📚 Common Misconceptions in Year 11 WJEC Economics and How to Correct Them | Year 11 WJEC

Many Year 11 students tackling the WJEC Economics syllabus find themselves losing marks not because they lack understanding, but because they fall into the same predictable traps. Drawing a line between a movement along a demand curve and a shift of the entire curve, distinguishing between price and value, or fully grasping market failure can feel like splitting hairs until an exam question brings the confusion to light. This article highlights nine of the most stubborn misconceptions and shows you how to break free from them. Each section contains a paired explanation in English and Chinese, so you can reinforce the concept in both languages and build the exact vocabulary examiners expect.

1. Movement along the Demand Curve vs. Shift of the Demand Curve |

The most frequent mix-up in Year 11 WJEC Economics is the false belief that any change in price shifts the demand curve. In reality, a change in the good’s own price causes a movement along the existing demand curve – an expansion or contraction of quantity demanded. A shift of the entire demand curve to the right or left, by contrast, occurs only when one of the conditions of demand changes, for example a rise in consumer income, a change in tastes, or the price of a substitute good. Mistaking the two means you risk drawing the wrong diagram and mislabelling the cause of a market change.

Year 11 WJEC

Correct it by asking two questions before you draw: ‘Is the change coming from the price of the good itself?’ If yes, move along the curve. ‘Is the change coming from something else – incomes, advertising, substitutes?’ If yes, shift the curve. Always label a price change as a change in quantity demanded, and a shift as a change in demand. Under WJEC mark schemes, using the right terminology in your written analysis is just as important as drawing the correct diagram.

2. Supply Curve Confusion: Price vs. Costs of Production |

A mirror-image mistake occurs on the supply side. Students often draw a new supply curve when the market price rises, thinking that a higher selling price ‘shifts’ supply. What actually happens is an extension of quantity supplied along the existing supply curve. A genuine shift of the supply curve – an increase or decrease in supply – is triggered by changes in the costs of production, technology, indirect taxes, subsidies, or the number of firms in the industry. Getting this wrong turns what should be a straightforward 4-mark diagram question into a zero.

To lock in the correction, think of the supply curve as a firm’s ‘willingness to sell’ at different prices. A higher market price makes firms willing to sell more, but it does not change their underlying costs. Only a change in those underlying conditions shifts the whole curve. In your revision notes, list the ‘conditions of supply’ on one side and ‘price of the good’ on the other, and decide for each scenario whether quantity supplied or supply itself has changed.

3. Price Elasticity of Demand (PED) Is Not the Same as Slope |

Perhaps the most technical misconception students carry into the exam room is the belief that a steeper demand curve automatically means demand is more price-inelastic, and a flatter curve means more price-elastic. PED measures the percentage change in quantity demanded relative to the percentage change in price; slope measures the absolute change in price over the absolute change in quantity. They are related but not identical. Two demand curves with the same slope can have different PED values at a given point depending on the particular combination of price and quantity. Examiners often test this by asking why a straight-line demand curve exhibits varying elasticity along its length – unitary elastic in the middle, elastic above and inelastic below.

Practise calculating PED using the full formula: %ΔQD ÷ %ΔP. Remember that PED is a number, while slope is a ratio of units. To avoid confusion, never describe a curve as simply ‘elastic’ or ‘inelastic’ without specifying the price range you are talking about. When drawing a demand diagram in an essay, you can reinforce your analysis by labelling the relatively elastic and inelastic portions if the question demands it.

4. Consumer Surplus Is Not Just ‘Money Left Over’ | 消费者剩余不仅仅是“剩下的钱”

Many learners treat consumer surplus as little more than the difference between what a consumer pays and what they could afford. The formal definition is the extra satisfaction or utility gained by consumers because they are able to pay a price that is lower than the maximum they would have been willing to pay. It is represented by the area below the demand curve and above the market price. Misunderstanding this concept leads to errors when a question asks for the welfare effect of a price change, an indirect tax, or a subsidy. Losing consumer surplus often signals a loss of overall economic welfare.

A practical correction is to shade the consumer surplus triangle on every demand-supply diagram you produce, and then re-shade it after a price or policy change. Compare the two triangles – the change in area is the change in consumer welfare. This habit makes the concept visual, which is especially helpful for WJEC data-response questions where you may be asked to identify a welfare loss directly from a graph.

5. Market Equilibrium: Clearing the Market vs. ‘Fair’ Price |

A normative misconception creeps in when students call the equilibrium price a ‘fair’ price or suggest that prices above equilibrium are automatically ‘unfair’. In positive economics, equilibrium simply refers to the price at which quantity demanded equals quantity supplied – the market clears, and there is no tendency for change. Prices above equilibrium create a surplus; prices below create a shortage. Neither situation is described as fair or unfair in WJEC diagrams; those are value judgements. Confusing these can lead to marks lost on evaluation questions that require you to separate positive from normative statements.

