Welcome to your GCSE OCR History revision companion. This handbook transforms the key concepts you need for exam success into a set of memorable ‘formulae’ and ‘theorems’. Instead of memorising disconnected facts, you will see how causes, consequences, change and continuity can be analysed using logical structures. Each formula is accompanied by a worked example from topics such as the Cold War, Nazi Germany and the inter-war international order. Keep this guide by your side when you answer essay questions and evaluate sources.

1. The Causation Formula |

Whenever an exam question asks ‘why’ something happened, you can model your answer using the Causation Formula. Long-term factors set the scene, short-term factors increase tension, and a trigger event provides the immediate spark. Together they produce the historical event.

Formula: Long-term Causes + Short-term Causes + Trigger → Event

Example: The origins of the First World War. Long-term causes include militarism, the alliance system, imperialism and nationalism (MAIN). Short-term causes include the Balkan Wars and the Moroccan Crises. The trigger was the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in June 1914.

2. The Consequence Theorem |

The Consequence Theorem reminds you that an event never has only one effect. Consequences can be intended or unintended, immediate or long-term, and they often create new tensions. In OCR exams, you must show how outcomes can be categorised to reach the highest marks.

Theorem: Consequence = Immediate Result + Long-term Shift + Unintended Outcome

Apply this to the Treaty of Versailles (1919). Immediate result: Germany lost territory and was forced to pay reparations. Long-term shift: Weimar Republic was weakened and political extremism grew. Unintended outcome: The harsh terms fuelled resentment that Hitler later exploited. When writing about the treaty’s impact, structure paragraphs around these three dimensions.

3. The Change and Continuity Equation |

OCR history papers often ask ‘how far’ something changed. The Change and Continuity Equation helps you avoid one-sided arguments. You must weigh up what stayed the same against what altered, and then reach a balanced judgement.

Equation: Degree of Change = (New Features) – (Enduring Traditions)

Consider the lives of women in Nazi Germany. New features: Women were encouraged to leave employment and focus on Kinder, Küche, Kirche (children, kitchen, church). Marriage loans and the Mother’s Cross introduced. However, enduring traditions: Many working-class women still had to work in factories, and during wartime female employment rose sharply. Overall judgement: policy changed the ideological pressure, but economic reality ensured considerable continuity.

4. The Source Utility Formula |

When you analyse a source, the Utility Formula helps you go beyond a simple ‘it is useful because it is primary’. You must evaluate content, provenance, context and limitations. Usefulness also depends on the specific question asked.

Formula: Utility = (Content × Context) – Limitations × purpose

Take a 1948 British cartoon showing Stalin blocking supplies to Berlin. Content: Stalin as a bear trapping Berliners. Context: it was published during the Berlin Blockade, aiming to rally support for the airlift. Limitation: it is one-sided propaganda and does not explain Soviet security concerns. Usefulness: highly useful for studying British public opinion and Cold War attitudes, but less useful for factual detail on Soviet motives.

5. The Interpretation Evaluation Theorem |

For the OCR Historical Interpretations question, you need to compare how and why different historians or later commentators have produced contrasting views. The Evaluation Theorem breaks this process down into identifiable components.

Theorem: Interpretation = Historian’s Background + Contemporary Evidence + Purpose

Example: Contrasting interpretations of appeasement. Orthodox view in the 1940s and 1950s (e.g. Churchill) argued it was cowardly and encouraged Hitler. Revisionist historians in the 1960s (e.g. A.J.P. Taylor) reinterpreted it as a rational response to the fear of another war and economic weakness. A later post-revisionist view incorporates released archives and judges it as a miscalculation. Each interpretation reflects the historian’s context and the available source material.

6. The Significance Measurement Scale |

Not all events are equally significant. The Measurement Scale gives you criteria to assess significance: how deeply people’s lives were affected, how many people were impacted, and how long the effects lasted. Significance can also shift over time.

Scale: Significance = Scale of Impact × Duration of Change ÷ Contemporary Attention

Apply this to the invention of the printing press c.1440 versus the Field of the Cloth of Gold (1520). The printing press had massive long-term impact on literacy, religion and the spread of ideas across Europe. The Field of the Cloth of Gold was a spectacular diplomatic meeting between Henry VIII and Francis I, but its political consequences were shallow and short-lived. Despite the contemporary attention, the long-term significance of the press is far greater.

7. The Similarity and Difference Ratio |

Comparison questions require you to identify both similarities and differences. The Ratio formula encourages you not just to list them, but to decide if the balance tilts more towards similarity or difference overall.

