Common Pitfalls in SQA History and How to Rectify Them | SQA

📚 Common Pitfalls in SQA History and How to Rectify Them | SQA

Many SQA History candidates at National 5 and Higher levels work hard to recall facts, yet find that their marks do not reflect their effort. The reason often lies not in a lack of knowledge, but in a handful of predictable mistakes that creep into source handling, essay writing, and exam technique. By understanding these common pitfalls and, more importantly, learning how to correct them, you can transform a grade C answer into an A-grade analysis. This article identifies the most frequent errors observed by examiners and provides clear, actionable strategies to help you avoid them.

1. Misreading the Command Words |

One of the most widespread errors is failing to recognise what the question actually asks you to do. Words such as ‘describe’, ‘explain’, ‘evaluate’, and ‘to what extent’ each demand a different structure and depth. A prompt that asks you to ‘explain the reasons for the Suffragette militancy’ requires causal chains (‘x led to y, which in turn caused z’), whereas ‘describe the role of women on the Home Front’ simply requires you to outline the facts. Mixing up these instructions often results in a narrative response when analysis was expected, which caps your marks at the lower bands.

To correct this, highlight the command word and write a short note beside the question: ‘Causes? Consequences? Comparison?’ For ‘to what extent’ questions, always plan to argue both sides before reaching a substantiated conclusion. Practise with past papers by identifying command words first, then brainstorming the type of response needed.

2. Temptation to Narrate Rather Than Analyse |

History is not simply a story of ‘what happened next’. Yet many candidates default to chronological storytelling, especially when they feel uncertain about the deeper themes. For example, a question on the impact of the Treaty of Versailles might see a candidate list every clause in order, rather than grouping them by theme (territorial, military, economic) and then analysing their effects on Germany’s political stability. Narrative often uses phrases like ‘then’, ‘after that’, ‘and then’, whereas analysis uses ‘this led to’, ‘the consequence was’, ‘this is significant because’.

Break the narrative habit by planning your paragraphs around analytical points, not chronological events. Each paragraph should start with a mini-judgement: ‘The most damaging aspect of Versailles was the war guilt clause because…’. Practise converting a chronological timeline into a mind map structured by themes, and train yourself to ask ‘So what?’ after every factual statement.

3. Confusing Description with Evaluation in Source Questions |

SQA source questions demand far more than simple comprehension. A typical ‘evaluate the usefulness’ question expects you to consider provenance (who wrote it, when, why), content (what it says and what it omits), and wider contextual knowledge. A common pitfall is to simply summarise what the source says and then label it ‘useful’ or ‘biased’ without giving a reasoned justification. For instance, stating ‘Source A is useful because it tells us about the conditions in the trenches’ is description, not evaluation. You must explain why the author’s perspective makes it useful and also identify its limitations.

To avoid this, use the PAC structure (Provenance, Argument from content, Contextual knowledge) for every source evaluation. When discussing provenance, connect it directly to the question: ‘This source was written by a British general in 1916, immediately after the Somme, so it is likely to downplay casualties to maintain morale.’ Always note what the source does not say and contrast it with your own knowledge.

4. Neglecting Provenance and Purpose Entirely |

Closely related to the previous point, some candidates completely overlook the provenance information printed above each source. The date, author, and type of source are not merely decorative details; they are the keys to unlocking the source’s value and limitations. A diary entry from a soldier carries a different weight from an official government report or a newspaper editorial. Treating them all as equal ‘evidence’ without weighing their reliability severely limits the depth of your evaluation.

Make it a rule that the first sentence of any source answer must reference provenance: ‘Source B, a photograph taken by a war correspondent in 1944, is useful for showing…’. Annotate every source by circling the date and author and jotting down an immediate inference: ‘Primary? Secondary? Likely purpose?’ This small investment of time reshapes your entire answer.

5. Presenting a One-Sided Argument |

Many questions, especially at Higher level, demand a balanced consideration of multiple factors. A classic error is to write an entire essay arguing that only one factor was responsible for an outcome. For example, answering ‘To what extent was appeasement the main cause of World War II?’ by insisting that it was solely appeasement, without acknowledging the role of the Treaty of Versailles, the failure of the League of Nations, or Hitler’s expansionist ideology, will lose marks for balance and depth. Such one-sidedness ignores the complexity of historical causation.

Always plan for multiple causes or factors. A simple grid with columns for ‘Factor’, ‘Evidence’, ‘Importance’ forces you to consider alternative explanations. Use phrases like ‘While factor A was significant, factor B arguably played a more decisive role because…’. In your conclusion, weigh the factors against each other rather than simply restating your favourite one.

6. Relying on Vague Generalisations |

Statements like ‘the public were unhappy’, ‘it led to economic problems’, or ‘technology improved’ are exam killers. They show no specific knowledge and will never earn more than a mark or two. SQA markers are looking for substantiated, precise claims: ‘Working-class discontent in Glasgow escalated into the 1919 George Square riots’ is far stronger than ‘there was social unrest’. Vague generalisations make your argument appear shallow and unconvincing.

