1. Propp’s Character Types |

Vladimir Propp analysed hundreds of Russian folk tales and discovered that all narratives share a set of seven recurring character archetypes, which can be used to describe the function of any character in a media text. These are The Hero (the central figure on a quest), The Villain (opposes the Hero), The Donor (gives the Hero a magical object or help), The Helper (assists the Hero throughout), The Princess (the reward sought by the Hero), The Dispatcher (sends the Hero on the mission), and The False Hero (appears good but is ultimately exposed). Applying Propp’s model helps identify how a narrative constructs character roles to engage audiences.

2. Todorov’s Narrative Structure |

Tzvetan Todorov proposed that most narratives follow a three- or five-stage structure moving from one equilibrium to another. The simplified version includes Equilibrium (a state of balance and order), Disruption (an event that disturbs the equilibrium, often caused by the villain), Recognition (the characters realise the disruption), Attempt to Repair (the Hero takes action to restore order), and New Equilibrium (order is restored, but the world is changed). This formula is especially effective for analysing the plot of films, television dramas, and video game narratives.

3. Barthes’ Semiotic Codes |

Roland Barthes argued that texts are woven from five codes that generate meaning. The two most commonly used in GCSE analysis are the Enigma Code and the Action Code. The Enigma Code refers to any element that sets up a question or mystery for the audience, hooking them into the narrative (e.g., a locked box, an unanswered text message). The Action Code suggests further narrative action will follow; a gun in a drawer implies it will later be fired. Additional codes include the Symbolic, Semantic, and Cultural codes, but focusing on Enigma and Action will sufficiently demonstrate knowledge of media language and narrative construction.

4. Levi-Strauss and Binary Oppositions |

Claude Levi-Strauss introduced the idea that meaning in narratives is often constructed through pairs of opposing concepts called binary oppositions. Common examples include good vs evil, young vs old, light vs dark, male vs female, and civilisation vs wilderness. By identifying which side of the opposition is presented as dominant, you can uncover the ideological values of the text. In a crime drama, for instance, the opposition between the honest detective and the corrupt businessman reinforces the producer’s message about justice. Always link the opposition to how it shapes audience sympathy and understanding.

5. Neale’s Genre Theory |

Steve Neale argues that genres are not fixed but are constantly evolving through repetition and difference. A media product must include enough familiar generic conventions (iconography, settings, character types) to be recognised by audiences, yet it must also introduce some novel variation to remain appealing. This is why film trailers might declare ‘this time, the rules have changed’. In exam responses, use Neale’s theory to discuss how a set product both follows and subverts its genre to attract a target audience, and consider how genre hybridisation (e.g., romantic comedy or science-fiction horror) supports this balance.

6. Uses and Gratifications Model |

Blumler and Katz developed the Uses and Gratifications theory, which shifts the question from ‘what do media do to people?’ to ‘what do people do with media?’. Audiences actively select media to fulfil four main needs: Information (seeking knowledge, surveillance of events), Personal Identity (finding models of behaviour, reinforcing values), Integration and Social Interaction (connecting with others, parasocial relationships), and Entertainment (escapism, relaxation, emotional release). When analysing any set product, identify which gratification is most clearly offered and how the product’s design, narrative, or interactivity fulfils that need for its audience.

7. Hall’s Encoding/Decoding Model |

Stuart Hall proposed that media producers encode preferred meanings into texts, but audiences do not simply accept them passively. Instead, they decode messages depending on their own cultural background and experiences. Audiences can take a Preferred Reading (fully accepting the intended meaning), a Negotiated Reading (broadly accepting but modifying the meaning to fit their own situation), or an Oppositional Reading (rejecting the preferred meaning and constructing an alternative). This model is essential for essays on representation and audience, showing that meaning is a two-way process shaped by both production and reception contexts.

8. Mulvey’s Male Gaze |

Laura Mulvey’s concept of the male gaze describes how mainstream media often depict women from a heterosexual male perspective, turning them into passive objects for visual pleasure. Characteristics include framing that fragments the female body, camera movements that linger on curves, and narratives that position men as active lookers and women as those to be looked at. While originally developed for classical Hollywood cinema, the male gaze is now applied to advertising, music videos, and game art. When discussing representation, consider how the product either reinforces or challenges the male gaze, and how this affects the audience’s viewing experience.

9. Semiotics: Signifier, Signified, Denotation and Connotation |

Semiotics, rooted in the work of Ferdinand de Saussure and Roland Barthes, provides a toolkit for decoding media language. Every sign consists of a Signifier (the physical form: a word, image, sound) and the Signified (the mental concept it triggers). Analysis involves describing Denotation (what you literally see or hear) and then exploring Connotation (the associated cultural meanings). For instance, a rose denotes a flower but connotes romance, passion, or secrecy. In an exam, always move beyond denotation to discuss what the sign connotes and how this contributes to the overall representation or narrative message.

10. Key Media Language: Camera Shots, Angles and Movement |

Mastering terminology for camera techniques is a non-negotiable foundation for any visual analysis. Below is a quick-reference table for essential shot types, angles, and movements. Use these terms precisely when deconstructing moving-image products.

Meaning & Effect
Extreme Long Shot (ELS) Establishes setting, character appears small against environment.
Long Shot (LS) 远景 Full body visible, shows posture and setting relation.
Medium Shot (MS) 中景 Waist up; common for dialogue, balances character and background.
Close-Up (CU) 特写 Face or object detail; reveals emotion, importance.
Extreme Close-Up (ECU) 极特写 Single eye, letter, or detail; intense focus or symbolism.
High Angle 俯角 Camera above, looking down; subject appears vulnerable, weak.
Low Angle 仰角 Camera below, looking up; subject appears powerful, dominant.
Horizon is slanted; suggests disorientation, tension.
Horizontal/vertical rotation on a fixed base; follows action or reveals.
Camera moves physically through the space; audience involvement.

Mise-en-scène refers to everything placed in front of the camera and is remembered through the acronym CLAMPS: Costume, Lighting, Acting (or position of characters), Makeup, Props, Setting. Each element carries meaning. A character’s costume can denote status or rebellion; high-key lighting suggests daytime or glamour, while low-key lighting creates shadows and suspense. Systematically scanning a scene for CLAMPS ensures you do not miss visual evidence when discussing how a shot constructs representation and mood.

12. The Hypodermic Needle Model (Early Audience Theory) |

As a contrast to active audience theories, the Hypodermic Needle model assumes that media messages are directly injected into a passive audience, causing an immediate and uniform response. While largely discredited today, it remains useful for evaluating sensationalist press coverage or moral panics around media effects (e.g., claims that violent video games create violent behaviour). In an exam, use this model to discuss historical or alarmist perspectives, but always balance it with more contemporary theories like Uses and Gratifications to show a nuanced understanding of audience autonomy.
