In the Eduqas GCSE Music specification, the Appraising paper (Component 3) accounts for 40% of the final grade. It tests your ability to listen critically, identify musical features, and express your understanding through both short-answer questions and an extended response on set works. While the exam is written, honing your aural skills through oral practice is a powerful revision technique. Describing music aloud reinforces the language of analysis, builds confidence, and cements knowledge in a way silent study cannot.

1. Appraising Exam Structure | 听力鉴赏考试结构

Appraising is split into Section A and Section B. Section A has eight compulsory questions based on unfamiliar extracts. These test your ability to identify instruments, dynamics, articulation, tempo, metre, rhythm, pitch, melody, harmony, tonality, texture and structure. Some questions ask you to complete a melody or rhythm dictation, requiring precise aural recognition.

Build a habit of listening to music actively. Instead of simply playing music in the background, sit down with a piece of unfamiliar music, close your eyes, and ask yourself: What instruments do I hear? What is the texture at this moment? How would I describe the tempo? Is the tonality major or minor? Pause the track and say your observations aloud.