For each topic, compile a list of ‘killer statistics’ – precise dates, names, laws, and numbers. Instead of saying ‘many men died’, write ‘approximately 20,000 British soldiers were killed on the first day of the Somme’. Every paragraph should contain at least one concrete piece of evidence. Practise converting general statements into specific ones as a revision exercise.

7. Weak Essay Structure and Missing Conclusions |

An essay that jumps from one idea to the next without clear signposting is difficult to follow and signals a lack of structured thinking. Many candidates also either omit the conclusion altogether or write a one-sentence afterthought that adds nothing. A conclusion is not a repetition of everything you have said; it is where you deliver your final, balanced verdict based on the evidence presented. Without it, an essay feels unfinished and cannot access the highest marks.

Adopt a simple but firm structure: Introduction (brief context, list factors, state your line of argument), 3-4 analytical paragraphs each starting with a clear topic sentence, and a conclusion that weighs up factors and answers the question directly. Use linking phrases such as ‘Furthermore’, ‘In contrast’, ‘Moreover’, and ‘Consequently’ to guide the reader. Always leave 5 minutes to craft a thoughtful conclusion.

8. Misunderstanding Change and Continuity |

SQA questions increasingly test the concept of change over time, yet many candidates treat history as a series of disconnected events. When asked ‘How far did the lives of workers change between 1830 and 1900?’, a weak answer will present an 1830 snapshot and a 1900 snapshot without explaining the process of change. Worse, it may ignore elements that stayed the same. Recognising continuity is just as important as identifying change. The failure to discuss what remained stable often results in an unbalanced argument.

When revising any topic, create a timeline and annotate it with the pace and nature of change (rapid, gradual, sudden) and the forces driving it. Explicitly list aspects that remained constant. Use comparative language: ‘While housing conditions showed limited improvement, political representation was transformed by the Reform Acts.’ This demonstrates a sophisticated grasp of historical dynamics.

9. Poor Time Management in the Exam Hall |

A brilliant answer that is cut short after half a page will never achieve full marks. A common pitfall is spending too long on the first essay or source question, leaving insufficient time for the remaining required questions. Candidates often write excessively long introductions or elaborate on their favourite topic, neglecting other sections to the point where they leave questions unanswered or answered hastily. Time management is as much an exam skill as historical knowledge.

Before the exam, know the mark allocation and allocate time proportionally. For example, in a 20-mark essay, spend roughly 25 minutes. Stick rigidly to your allocated time even if you feel you could write more; it is better to have a complete, balanced answer across all questions. Practise past papers under timed conditions, using a watch, not a phone. Leave time at the end to proofread for silly errors.

10. Treating Sources as Factual Records |

Another pervasive error is to use the content of historical sources as incontrovertible fact. When a candidate writes ‘Source C proves that the Treaty was unfair’, they have failed to understand that every source is a reflection of its author’s perspective and purpose, not a transparent window onto the past. Sources are not ‘proof’; they are evidence to be interrogated. Confusing the source’s opinion with objective truth leads to uncritical acceptance and weak evaluation.

Adopt a critical mindset: ‘Source C claims the treaty was unfair. However, the author was a German politician writing in 1920, seeking to gain public support by blaming the Allies. Therefore his claim needs to be treated with caution.’ Always separate what the source says from what you know, and never use the source’s assertions to state a fact unless corroborated by your own contextual knowledge.

11. Overlooking the Importance of Contextual Knowledge |

Even the most skilled source analysis will falter if it floats in a vacuum. Some candidates treat source questions as if they are comprehension exercises, labelling a source ‘biased’ simply because it is emotive, without explaining bias using specific contextual knowledge. For example, to evaluate a source on the Highland Clearances, you must know that sheep farming was more profitable than subsistence crofting; otherwise the landowner’s motives remain obscure. Context transforms a generic comment into a sharp evaluation.

Weave context into every evaluation paragraph. After commenting on a source’s content, add a sentence beginning with ‘From my own knowledge I know that…’ and link it back to the question. Revise by pairing source examples with the precise background events they refer to, so that in the exam the connection is automatic.

12. Ignoring the ‘How Fully’ and ‘How Useful’ Question Types |

National 5 in particular features questions like ‘How fully does Source A explain…’ or ‘How useful is Source B for…’. A frequent mistake is to answer these as if they were simply ‘What can you learn?’ questions. Candidates describe the information given, then stop. A ‘How fully’ answer must identify points the source makes, but also, crucially, points it misses that are relevant. A ‘How useful’ answer must balance what the source tells us with what it does not, always considering provenance.

For ‘How fully’, create two mental columns: ‘What the source says’ and ‘What relevant information is missing’. State clearly: ‘Source A gives a fairly full explanation because it mentions X and Y, but it does not cover Z, which is also important.’ For ‘How useful’, always mention provenance, content that is useful, content that is missing, and then give an overall judgement. Practise these specific structures relentlessly.
