📚 Common Misconceptions in Year 11 Cambridge Philosophy and How to Correct Them | 剑桥Year 11哲学常见误区与纠正方法

Many students beginning Cambridge IGCSE or O Level Philosophy come with assumptions that philosophy is just a matter of personal opinion, that famous arguments are obviously right, or that technical terms mean what they do in everyday language. These assumptions quickly turn into stumbling blocks. Misconceptions can make a good essay fall flat, because examiners look for precise use of concepts and careful evaluation of arguments. This article identifies ten especially common errors among Year 11 learners and explains, step by step, how to replace them with accurate philosophical thinking. By working through these corrections, you will build a stronger foundation for all four strands of the syllabus: epistemology, ethics, philosophy of religion, and metaphysics.

1. Philosophy as Mere Opinion |

One of the most persistent misconceptions is that philosophy is simply about stating personal opinions, where every view is equally valid as long as it is ‘your truth’. Students often write sentences like ‘I feel that utilitarianism is wrong’ without providing any reasoning, thinking that a feeling is enough to make a philosophical point.

In philosophy, an opinion must be supported by reasons. The discipline is argument-centred. Even when you reject a philosopher’s conclusion, you must show where their premises fail, what counterexample weakens their claim, or which inconsistency emerges. The examiner assesses not whether your conclusion is ‘right’ in some absolute sense, but how well you construct, explain and evaluate arguments. To correct this misconception, treat every claim in your essay as a mini-argument: state it, give a reason, illustrate with an example, and consider a possible objection.

2. Knowledge as Absolute Certainty |

A typical Year 11 answer will define knowledge as ‘something you are completely sure of and which cannot possibly be wrong’. This confuses knowledge with infallibility. It also makes the Gettier problem and even everyday knowledge impossible to discuss.

The standard philosophical starting point, which the Cambridge syllabus expects you to know, is the tripartite definition: knowledge is justified true belief. In symbols often used in class,

Knowledge = Justified True Belief (JTB)

The ‘justified’ part matters most. You can have a true belief by luck, but it does not count as knowledge unless you have good reasons. Moreover, contemporary epistemology recognises fallibilism: our justifications rarely guarantee truth with absolute certainty, yet they can still be strong enough for knowledge. So, instead of saying ‘I know X means X cannot be false’, say ‘I know X means I have true belief in X and adequate justification’.

3. Validity Implies True Conclusion |

A very common slip is to write ‘This argument is valid, so its conclusion must be true.’ In logic, ‘valid’ has a precise technical meaning. A valid argument is one where if the premises are true, the conclusion must be true. It says nothing about whether the premises are actually true.

Consider the following valid argument that has a false conclusion because its premises are false:

English 中文
Premise 1: All cats are dogs.
Premise 2: All dogs are reptiles.
Conclusion: Therefore, all cats are reptiles.

To correct the confusion, always separate the question of validity (‘Does the conclusion follow from the premises?’) from the question of soundness (‘Are the premises actually true?’). A sound argument is a valid argument with true premises, and only a sound argument guarantees a true conclusion.

4. Utilitarianism Justifies Sacrificing the Minority |

Students frequently caricature utilitarianism by claiming it automatically requires us to sacrifice one innocent person to save five. While some act-utilitarian calculations could yield that outcome, the theory is more nuanced. Even Bentham and Mill were aware of justice concerns.

Mill explicitly argued that secondary principles, such as respecting rights and keeping promises, are essential to promoting the general happiness in the long run. Rule-utilitarianism, which is a legitimate variant discussed in Year 11 courses, evaluates rules rather than individual acts: a rule permitting constant sacrifice of minorities would undermine trust and stability, thus failing the utility test. Therefore, the misconception is corrected by distinguishing between different forms of utilitarianism and by recognising that the theory is not a crude arithmetic of pleasure versus pain. Always ask: ‘Which rule, if generally followed, would maximise overall well-being?’

5. Berkeley’s Idealism Denies Physical Objects |

Many learners read Berkeley’s esse est percipi (‘to be is to be perceived’) and conclude that he thinks tables and chairs vanish when nobody looks at them. This misunderstanding arises from overlooking his appeal to God as the permanent perceiver.

Berkeley was not saying ordinary objects do not exist; he was challenging the philosophical notion of material substance existing independently of any mind. In his view, physical objects are collections of ideas that exist in minds. When no human perceives a tree, God’s infinite mind continues to perceive it, so the tree remains real. Correcting this misconception requires you to distinguish between denying material substance and denying ordinary objects. You should write: ‘According to Berkeley, objects are mind-dependent bundles of sensible qualities, not mind-independent chunks of matter, but they do not blink out of existence because God’s perception is constant.’

