1. The Design Argument |

The Design Argument, also known as the Teleological Argument, claims that the complexity and apparent purpose in the natural world point to the existence of a designer — God. William Paley used the analogy of a watch: if you found a watch on a heath, its intricate mechanism would lead you to infer a watchmaker, even if you had never seen one. Similarly, the eye, the wings of a bird, or the order of the planets suggest an intelligent designer. Isaac Newton also argued that the thumb alone was evidence of design. David Hume criticised the argument by pointing out that the universe is not like a machine because it is unique and we cannot compare it to other universes. He also argued that even if there is a designer, it does not have to be the God of Christianity — it could be a team of gods or an apprentice deity. John Stuart Mill highlighted the presence of natural evils such as earthquakes and disease, questioning the design claim. Modern versions of the argument refer to the fine-tuning of physical constants, which seem precisely set to allow life. However, critics suggest the multiverse hypothesis as an alternative explanation.

2. The First Cause Argument |

The First Cause Argument, or Cosmological Argument, seeks to prove God’s existence from the fact that the universe exists and must have a cause. Thomas Aquinas proposed three ways of this kind: the Argument from Motion, the Argument from Causation, and the Argument from Contingency. The Argument from Causation states that everything we observe has a cause, but this chain of causes cannot go back infinitely; there must be a first uncaused cause, which is God. The Argument from Contingency says that everything in the world depends on something else for its existence; therefore there must be a necessary being that does not depend on anything — God. David Hume questioned why the universe as a whole needs a cause, and Bertrand Russell argued that the universe might be a ‘brute fact’ with no further explanation. The Big Bang theory is sometimes used both to support and to challenge the argument: it suggests a beginning, but science may provide an explanation without God. Another key criticism is that even if a first cause exists, it does not mean that cause is the personal, loving God of theism.

3. The Moral Argument |

The Moral Argument for God’s existence is based on the human sense of right and wrong. Immanuel Kant argued that we all feel a sense of moral obligation, and for morality to make sense, there must be ultimate justice — a summum bonum where happiness and virtue come together. This requires God to guarantee it. Cardinal Newman suggested that the voice of conscience is the voice of God within us. More recently, C.S. Lewis argued that the universal moral law shared across cultures points to a moral lawgiver. The argument can be summarised as: if objective moral values exist, then God exists; objective moral values do exist; therefore God exists. Critics, however, point to the Euthyphro dilemma: is something good because God commands it, or does God command it because it is good? If the former, morality seems arbitrary; if the latter, morality exists independently of God. Sociobiologists and evolutionary psychologists explain morality as a product of evolution and social conditioning, undermining the need for a divine source. Atheist philosophers argue that morality can be based on human wellbeing and empathy without a supernatural foundation.

4. The Problem of Evil |

The problem of evil is perhaps the strongest argument against the existence of an all-loving, all-powerful God. If God is omnipotent, he could prevent evil; if he is omnibenevolent, he would want to; yet evil exists. The logical problem of evil, articulated by J.L. Mackie, argues that the coexistence of God and evil is logically impossible. The evidential problem, presented by William Rowe, points to the sheer quantity and distribution of suffering as strong evidence against God. Theodicies attempt to justify God’s permission of evil. Augustine’s theodicy held that evil is a privation of good, not a substance, and entered the world through the misuse of free will by angels and humans. However, this does not explain natural evil and relies on a literal interpretation of the Fall. Irenaeus’ theodicy, developed by John Hick, sees the world as a ‘vale of soul-making’: suffering helps humans grow and develop virtues. This theodicy is questioned because some suffering seems pointless and excessive for character-building. Process theology offers a different solution: God is not all-powerful but works persuasively within creation. The free will defence remains popular, but it does not account for natural disasters or animal suffering.

5. Religious Experience |

Religious experiences are direct, personal encounters with the divine or transcendent. William James identified four characteristics of mystical experiences: ineffability (hard to describe in words), noetic quality (insight and knowledge), transiency (brief duration), and passivity (the person feels taken over by a higher power). Swinburne categorised religious experiences into five types: ordinary public experiences (e.g. seeing God in a sunset), extraordinary public experiences (e.g. the resurrection appearances), private describable experiences (e.g. a dream or vision), private non-describable experiences (mystical), and corporate experiences (shared by a group, such as the Toronto Blessing). Rudolf Otto described the numinous experience as a sense of awe and fascination in the presence of a wholly other reality. These experiences are used as evidence for God: if someone genuinely seems to experience God, it is reasonable to believe that God exists, unless there are strong defeaters. Critics, however, argue that religious experiences are simply the product of brain chemistry, psychological suggestion, or mental illness. The diversity of religious experiences across different traditions also challenges the claim that any one interpretation is true.

