over time and often blends with others to create hybrids. A romantic comedy (rom-com) mixes love and humour, while a docudrama combines documentary and drama. Hybridity allows producers to attract wider audiences and offer fresh experiences. When analysing genre, identify the repertoire of elements – iconography, style, themes and narrative structures – that place the text in a particular category or hybrid.

11. New Media and Digital Convergence |

New media refers to digital, interactive and networked technologies, including websites, social media, streaming services and mobile apps. Unlike traditional broadcast media, new media often allows users to be both consumers and producers, a phenomenon called ‘prosumption’. This changes the relationship between institutions and audiences.

Digital convergence is the merging of previously separate technologies and industries. A smartphone, for example, combines a telephone, camera, music player and navigation device, all connected to the internet. This creates cross-media platforms where content is promoted across multiple channels. For your SQA portfolio, you might consider how a film is marketed through trailers, social media campaigns, merchandise and companion apps, all working together to engage audiences.

12. Exam Tips and Glossary |

When answering exam questions, always use the PEEL structure: Point, Evidence, Explanation and Link. Make a clear point, back it with a specific example from the text (describe a shot, a sound or a piece of dialogue), explain the effect it has on meaning or audience, and then link back to the question or a key concept. Avoid simply describing what you see; analysis is your goal.

Time management is crucial. Read the questions carefully, plan your response and allocate more time for higher-mark questions. Practise with past papers and create flashcards for the key terms below. A confident grasp of terminology will immediately raise the quality of your writing.
