1. Understanding Philosophy |

Philosophy is the rational investigation of fundamental questions about existence, knowledge, and value. It does not rely on empirical evidence alone but emphasises logical analysis, conceptual clarity, and the examination of assumptions behind our beliefs. At AS level, you are introduced to philosophy as an activity focused on argument rather than mere opinion.

Key philosophical skills include identifying premises and conclusions, distinguishing between deductive and inductive reasoning, and evaluating the strength of inferences. A deductive argument aims for certainty: if the premises are true, the conclusion must be true. An inductive argument offers probability, where the premises provide support but do not guarantee the conclusion.

2. Arguments and Fallacies |

A sound argument is one that is both valid in logical form and has true premises. A fallacy, by contrast, is a flaw in reasoning that weakens an argument. At AS level you must learn to spot common informal fallacies, such as ad hominem (attacking the person instead of the position), begging the question (assuming what you are trying to prove), and the straw man fallacy (misrepresenting an opponent’s view to make it easier to attack).

Understanding fallacies is not just an academic exercise; it enables you to critically assess the arguments of classic philosophers as well as those in contemporary ethical and religious debates. Always ask yourself whether a philosopher’s reasoning contains an unwarranted assumption or an emotional appeal that replaces logic.

3. The Ontological Argument |

The ontological argument is a priori, arguing from the concept of God to God’s necessary existence. Anselm defines God as “that than which nothing greater can be conceived”. He argues that if such a being exists only in the mind, we could conceive of an even greater being that exists in reality too, which is a contradiction. Therefore, God must exist both in the mind and in reality.

Descartes reformulates the idea by comparing God’s existence to the necessary property of a triangle having three angles equal to two right angles. The CCEA syllabus expects you to understand Gaunilo’s ‘perfect island’ reply, which suggests that Anselm’s logic could absurdly prove the existence of any perfect thing. Kant’s objection that existence is not a predicate is also central: existence does not add to the concept of a thing, so you cannot define something into existence.

4. The Cosmological Argument |

Cosmological arguments are a posteriori, starting from observed facts about the universe and arguing to a first cause or necessary being. Aquinas’ Third Way is a major focus: it argues that we see contingent beings (things that could not exist) and that not every being can be contingent, otherwise at some time nothing would have existed. Therefore, there must be a necessary being that causes all contingent beings to exist.

Hume challenges the argument’s leap from a series of causes within experience to a transcendent First Cause. He questions why the first cause must be God and asks why the universe as a whole cannot be the necessary being. The fallacy of composition is also relevant: what is true of the parts may not be true of the whole. Additionally, CCEA students should know that science’s Big Bang theory is sometimes used in dialogue with the argument, though it does not straightforwardly confirm a divine cause.

5. The Teleological Argument |

The teleological argument, or argument from design, infers an intelligent designer from the apparent order and purpose in the world. Paley’s watch analogy is the classic version: if you found a watch on a heath, you would infer a watchmaker because of its complexity and directed fitness. Similarly, the universe, with its far more intricate order, points to a divine designer.

Hume’s criticisms, presented through Philo in the Dialogues Concerning Natural Religion, are essential. He argues that the analogy is weak (the world is not obviously like a machine), that the argument does not prove the God of classical theism (it could point to multiple designers or an apprentice deity), and that suffering challenges the idea of benevolent design. Darwin’s theory of evolution by natural selection provides a powerful alternative explanation for biological complexity without appeal to a designer.

6. The Problem of Evil |

The logical problem of evil claims that the existence of an omnipotent, omnibenevolent God is logically incompatible with the existence of evil. If God wants to prevent evil and can, there should be no evil. Since evil exists, such a God cannot exist. The evidential problem focuses on the sheer amount and intensity of suffering, arguing that this makes God’s existence improbable.

Key defences and theodicies include the free will defence (evil is the result of creaturely free will, a greater good that God could not eliminate without removing free will) and soul-making theodicies (suffering helps people develop morally and spiritually). CCEA also examines the evidential challenge presented by intense suffering and the problem of animal suffering, asking whether a perfectly good God would allow such pain for no discernible moral growth.