6. ‘I Think, Therefore I Am’ Proves Everything | “我思故我在”证明一切

Descartes’ cogito ergo sum is often treated as if it instantly grounds all knowledge. In essays, students sometimes claim that because Descartes proved his own existence, he also proved the external world, God, and the reliability of the senses in one stroke. This skips the careful steps of the Meditations.

The cogito establishes only the existence of the thinker as a thinking thing. Descartes still has to climb out of solipsism. He needs the Trademark Argument and the Ontological Argument to prove God’s existence, and then uses God’s non-deceitful nature to guarantee that clear and distinct perceptions are true. Only at that point can he trust his senses about an external world. The correct approach is to treat the cogito as the first foundational certainty, not the whole building. Mention the Cartesian Circle and the role of God as a guarantor of truth to show deeper understanding.

7. Moral Relativism Means All Views Are Equally Right | 道德相对主义意味着所有观点同样正确

After learning that different cultures have different moral codes, students often jump to the conclusion that no moral view is better than any other. They conflate descriptive relativism (the observation that moral beliefs vary) with normative relativism (the claim that all moral beliefs are equally valid).

Descriptive relativism is widely accepted and simply reports variation. Normative relativism, however, is a substantive philosophical position that requires argument. If it were true, we could not condemn even the most harmful practices, and the concept of moral progress would be meaningless. To correct the confusion, you should distinguish clearly between these two levels. Also, note that philosophers from Kant to contemporary defenders of universal human rights argue that shared human interests ground cross-cultural moral standards. Therefore, when writing about relativism, never stop at observation; evaluate whether variation alone logically forces us to accept that anything goes.

8. The Design Argument Proves God’s Existence |

The teleological argument, especially Paley’s watchmaker analogy, is often summarised by students as ‘the world looks designed, so God must exist’. However, an analogical argument does not deliver deductive proof; it is an inductive argument that makes God’s existence probable, not certain.

Hume’s criticisms, delivered before Darwin, already showed the limits of the design inference: the universe is a unique case, not like a watch; even if a designer is inferred, it does not give us the perfect, infinite God of classical theism; and the existence of evil and imperfection suggests a flawed designer, or a team of designers. Darwin’s theory of evolution by natural selection later offered a non-intentional mechanism that explains apparent design in biological organisms. To correct the misconception, present the design argument as a reasonable but defeasible argument, not a logical knockout. Use Hume’s critiques and the Darwinian alternative to show how to evaluate its strength fairly.

9. Philosophy Is Just Word Games |

A frustrating complaint in the classroom is that philosophers merely argue about definitions without reaching any real conclusions. This misconception assumes that clarifying terms is trivial wordplay rather than the essential groundwork for tackling substantive problems.

Consider the free will debate. If we do not first define what we mean by ‘free’, we cannot even state what is at stake. Conceptual analysis is a tool, not the end goal. In the philosophy of mind, distinguishing between ‘identity’ and ‘supervenience’ is crucial for evaluating whether mental states can be reduced to brain states. In ethics, clarifying the concept of ‘good’ informs real-world dilemmas such as resource allocation in healthcare. The correction is to see philosophy’s linguistic precision as analogous to a scientist calibrating an instrument: it enables us to ask sharper questions and test answers rigorously. Whenever you feel tempted to dismiss a discussion as ‘just semantics’, ask yourself whether the definitions in play change the moral, epistemological or metaphysical outcome.

10. Free Will and Determinism Are Incompatible |

Students often draw a rigid dichotomy: if the universe is deterministic, we cannot have free will, so we must either reject determinism or accept that we are robots. This position, known as hard incompatibilism, is only one viewpoint in the debate. Many philosophers hold that free will and determinism are compatible.

Compatibilists like Hume and Frankfurt argue that free will should not be defined as the ability to do otherwise in exactly the same circumstances, but as the ability to act according to your own desires and intentions without external coercion. Under this definition, a determined action can still be free if it flows from your own character and choices. The Cambridge syllabus expects you to know this distinction. When writing about freedom, you should compare incompatibilist and compatibilist definitions, and test them against thought experiments like Frankfurt-style cases. This approach corrects the misconception by showing that the relationship between causation and freedom depends on how we define the key terms.
