📚 Year 11 Eduqas History: Formulas & Theorems Quick Reference Handbook | Eduqas

History is not just a pile of dates and names waiting to be memorised. It is a discipline powered by repeatable thinking tools—what we like to call ‘formulas’ and ‘theorems’—that help you analyse sources, build watertight arguments, and unlock every mark on the Eduqas GCSE paper. This handbook curates the essential formulas that work across all periods and question types, turning the exam into a method you can follow step by step.

1. The PEE Theorem for Source Analysis | 史料分析 PEE 定理

The fundamental theorem of any source-based question: Point + Evidence + Explain → Effective Source Analysis. First, state your point about the source (e.g. ‘Source A is useful for showing Nazi propaganda methods’). Next, embed a short piece of evidence directly from the source (a quote or a description). Finally, explain how that evidence supports your point, linking to provenance, typicality, or tone. The formula guarantees that every comment is rooted in the material.

2. The 5W Source Evaluation Theorem | 5W

To judge a source’s reliability or utility, apply the 5W equation: Who? + When? + Why? + What? + (to) Whom? → Trustworthiness Profile. Who created it? When was it made (contemporary or hindsight)? Why was it produced (purpose)? What is its nature (diary, speech, poster)? Whom was it intended for? The sum of these variables reveals whether the source is credible, biased, or limited for a given enquiry.

3. The C-C-O Formula for Utility | C-C-O

Utility questions demand a structural answer. Use Content + Context + Own Knowledge → Utility Judgement. Start with what you can see or read in the source (content). Then connect that to the historical context outside the source (what was happening at the time). Finally, bring in own knowledge—facts not in the source—to confirm, challenge, or deepen the view. The formula delivers a balanced ‘useful … however …’ conclusion every time.

4. The SPERM Factor Model for Causes | 因果分析的 SPERM 因素模型

When explaining why an event happened, sort causes using the SPERM model: Social + Political + Economic + Religious + Military → Causal Web. This prevents you from writing a one-dimensional narrative. For example, the rise of Hitler can be linked to social resentment, political manoeuvring, economic depression, fear of communism (quasi-religious), and military ambition. Tick each SPERM box to ensure breadth in your answer.

5. The Cause–Consequence Equation |

Move from listing reasons to analysing impact with Trigger Event + Underlying Factors + Consequence Chain → Ranked Significance. Start by identifying the trigger (the spark). Then uncover underlying factors (long-term pressures). Next, trace a chain of consequences (immediate → medium-term → long-term). Finally, rank which factor was most decisive. This formula transforms simple description into analytical narrative.

6. The Change & Continuity Matrix |

When a question asks about ‘change’, do not overlook what stayed the same. Think of a 2×2 grid: Area of Life × Change/Continuity over Time → Balanced Verdict. Choose areas such as politics, economy, social structure, and culture. For each, decide whether there was rapid change, gradual evolution, or little change. Then make an overall judgement: did the period represent a turning point or was the picture more mixed? The matrix keeps your answer layered and specific.

7. The Significance Scale Theorem |

To assess significance, weigh an event or person on four scales: Depth of Impact + Breadth of Impact + Duration + Legacy → Significance Score. Did it deeply affect people’s lives? How many people were affected? For how long? Did it set a precedent, change attitudes, or create a new norm? The formula works for anything from the invention of the printing press to the Treaty of Versailles.

8. The Interpretation Reliability Formula |

When two historians disagree, use Interpretation A + Interpretation B + Evidence Check + Nature of Interpretations → Judgement of Strength. Ask: what evidence does each use? What is the historian’s perspective or purpose? Does one ignore key facts? Then state which interpretation is more convincing and why. Always anchor your verdict in specifics, not just ‘Historian A is right because I agree’.

9. The Counter-Argument Insertion Rule |

Top-level answers always include a ‘however’ moment. Follow the rule: Main Argument + ‘However’ + Counter-Argument + Rebuttal (or Synthesis) → A3/A4 Grade Answer. After presenting your core point, introduce a valid opposing view or limitation. Then either rebut it with stronger evidence or synthesise to show how both sides partly explain the picture. This demonstrates critical thinking—a key discriminator in the mark scheme.

10. The Chronology Linking Theorem |

Narrative questions about a period cannot simply be a list of events. Use Event 1 → Link Phrase (led to, resulted in, intensified) + Event 2 → Link Phrase + Event 3 → Overall Trajectory Statement. This structure turns a timeline into a chain of causation. Every link phrase must be justified: did A directly cause B, or did it accelerate an existing trend? The theorem stops ‘and then’ history and builds flow.

11. The Exam Question Deconstruction Formula |

Before writing, deconstruct the question in 60 seconds: Command Word × Key Concept × Chronological Scope × Weighting → Plan Outline. Circle the command word (e.g. ‘explain’, ‘evaluate’, ‘how far’), underline the key concept (e.g. ‘opposition’, ‘change’), identify the dates given, and note the SPaG or mark weighting. The formula prevents off-topic disasters and ensures you answer precisely what the examiner wants.

12. The Mark Scheme Alignment Theorem |

Know the examiner’s internal thought process. For Eduqas essays, the theorem is: Well-Structured Paragraphs + Specific Own Knowledge + Sustained Judgement + Clear Communication = Top Band. Each paragraph should make one analytical point, stuffed with precise factual detail (dates, statistics, names), and end with a mini-judgement that pushes the argument forward. Throughout, write with clarity and historical terminology. Aligning every sentence to this blueprint maximises your score.