7. Religious Language |

The debate on religious language asks whether it is meaningful to speak about God. The verification principle, advanced by the logical positivists, states that a statement is meaningful only if it is analytically true or empirically verifiable. According to this view, theological claims like “God loves us” are neither logically necessary nor observable, and so they are cognitively meaningless.

Ayer’s weak verification and the subsequent criticisms are crucial. Flew’s falsification principle takes a different approach: a statement is meaningless if there is no conceivable evidence that would count against it. He uses the parable of the invisible gardener to show how religious claims die a “death by a thousand qualifications”. Responses include the idea that religious language expresses a ‘form of life’ (Wittgenstein) or functions symbolically, rather than making literal factual statements.

8. Epistemology: Rationalism vs. Empiricism |

Epistemology, the study of knowledge, asks what knowledge is and how we acquire it. The classic definition of knowledge is justified true belief, though you must be aware of Gettier cases that challenge this. At AS, the rationalism-empiricism debate is central. Rationalists argue that the mind possesses innate ideas and that reason is the primary source of knowledge, while empiricists claim all knowledge originates in sense experience.

Descartes’ cogito (“I think, therefore I am”) is an attempt to find an indubitable foundation for knowledge, placing reason above the unreliable senses. Locke, on the other hand, describes the mind as a tabula rasa, a blank slate filled by experience. CCEA expects you to evaluate both positions, considering the strengths and limitations of each, such as the empiricist inability to account for conceptual truths like mathematics without some form of innate structure.

9. Ethical Theories: Utilitarianism |

Utilitarianism is a teleological ethical theory that judges the morality of an action by its consequences. The principle of utility holds that an action is right if it produces the greatest happiness for the greatest number. Bentham’s quantitative hedonistic calculus weighs pleasures by intensity, duration, certainty, propinquity, fecundity, purity, and extent.

Mill’s qualitative utilitarianism modifies Bentham: he argues that higher pleasures (intellectual and moral) are superior to lower bodily pleasures. He famously states, “It is better to be a human being dissatisfied than a pig satisfied”. Criticisms include the difficulty of measuring pleasure, the threat that utilitarianism could justify injustices against minorities for the sake of overall happiness, and the problem of personal integrity raised by the demandingness of the theory.

10. Kantian Ethics |

Kantian ethics is deontological, meaning the rightness of an action is based on duty and the intrinsic moral quality of the act itself, not on consequences. Kant’s categorical imperative is the supreme principle of morality. The first formulation states: “Act only according to that maxim whereby you can at the same time will that it should become a universal law”.

The second formulation, the formula of humanity, insists that we treat humanity, in ourselves and others, always as an end in itself and never merely as a means. CCEA explores strengths such as the respect for persons and the clarity of absolute moral rules, alongside weaknesses including conflicting duties and the inability to cope with morally relevant exceptions. You should also understand the role of the good will as the only thing good without qualification.

11. Virtue Ethics |

Virtue ethics shifts the focus from the morality of isolated actions to the character of the moral agent. Aristotle’s ethics are teleological, aiming at eudaimonia (flourishing) as the final end. He argues that a good life is lived according to reason, cultivating moral virtues through habituation, and achieving the doctrine of the mean between excess and deficiency for each virtue.

For example, courage is the mean between rashness and cowardice. Modern virtue ethics, revived by Anscombe and MacIntyre, stresses the importance of moral character over rigid rules. Strengths include its attention to human flourishing and the importance of moral education. Criticisms point to its vagueness in guiding specific actions and the potential for cultural relativism in identifying the virtues.

12. Applied Ethics: Euthanasia |

Applied ethics requires you to deploy the ethical theories to a practical issue. Euthanasia, meaning ‘good death’, is the deliberate ending of a life to relieve suffering. The moral debate distinguishes between active euthanasia (directly causing death) and passive euthanasia (withholding or withdrawing life-prolonging treatment), as well as voluntary, non-voluntary, and involuntary euthanasia.

Utilitarian arguments focus on quality of life and the reduction of suffering, often supporting the legalisation of voluntary active euthanasia. Kantian ethics, with its absolute prohibition against using a person as a means and the principle of the sanctity of rational life, tends to oppose it. Virtue ethics asks what the compassionate and temperate person would do, highlighting the importance of terminal care and dying with dignity. CCEA essays require you to synthesise these perspectives, weighing autonomy against the sanctity of life.
