1. Introduction to Sociology & Sociological Imagination |

Sociology encourages us to look beyond personal experiences and see how wider social forces shape our lives. C. Wright Mills introduced the concept of the ‘sociological imagination’ – the ability to connect individual troubles with public issues. For example, unemployment is not just a personal failing but may result from economic recession or structural changes in the job market.

This perspective helps us question taken-for-granted assumptions. By thinking sociologically, we can identify patterns in society, such as how social class shapes educational achievement or how gender expectations influence career choices. The sociological imagination is the foundation for all further study in the subject.

2. Key Sociological Perspectives |

To analyse society, sociologists use different theoretical perspectives. The three main ones you need to know for SQA Sociology are functionalism, conflict theory (often Marxism), and symbolic interactionism. Each offers a unique lens for understanding social structures and human behaviour.

Functionalism sees society as a system of interconnected parts that work together to maintain stability. Institutions like the family, education, and religion each perform functions that benefit the whole. Émile Durkheim used the analogy of the human body – each organ has a role in keeping the body alive.

Conflict theory, influenced by Karl Marx, focuses on inequality and power struggles between groups. It argues that society is divided into a ruling class (bourgeoisie) and a working class (proletariat), and that conflict over resources drives social change. This perspective highlights how institutions may reproduce inequality.

Symbolic interactionism concentrates on small-scale, everyday interactions. It explores how people use symbols and language to create meaning. George Herbert Mead argued that our sense of self develops through social interaction. This perspective is useful for understanding identity formation and labelling in schools.

3. Socialisation and Culture |

Socialisation is the lifelong process through which individuals learn the norms, values, and behaviours appropriate to their society. It is divided into primary socialisation (occurring in the family during early childhood) and secondary socialisation (taking place through schools, peer groups, media, and workplace). Without socialisation, human beings cannot develop normal social skills, as shown by cases of feral children.

Culture refers to the shared way of life of a group, including language, beliefs, customs, and material objects. Within any society, there may be subcultures – groups whose values differ from mainstream culture. Sociologists also study cultural diversity and the concept of cultural relativism, which means judging a culture by its own standards rather than through the lens of another.

4. Social Stratification and Inequality |

Social stratification refers to the way society is layered in a hierarchy, with some groups having more resources, power, and prestige than others. Stratification can be based on class, gender, ethnicity, age, and disability. Sociologists study how these dimensions are linked to life chances – the opportunities individuals have to achieve positive outcomes like good health, education, and employment.

Class is often measured by occupation, income, and wealth. The Registrar General’s social class scale or the National Statistics Socio-economic Classification (NS-SEC) are used in the UK. Marxist sociologists see class division as the fundamental conflict in capitalist societies, while functionalists argue that stratification motivates talented people to fill important positions.

Gender inequality is visible in the gender pay gap, the disproportionate share of domestic labour, and underrepresentation in politics. Ethnic minority groups may face institutional discrimination in housing, employment, and the criminal justice system. Intersectionality highlights how overlapping identities can create multiple disadvantages.

5. Families and Households |

The family is a primary agent of socialisation and a key social institution. Families in the UK have become more diverse: nuclear families (two generations living together), extended families, lone-parent families, reconstituted (blended) families, and same-sex families are all common today. Sociologists study how family structures have changed and why.

Functionalist thinkers like Talcott Parsons argued that the nuclear family performs essential functions: primary socialisation of children and stabilisation of adult personalities. However, feminist sociologists criticise this view, pointing out the dark side of the family, including domestic abuse and the unequal distribution of housework. The symmetrical family thesis suggests that gender roles within families are becoming more equal, though evidence for this is mixed.

6. Education and Society |

Education serves several functions in society: transmitting knowledge and skills, socialising children into shared values, and selecting people for different roles in the economy. From a functionalist perspective, education promotes meritocracy – the idea that individuals achieve based on ability and effort. Durkheim stressed that education creates social solidarity by teaching a common heritage.

