It revisits essential foundation topics and introduces you to the key concepts you will explore in the coming year, helping you build confidence and fluency before the busy exam season.
1. Why Study Statistics? |
In a world dominated by information, statistical literacy empowers you to critically evaluate claims, spot misleading graphs and make better personal and professional choices. From medical trials to sports analytics, statistical thinking is everywhere.
As a GCSE Statistics student, you will learn to handle real data, use technology and communicate findings clearly. This course builds a skill set valued by universities and employers in fields such as science, finance, marketing and social research.
2. Types of Data |
Data can be classified as qualitative (non-numerical, e.g. eye colour, type of car) or quantitative (numerical). Quantitative data is further split into discrete (countable, e.g. number of siblings) and continuous (measurable, e.g. height, time).
| Qualitative | Favourite genre, postcode area |
| Quantitative discrete | Number of goals, shoe size |
| Quantitative continuous | Mass, temperature, distance |
Choosing appropriate diagrams and calculations depends on the data type. For example, a pie chart can show qualitative proportions, while a histogram is used for continuous data after grouping.
3. Collecting Data: Sampling Methods |
A population includes every member of the group we want to study. A census collects data from the entire population, while a sample surveys only part of it. Sampling saves time and money, but we must manage bias to obtain reliable results.
Common methods: simple random sampling (every member equally likely), stratified sampling (proportional to subgroups), systematic sampling (every nth item), quota sampling (non-random, fixed numbers per category) and convenience sampling (selecting those easily available).
AQA questions often ask you to identify and critique the sampling method used, so learn the strengths and weaknesses of each.
4. Presenting Data |
Once data is collected we need to display it clearly. Frequency tables organise raw counts. For grouped continuous data, histograms use area to represent frequency, with frequency density = frequency ÷ class width.
Other key diagrams: bar charts for categorical or discrete data, pie charts for proportions, cumulative frequency curves to find medians and quartiles, and box plots to compare distributions.
Always label axes, use a suitable scale and provide a title. When drawing histograms, plot frequency density on the vertical axis – a common exam pitfall.
5. Averages: Mean, Median and Mode |
An average summarises the centre of a dataset. The mode is the most frequent value, the median is the middle value when sorted, and the mean (x̄) is the sum of values divided by the count.
Mean: x̄ = Σx ÷ n
For grouped data, we estimate the mean using midpoints:
Estimated mean = Σ(f × midpoint) ÷ Σf
The mean uses all values but is affected by outliers; the median is resistant to extreme values. Always choose the most appropriate average for the context.
6. Measures of Spread: Range, IQR and Standard Deviation |
The range = highest value – lowest value. It is simple but heavily influenced by a single outlier. The interquartile range (IQR) = Q₃ – Q₁, measuring the spread of the middle 50% of the data.
A more sophisticated measure is standard deviation, which quantifies the average distance of each point from the mean. The sample standard deviation formula is:
s = √[ Σ(x – x̄)² ÷ (n – 1) ]
On the AQA specification, you will calculate standard deviation for both ungrouped and grouped data. A larger standard deviation indicates greater variability.
7. Probability Fundamentals |
Probability measures how likely an event is to happen, ranging from 0 (impossible) to 1 (certain). For equally likely outcomes, P(event) = number of favourable outcomes ÷ total number of outcomes.
Events can be mutually exclusive (cannot happen together) or independent (the occurrence of one does not affect the other). For independent events A and B, P(A and B) = P(A) × P(B).
对于独立事件 A 和 B,P(A 且 B) = P(A) × P(B)。
Tree diagrams help organise probabilities for sequential events. Conditional probability P(A|B) is the probability of A given B has occurred; you will meet both two-way tables and Venn diagrams to calculate this.
8. Scatter Graphs and Correlation |
A scatter graph visualises the relationship between two variables. Correlation describes the strength and direction: positive correlation means both increase together, negative correlation means one increases while the other decreases, and no correlation shows no clear pattern.
We can draw a line of best fit passing through the mean point (x̄, ȳ). This line is used to estimate values: interpolation within the data range is reliable, but extrapolation outside the range can be misleading.
Remember that correlation does not imply causation – a third factor may influence both variables.
9. Time Series Analysis |
A time series records data at regular time intervals (e.g. monthly sales). It often contains a trend (long-term movement) and seasonal variation (regular pattern within a year). Moving averages smooth out fluctuations to reveal the underlying trend.
For a 3-point moving average, the first term is (x₁ + x₂ + x₃) ÷ 3, then (x₂ + x₃ + x₄) ÷ 3, and so on. Plot the moving averages against the central time point to visualise the trend.
You may also be asked to calculate seasonal variation and use a trend line to make forecasts.
10. The Statistical Enquiry Cycle (PPDAC) | 统计调查循环(PPDAC)
Every statistical investigation follows a cycle: Problem (pose a question), Plan (decide what data to collect and how), Data (collect and clean), Analysis (calculate averages, draw graphs) and Conclusion (interpret findings, discuss limitations).
A well-planned investigation considers ethical issues, sample size and data protection. In your exam, you will critique the design of studies and suggest improvements.
11. Index Numbers | 指数
An index number compares a quantity’s value at different times. The base period is given the value 100. A simple price index is calculated as:
Price index = (current price ÷ base period price) × 100
Weighted index numbers, such as the Retail Price Index (RPI), give more importance to items that we spend more on. The weighted mean uses the formula:
Weighted index = Σ(weight × price relative) ÷ Σweight
Index numbers are common in economic statistics and form an important part of the AQA GCSE Statistics course.
