Common Misconceptions and Corrections in Year 11 Cambridge Accounting | Year 11 Cambridge

📚 Common Misconceptions and Corrections in Year 11 Cambridge Accounting | Year 11 Cambridge

In Year 11 Cambridge Accounting, students often develop fundamental misunderstandings that lead to persistent errors in financial statements, ratio analysis, and transaction recording. This article identifies the most common misconceptions and provides clear, syllabus-aligned corrections to help learners build accurate accounting habits, avoid lost marks, and gain confidence for the IGCSE or O Level examination.

1. Confusing Debit and Credit Rules Across Account Types |

A widespread misunderstanding is to treat all accounts as if they follow the same debit-credit logic. Many learners know that “assets increase on the debit side” but then mistakenly credit expense accounts when payments are made, or debit income when a sale occurs.

The correction lies in the accounting equation: Assets + Expenses + Drawings = Liabilities + Capital + Revenue. Everything on the left side (assets, expenses, drawings) increases with a debit and decreases with a credit. Everything on the right side (liabilities, capital, revenue) increases with a credit and decreases with a debit. A simple mnemonic used in Cambridge courses is DEAD CLIC: Debit Expenses, Assets, Drawings; Credit Liabilities, Income, Capital.

Account Type Increase Entry Decrease Entry Normal Balance
Assets Debit Credit Debit
Expenses Debit Credit Debit
Drawings Debit Credit Debit
Liabilities Credit Debit Credit
Capital Credit Debit Credit
Revenue Credit Debit Credit

Memorising this pattern helps eliminate the common mistake of treating a cash purchase as “credit cash, debit purchases” without understanding why purchases (an expense) is debited.

2. Treating Capital Expenditure as Revenue Expenditure |

Students frequently charge the full cost of a non-current asset directly to the income statement as an expense in the year of purchase, or conversely, capitalise routine repair costs to the asset account. Both errors distort profit and the statement of financial position.

Capital expenditure buys, improves or extends the life of a non-current asset and is recorded by increasing the asset account. The cost is then spread over its useful life through depreciation. Revenue expenditure covers day-to-day running costs, such as repairs, fuel and stationery, and is written off immediately in the income statement. The correction is to ask: will this spending bring future economic benefits beyond the current year? If yes, it is likely capital expenditure.

  • Correct treatment: purchase of delivery van → Debit Van (non-current asset), Credit Bank.
  • Incorrect treatment: Debit Vehicle Expenses, Credit Bank → overstates expenses, understates profit.

3. Depreciation Calculation Mistakes |

Errors in depreciation arise when students ignore residual value in the straight-line formula or incorrectly deduct residual value when using the reducing balance method. Another common slip is charging a full year’s depreciation for an asset bought part-way through the year without pro-rating.

For the straight-line method, the correct formula is:

Annual depreciation charge = (Cost − Residual value) ÷ Useful life (years)

For the reducing balance method, the charge is calculated as net book value × fixed percentage. No residual value is deducted in advance; however, the asset must not be depreciated below its residual value. In exam questions, the percentage is usually given. If an asset is held for only part of the year, depreciation must be apportioned on a monthly basis.

Common Error Correction
Depreciating land along with buildings Land is normally not depreciated (infinite useful life). Only buildings are depreciated.
Continuing to depreciate after net book value reaches zero Stop when carrying amount equals residual value.
Including residual value in the reducing balance calculation Do not subtract residual value initially; only ensure the final allowance does not push carrying amount below residual value.

4. Bad Debts and the Provision for Doubtful Debts |

A frequent misconception is that the provision for doubtful debts is an additional bank account or that writing off a bad debt automatically adjusts the provision. In reality, the two are separate adjustments.

A bad debt is a specific customer account that has become irrecoverable. The entry is to debit Bad Debts (an expense) and credit the Trade Receivable account. The provision for doubtful debts is an estimate of receivables that may not be collected. The year-end adjustment is the movement in provision: compare the required provision (e.g. 5% of remaining trade receivables) with the existing provision balance. The difference is the charge or credit to the income statement.

  • Raising provision for the first time: Debit Income Statement, Credit Provision for Doubtful Debts.
  • Increasing provision: Debit Income Statement with the increase only.
  • Decreasing provision: Credit Income Statement with the decrease.
  • Recovery of a previously written-off bad debt: Debit Trade Receivable, Credit Bad Debts Recovered; then Debit Bank, Credit Trade Receivable.

5. Bank Reconciliation Misconceptions |

Students often assume the bank statement balance is the “true” figure and adjust the cash book to match it without considering timing differences or bank errors. Others reverse the addition and subtraction of unpresented cheques and outstanding deposits, leading to an incorrect adjusted balance.