Ratio: Comparative Judgement = (Similarities) : (Differences)

Compare the rise of Mussolini and Hitler. Similarities: both exploited post-war economic crisis, used paramilitary violence (Blackshirts, SA), and promised national revival. Differences: Mussolini seized power through the March on Rome, while Hitler was appointed Chancellor legally. Italian fascism was less ideologically racial at first. A strong answer would conclude that the similarities in methods and circumstances outweigh the constitutional differences, but the difference in racial ideology after 1935 is crucial.

8. The Source Provenance Triangle |

When you introduce a source in your exam answer, the triangle reminds you of the three essential attributes to mention: nature, origin and purpose. This not only demonstrates contextual awareness but also sets up your evaluation of its usefulness.

Triangle: Nature (e.g. diary, speech, cartoon) + Origin (who, when, where) + Purpose (why produced) = Provenance basis

Example: A photo of a Nazi book burning in 1933. Nature: a propaganda photograph staged for publication. Origin: taken by a Nazi photographer in Berlin, 10 May 1933. Purpose: to show public support for the regime and intimidate intellectual opponents. Your analysis must then explain how this provenance affects its reliability and the typicality of the event shown.

9. The Narrative Account Link Chain |

For a narrative account question (e.g. ‘Write a narrative account of…’), you must show how events are connected. The Link Chain formula ensures you never describe events in isolation but instead link each step to the next using analytical connectors.

Chain: Event A → (consequence) → Event B → (escalation) → Event C → (crisis) → Outcome

Narrative of the Cold War 1945-1949: Yalta and Potsdam conferences (Event A) revealed mistrust and disagreements over Poland → (consequence) Soviet takeover of Eastern Europe alarmed the USA → (Event B) the Truman Doctrine and Marshall Plan aimed to contain communism → (escalation) Stalin responded with the Cominform and Berlin Blockade → (Event C) the Berlin Airlift succeeded, deepening the division → (Outcome) NATO formed and Germany split into two states. Use linking phrases such as ‘this led directly to’, ‘as a result’, and ‘which in turn provoked’.

10. The Factors Priority Matrix |

When asked to explain why an event occurred or which factor was most important, use the Priority Matrix. You must rank economic, political, social, military and ideological factors, explaining their relative weight, not just stating they all mattered.

Matrix: Importance = (Factor potency × Role in final outcome) / Counter-evidence

For the collapse of the League of Nations, political factors (absence of USA, self-interest of Britain and France) often rank highest. Economic factors (Great Depression) intensified aggressive nationalism. Military factors (no League army, failure of disarmament) exposed its weakness. Ideological factors (reluctance of democracies to confront fascism) enabled aggression. A top answer will explain that political structural weakness was the fundamental cause, but the Depression was the catalyst that turned weakness into failure.

11. The Cold War Turning Point Theorem |

A turning point is an event after which the course of history shifts decisively. This theorem states that a true turning point must satisfy three conditions: it alters key relationships, it makes a return to the previous state impossible, and it launches a new dynamic.

Theorem: Turning Point = Altered Relations + Irreversibility + New Trajectory

Evaluate the Cuban Missile Crisis, 1962. Altered relations: the superpowers established the Moscow-Washington hotline. Irreversibility: direct nuclear confrontation was so terrifying that both sides moved towards détente, and the Limited Test Ban Treaty followed. New trajectory: the arms race shifted from open brinkmanship to arms control talks (SALT). However, some historians argue the crisis was a short-term shock, while the construction of the Berlin Wall in 1961 had already hardened the Cold War division. You must weigh such claims.

12. The Synthesis Formula for Extended Writing |

In a 16-mark or 20-mark essay, your conclusion must do more than repeat points. The Synthesis Formula guides you to pull threads together, show change over time, and place events in a wider historical context. This is where you demonstrate a synoptic grasp of the period.

Formula: Synthesis = Main Argument + Reflection on Pace of Change + Link to Broader Theme

Question: ‘The main reason Hitler became Chancellor in 1933 was the Wall Street Crash.’ How far do you agree? Synthesis: The Crash was vital because it made millions receptive to Nazi promises, but long-term structural problems of the Weimar system and the political miscalculations of von Papen and Hindenburg were the immediate enablers. The pace of change after 1929 was rapid, confirming that economic disaster accelerates political extremism, a broader pattern also seen in Italy and Japan.