6. Miracles |

A miracle is usually defined as a remarkable event that appears to violate the laws of nature and is believed to be caused by God. David Hume’s definition of a miracle as ‘a transgression of a law of nature by a particular volition of the Deity’ is widely used. Hume argued that it is never rational to believe in miracles because the evidence for the laws of nature is always stronger than the testimony for a miracle. He also noted that miracle stories often come from ignorant, barbarous nations and that different religions claim miracles, so they cancel each other out. Richard Swinburne defended miracles by arguing that if God exists, it is not improbable that he might occasionally intervene in his creation. He also pointed out that natural laws are based on past experiences, but they do not rule out unusual events. The Ganges-Kahn lecture example illustrates how a well-attested public miracle could be reasonable to believe. The resurrection of Jesus is the central miracle of Christianity: believers see it as a historical event with multiple witnesses, while critics suggest explanations such as hallucination, myth development, or stolen body theories. The concept of miracle is also challenged by modern science and by the problem of unanswered prayers for healing.

7. Death and the Afterlife |

Philosophers and theologians have long debated what, if anything, survives death. Dualism, based on Plato and Descartes, holds that the soul is a non-physical substance that can exist independently of the body. At death, the soul is released and may be reincarnated or go to an afterlife. Monism, or materialism, argues that humans are purely physical beings, so death is the end of personal existence. John Hick’s replica theory suggests that God can recreate an exact replica of a person in a resurrection world, preserving personal identity through divine memory and power. The concept of resurrection is central to Christianity, where believers expect a bodily resurrection like that of Jesus. Near-death experiences (NDEs) are often cited as evidence, with common features such as a tunnel, a bright light, and a life review. Critics explain NDEs through oxygen deprivation, drugs, or psychological expectation. The problem of personal identity over time (the ship of Theseus) raises questions about whether a resurrected person would truly be the same individual. Different religions offer varied pictures of the afterlife: heaven and hell in Christianity and Islam, reincarnation in Hinduism and Buddhism, and a spiritual realm in many indigenous traditions. The ethical implications of belief in an afterlife include moral accountability and the hope of justice for unpunished evil.

8. Revelation | 启示

Revelation is the way in which God makes himself known to human beings. General revelation refers to God being known through nature, conscience, and human reason, available to all people. Romans 1:20 says that God’s invisible qualities are clearly seen in creation. Special revelation is God making himself known through specific events or communications, such as scripture, prophets, and supremely through Jesus Christ in Christianity. The Bible is considered by many Christians as the inspired word of God, although views differ on whether it is literally inerrant or contains theological truths in human words. Propositional revelation holds that God reveals direct truths or doctrines, while non-propositional revelation suggests that God reveals himself personally rather than as a set of facts. Prophets like Abraham, Moses, and Muhammad are vehicles of special revelation in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. The challenge of revelation lies in the diversity and apparent contradictions among claimed revelations. The problem of interpretation also arises: sacred texts require human reading and cultural understanding, which can lead to different doctrines. Philosophers question how a finite mind can grasp an infinite God and whether a loving God would make salvation dependent on access to special revelation. Progressive revelation is the idea that God’s self-disclosure developed gradually over biblical history, reaching its fullness in Christ.

9. The Nature of God |

In the philosophy of religion, the concept of God raises important questions about the divine attributes. Traditionally, God is described as omnipotent (all-powerful), omniscient (all-knowing), omnibenevolent (all-loving), eternal, and transcendent. The paradox of the stone challenges omnipotence: can God create a stone so heavy that he cannot lift it? If yes, there is a task he cannot do (lift the stone); if no, there is something he cannot create. Philosophers respond by qualifying omnipotence as the ability to do anything logically possible. Omniscience raises the problem of free will: if God knows the future, human freedom may be an illusion. Some theologians propose that God’s knowledge is timeless and does not force future events. The attribute of omnibenevolence is questioned by the existence of hell and the problem of evil. Eternity is understood either as everlastingness (existing at all times) or timelessness (existing outside time altogether). The idea of a personal God who can be related to in prayer is central to theism, while in deism God is a distant creator who does not intervene. The transcendent-immanent balance shapes how believers experience God: both awe-inspiring and intimately near. Feminist theology and process theology have offered alternative models of divine power based on relationship and love rather than domination.

10. Faith and Reason |

The relationship between faith and reason has been a central topic in philosophy. Some thinkers, like Søren Kierkegaard, argued that faith requires a ‘leap’ beyond rational evidence; religious truth is subjective and cannot be demonstrated. This is called fideism. Others, like Thomas Aquinas, held that reason and faith are complementary: reason can demonstrate certain preambles of faith (e.g. that God exists) while the doctrines of the Trinity or the Incarnation are known only through revelation. The evidentialist challenge, from thinkers such as W.K. Clifford, insists that it is wrong always, everywhere, and for anyone to believe anything upon insufficient evidence. William James responded in ‘The Will to Believe’ that in certain situations where a decision is forced, living, and momentous, we may choose to believe even without complete evidence. Pascal’s Wager is a pragmatic argument: if you believe in God and he exists, you gain infinite happiness; if he does not, you lose little. If you do not believe and God exists, you may face infinite loss. Critics note the wager limits God to one possible deity and reduces faith to a mere bet. Many contemporary philosophers argue that religious belief can be properly basic, like belief in other minds, and does not require prior argument. The cognitive science of religion suggests that humans have a natural tendency toward religious belief, but this does not settle the question of truth.

来自 W.K.