A bank reconciliation starts with the bank statement balance. Add deposits not yet credited by the bank, deduct unpresented cheques, and adjust for any bank errors (e.g. an incorrect charge). The resulting figure must equal the adjusted cash book balance, which itself has been corrected for items such as bank charges, standing orders, and direct credits discovered only from the bank statement.

A simple format to remember:

Bank statement balance + Uncredited deposits − Unpresented cheques ± Bank errors = Adjusted bank balance

6. Control Account Reconciliations |

Many learners believe that the balance on the sales ledger control account must always agree with the total of the individual trade receivable balances. When differences exist, they guess at the cause rather than systematically reconciling.

Differences arise from one-sided entries, casting errors, transposition errors, or omission of opening balances. The correction involves preparing a statement reconciling the control account balance with the list of individual balances. Adjust the control account for items such as interest charged on overdue accounts, bad debts written off, or contra entries (set-offs). Adjust the list of receivables for mistakes in individual accounts.

A corrected process:

  1. Update the control account for any omitted entries (e.g. direct payment from customer).
  2. Re-add the individual ledger balances.
  3. Investigate and correct errors in individual accounts.
  4. If differences persist, trace each transaction from prime books to the ledgers.

7. Incorrect Layout of Financial Statements |

Examination scripts frequently show mixed-up classifications: putting a non-current liability in current liabilities, placing closing inventory in the trial balance columns without adjustment, or including drawings as an expense in the income statement.

The income statement for a sole trader must clearly show revenue, cost of sales (opening inventory + purchases − closing inventory), gross profit, other income, expenses, and net profit. The statement of financial position should be arranged with non-current assets first, then current assets, deduct current liabilities to show working capital, then non-current liabilities, and finally capital (opening capital + net profit − drawings). Drawings are never an expense.

Misconception Correct Presentation
Closing inventory shown only in trial balance Deduct from cost of sales in income statement; show as current asset in SFP.
Overdraft listed as a current asset Bank overdraft is a current liability.
Loan interest paid shown under finance costs but loan itself in capital Loan capital is a non-current (or current) liability, not part of owner’s capital.

8. Errors in Inventory Valuation |

Some students value closing inventory at selling price, or at cost regardless of whether the net realisable value (NRV) has fallen below cost. This inflates profit and overstates current assets.

Under IAS 2, inventory must be measured at the lower of cost and net realisable value. Cost includes all expenditure incurred in bringing the items to their present location and condition (e.g. carriage inwards). NRV is the estimated selling price less any costs to complete and sell. When NRV is lower, write down the inventory and charge the loss to the income statement.

Valuation per unit = Lower of (Cost per unit, NRV per unit)

每单位计价 = min(单位成本, 单位可变现净值)

Common error: including selling expenses in the cost of inventory. Correction: selling expenses belong to the period, not to inventory cost.

9. Mishandling Accruals and Prepayments |

Year-end adjustments for accruals and prepayments are a regular source of error. Students may record the entire cash payment as an expense without carrying forward the prepaid portion, or forget to accrue an expense that has been incurred but not yet billed.

An accrual recognises an expense that belongs to the current period but has not been paid. The double entry is: Debit Expense, Credit Accruals (a current liability). A prepayment is an amount paid in advance that relates to a future period: Debit Prepayments (current asset), Credit Expense. At the start of the next period, reverse the opening accrual/prepayment so that the upcoming cash payment or expense can be recorded normally.

Worked example correction: A business pays insurance £1,200 on 1 April for 12 months, year-end 30 June. Prepayment = £1,200 × 9/12 = £900. Income statement charge = £300. Record: Debit Insurance £300, Debit Prepaid Insurance £900, Credit Bank £1,200.

10. Trade Discount versus Cash Discount |

A very common examination trap is confusing trade discount with cash discount. Some candidates deduct a trade discount after recording the invoice, or record a cash discount as a deduction from purchases at the point of sale.

Trade discount is a reduction in the list price given at the point of sale, often for bulk buying. It is never recorded in the accounting books; the invoice is prepared net of trade discount, and only the net figure enters the accounts. Cash discount is an incentive for early payment. It is only recorded when cash is received or paid within the discount period. Discount allowed (to customers) is an expense; discount received (from suppliers) is income.

Transaction Correct Records
Invoice: £800 less 10% trade discount Purchases (or Sales) recorded at £720. Trade discount £80 not entered.
Customer pays within 30 days, 5% cash discount on £720 Debit Bank £684, Debit Discount Allowed £36, Credit Trade Receivable £720.
Business pays supplier, receives 3% cash discount Debit Trade Payable, Credit Bank, Credit Discount Received.