Train yourself to use precise language: ‘market-clearing price’ or ‘equilibrium price’ instead of ‘fair price’. In evaluation paragraphs, you can of course discuss whether a market outcome is equitable, but you must first establish the positive analysis – the surplus or shortage – before layering on the normative discussion. This ordered structure is highly valued in WJEC marking rubrics.

6. Inflation: It Is Not Just ‘Things Getting More Expensive’ |

Perhaps the most casually used yet narrowly defined term in the syllabus is inflation. Students often write that inflation means ‘prices are high’ or ‘things are becoming more expensive’. The precise definition is a sustained increase in the general price level of goods and services in an economy over a period of time. A one-off jump in the price of petrol is not inflation; it is a relative price change. Inflation must be general, sustained, and measured by an index such as the Consumer Prices Index (CPI). WJEC examiners frequently present real-world data where prices in some sectors fall while the overall CPI rises – those who misdefine inflation then draw the wrong conclusion.

Build a mental checklist: is the rise general across a basket of goods? Is it sustained over several months or quarters? Is it measured by a recognised index? If the answer to any of these is no, then you are not looking at inflation. When writing exam answers, always refer to the ‘general price level’ and cite the CPI, RPI or another index. This precise vocabulary signals to the examiner that you understand the concept, not just the everyday meaning.

7. Fiscal Policy vs. Monetary Policy: Roles and Instruments |

At Year 11, it is all too common to muddle fiscal and monetary policy, especially when a question asks about policies to control inflation or unemployment. Fiscal policy refers to changes in government spending and taxation, controlled by the government (the Treasury). Monetary policy involves changes in interest rates, the money supply and the exchange rate, managed by a central bank like the Bank of England. A student who writes ‘the government lowered interest rates to fight a recession’ is technically incorrect in the UK context because the Monetary Policy Committee sets the Bank Rate independently. Such detail matters in WJEC essays that ask you to evaluate policy effectiveness.

Draw a two-column table in your notes: one side ‘Fiscal Policy – government spending & taxation’, the other ‘Monetary Policy – interest rates, money supply & exchange rate’. Under each column list the expansionary and contractionary options. Every time you read a policy scenario, classify it into the correct column. For evaluation, note that monetary policy is often faster to implement but can be blunt, whereas fiscal policy can be targeted but takes longer. This structured approach will prevent you from mindlessly recommending ‘lower interest rates and more government spending’ without thinking about which authority is responsible.

8. Unemployment: Not a Single Measure |

Students often treat unemployment as a monolithic concept: either someone has a job or they don’t. WJEC Economics expects you to distinguish between the two main measures – the Claimant Count and the Labour Force Survey (ILO measure) – and to understand types of unemployment. The Claimant Count records those receiving jobseeker-related benefits, so it can understate unemployment when eligibility criteria tighten. The ILO measure surveys households and counts anyone actively seeking work, making it broader but subject to sampling error. A common exam mistake is to claim unemployment has fallen just because benefit claims dropped, ignoring a change in government rules.

In your revision, create a quick-reference guide: Claimant Count = benefit receipts, narrow, subject to political influence; ILO = survey-based, includes those not claiming benefits, internationally comparable. When analysing unemployment data, always ask what measure is being used and whether a change in the measure itself could be driving the headline figure. Then go further: identify the type of unemployment – cyclical, structural, frictional – to show depth of understanding.

9. Externalities: Private vs. Social Costs and Benefits |

A diagram-heavy topic that frequently trips up candidates is the distinction between private costs, external costs, and social cost. Many students label the supply curve as social cost or private cost without understanding the relationship. In a negative externality of production, the supply curve represents only private cost, while the true social cost lies to its left (showing a higher cost at each output level). The vertical distance between the two is the external cost. A common error is to ignore the diagram entirely and write a generic paragraph on pollution, losing the chance to score high analysis marks.

Correct this by drawing three cost curves: MPC (private), MSC (social), and a dashed line for external cost. Then draw the benefit curves similarly for consumption externalities. Label the free-market equilibrium and the socially optimal point. Every time you see a market failure question, force yourself to draw the appropriate externality diagram, even if the question doesn’t explicitly ask for one. The WJEC exam board strongly rewards the use of accurate, labelled diagrams inserted into your analysis.

纠正这一点的方法是画出三条成本曲线:MPC(私人边际成本)、MSC(社会边际成本),并用虚线表示外部成本。
