1. What is Philosophy? |

Philosophy comes from the Greek words ‘philo’ (love) and ‘sophia’ (wisdom). It is the activity of asking fundamental questions about existence, knowledge, values, reason and language. Instead of relying on experiments, philosophers use logical reasoning and critical analysis to explore ideas that cannot be settled by science alone, such as ‘What is a good life?’ or ‘Do we have free will?’

In SQA Philosophy, you will learn to examine arguments, spot assumptions and develop your own reasoned views. The subject is divided into branches such as epistemology (theory of knowledge), ethics, philosophy of religion and philosophy of mind.

2. Logic and Arguments |

An argument in philosophy is not a quarrel. It consists of premises (reasons) that are supposed to lead to a conclusion. A good argument is one where the premises support the conclusion in a valid or strong way. We analyse arguments by identifying the premises and checking whether they are true and whether the structure works.

For example: ‘All humans are mortal. Socrates is a human. Therefore, Socrates is mortal.’ This is a classic valid argument where the conclusion follows necessarily from the premises. Philosophers regularly ask: ‘Are the premises justified? Is the logic tight?’

3. Deductive and Inductive Reasoning |

Deductive reasoning aims to provide conclusive proof. If the premises are true, the conclusion must be true. Arguments like the Socrates example are deductive. In symbols, a common pattern is:

P → Q, P, ∴ Q (Modus Ponens)

Inductive reasoning, on the other hand, offers probable support. It moves from specific observations to general conclusions, such as ‘The sun has always risen; therefore the sun will rise tomorrow.’ Inductive arguments are not guaranteed; they are strong or weak based on the evidence.

You must be able to tell whether an argument is deductive or inductive. In SQA exams, you may be asked to assess the strength of an inductive generalisation or the validity of a deductive form.

4. Fallacies in Reasoning |

A fallacy is a mistake in reasoning that weakens an argument. Common fallacies include ad hominem (attacking the person instead of the argument), straw man (misrepresenting a view to easily refute it) and false dilemma (presenting only two options when more exist).

Learning to spot fallacies helps you avoid being misled by poor reasoning. Always ask: ‘Is the criticism truly addressing the claim? Are there missing alternatives?’ Recognising fallacies is a core skill in Philosophy.

5. Epistemology: What is Knowledge? |

Epistemology studies what knowledge is and how we acquire it. The traditional definition states that knowledge is ‘justified true belief’ (JTB). For a person to know something, they must believe it, it must be true, and they must have justification (good reasons) for believing it.

However, the JTB account was challenged by Edmund Gettier, who produced cases where someone has a justified true belief but still seems not to know. These ‘Gettier cases’ show that knowledge may require something extra, such as a reliable connection to the truth.

Philosophers also discuss sources of knowledge: perception, memory, testimony and reasoning. Understanding these foundations prepares you for deeper debates.

6. Rationalism vs Empiricism |

Rationalists argue that reason is the primary source of knowledge. Descartes, a famous rationalist, believed we can gain certain knowledge through innate ideas and logical deduction. His famous saying ‘Cogito, ergo sum’ (I think, therefore I am) was meant to be an indubitable starting point.

Empiricists, such as John Locke and David Hume, hold that all knowledge comes from sensory experience. The mind at birth is a ‘tabula rasa’ (blank slate). We learn by seeing, hearing and touching, not through innate ideas. Hume even argued that causal connections are just habits of thought based on observed regularities.

You can compare these two schools using this table:

Rationalism Empiricism
Knowledge through reason and innate ideas Knowledge through sense experience
Descartes, Spinoza, Leibniz Locke, Berkeley, Hume
A priori knowledge possible (e.g. mathematics) All knowledge ultimately a posteriori

7. Ethics: Utilitarianism |

Utilitarianism is a consequentialist ethical theory, meaning it judges actions by their outcomes. The right action is the one that maximises overall happiness or pleasure and minimises pain. Jeremy Bentham proposed a ‘hedonic calculus’ to measure pleasure by intensity, duration, certainty and extent.

John Stuart Mill refined the theory by distinguishing higher pleasures (intellectual) from lower pleasures (bodily). He famously said, ‘It is better to be a human being dissatisfied than a pig satisfied.’ Utilitarianism asks you to consider the greatest good for the greatest number.

A common criticism is that utilitarianism can justify immoral acts if they produce good consequences, such as punishing an innocent person to please a mob. This shows the importance of also considering justice and rights.

8. Ethics: Deontology |

Deontology, associated with Immanuel Kant, argues that actions are right or wrong in themselves, regardless of consequences. Kant proposed the ‘Categorical Imperative’ as a universal moral law: ‘Act only according to that maxim whereby you can at the same time will that it should become a universal law.’

Another formulation is to treat humanity always as an end, never merely as a means. This prohibits using people solely for your own benefit. Unlike utilitarianism, deontology respects the inherent dignity of each person and forbids actions like lying or breaking promises even for a good outcome.

Kant believed that moral duties are known through reason, not feelings. A good will is the only thing good without qualification. When studying ethics, compare these two theories: one focuses on outcomes, the other on duties.

9. Philosophy of Religion: Design and Cosmological Arguments |

The design argument, or teleological argument, claims that the order and complexity of the universe point to an intelligent designer. William Paley used the analogy of a watch: if you find a watch on a heath, you infer a watchmaker due to its intricate parts working together for a purpose. Similarly, the complexity of nature, such as the human eye, suggests a divine designer.

David Hume criticised the argument by pointing out that the universe is not exactly like a machine and may have developed through chance or natural processes. The existence of imperfections and suffering also challenges the notion of a perfect designer.

The cosmological argument seeks a first cause or necessary being to explain why anything exists. Thomas Aquinas argued that everything in motion requires a mover, leading back to an unmoved First Mover (God). Another version states that every contingent being depends on something else, so there must be a necessary being grounding all existence.

10. Philosophy of Mind: Dualism and Physicalism |

Dualism is the view that the mind and the body are two distinct substances. Descartes argued that the mind is non‑physical and can exist without the body, while the body is a physical machine. This raises the ‘problem of interaction’: how can a non‑physical mind cause physical actions?

Physicalism, by contrast, claims that everything is physical or supervenes on the physical. Mental states are identical to brain states, or they are functional states that can be realised by physical systems. Gilbert Ryle criticised Cartesian dualism as the ‘ghost in the machine’ error, arguing that the mind is not a separate thing but a set of dispositions and behaviours.

These debates link closely to questions about personal identity and artificial intelligence. In SQA Philosophy, you learn to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of each position and to apply arguments such as the indivisibility of the mind or the explanatory power of neuroscience.