Conflict theorists, however, argue that education reproduces class inequality. The correspondence principle (Bowles and Gintis) suggests that the hidden curriculum in schools mirrors the workplace, training working-class pupils for obedience while middle-class pupils are prepared for leadership. Factors inside and outside school, such as material deprivation, cultural capital, and teacher labelling, all influence differential educational achievement.

7. Crime and Deviance |

Deviance refers to behaviour that violates social norms, while crime is behaviour that breaks formal laws. What counts as deviant varies across cultures and over time, which shows that deviance is socially constructed. Sociologists are interested not only in why people commit crime but also in how certain behaviours come to be labelled as criminal.

Functionalist theories, such as Durkheim’s, argue that a certain amount of deviance is normal and can reinforce social norms by prompting public disapproval. Merton’s strain theory explains crime as arising when there is a gap between societal goals (e.g., wealth) and the legitimate means to achieve them. Subcultural theories explore how group norms encourage delinquency.

Labelling theory, rooted in symbolic interactionism, shifts the focus from the criminal act to societal reaction. Howard Becker argued that deviance is not a quality of the act but a consequence of the label applied by powerful groups. This can lead to a self-fulfilling prophecy, where labelled individuals internalise the label and act accordingly. Official crime statistics are socially constructed, often reflecting policing priorities rather than actual crime rates.

8. Mass Media and Society |

The mass media – television, social media, newspapers, and film – play a powerful role in shaping public opinion and culture. Sociologists examine media ownership, content, and audience effects. The concentration of media ownership in the hands of a few large corporations raises concerns about the diversity of viewpoints and the potential for biased news coverage.

Several models explain media influence. The hypodermic syringe model portrays audiences as passive recipients who are directly injected with media messages; it is now largely discredited. The two-step flow model suggests that opinion leaders interpret media content and pass it on to others. More recent approaches like the uses and gratifications model argue that active audiences use media to meet their own needs, such as entertainment, information, and personal identity.

Stereotypical representations of gender, ethnicity, and social class are frequently found in media content. Sociologists also investigate moral panics, a concept developed by Stanley Cohen to describe how the media can amplify certain events and create exaggerated public fear, often targeting youth subcultures.

9. Social Research Methods |

Sociologists collect evidence using a range of research methods. Quantitative methods, such as questionnaires and official statistics, produce numerical data that can reveal broad patterns. Qualitative methods, such as interviews and observations, provide in-depth understanding of people’s experiences and meanings. The choice of method depends on the research question, practical constraints, and theoretical perspective (positivism vs. interpretivism).

Key considerations in research include validity (how true the findings are), reliability (how repeatable the study is), representativeness, and ethics. Ethical issues involve informed consent, confidentiality, and avoidance of harm. The British Sociological Association provides a code of ethics that researchers must follow.

A common structure for evaluating a method involves discussing practical strengths and weaknesses, ethical issues, theoretical strengths (e.g., validity for interpretivists, reliability for positivists), and a concluding example. You are expected to apply this structure when answering exam questions on methods.

10. Core Concepts and Exam Tips |

Throughout your SQA Sociology course, return repeatedly to key concepts such as norms, values, socialisation, culture, identity, power, inequality, and social control. Being able to define these terms precisely and illustrate them with relevant examples is essential for demonstrating knowledge in both short-answer and extended response questions.

When writing exam answers, always address the command word (describe, explain, analyse) and use sociological language. Structure your essays with an introduction, clear paragraphs using the PEEL (Point, Evidence, Explanation, Link) technique, and a brief conclusion. Linking your arguments back to sociological perspectives will help you access higher marks.

Regular revision of sociological studies and theorists (e.g., Durkheim on suicide, Willis on lads, Oakley on housework) is critical. Make connections between topics – education and inequality, media and crime – to show a synoptic understanding. Use past papers to practise timing and application of knowledge to unfamiliar scenarios.
