1. Semiotics – The Sign Formula |

Sign = Signifier (Form) + Signified (Concept) → Myth (Cultural Meaning)

Roland Barthes’ model breaks every media sign into two inseparable parts. The signifier is the material form we see or hear – a red rose on a magazine cover, a minor-key soundtrack, a clenched fist in a photograph. The signified is the mental concept it triggers, such as romance, sadness or defiance. When this pair becomes naturalised through repeated use across media, it constructs a myth: a dominant cultural message that masks its own constructedness. For example, a close-up of a diamond ring connotes eternal commitment; the myth stabilises that meaning so it appears just ‘common sense’ rather than a product of advertising codes.

In OCR analysis, you can apply this formula by first identifying dominant signifiers, then tracing the chain of signification toward the reigning myth. Ask: what cultural values does this sign naturalise, and who benefits from its acceptance?

2. Narrative Structure – Todorov’s Equilibrium Model |

Narrative = Equilibrium → Disruption → Recognition → Repair → New Equilibrium

Tzvetan Todorov proposed that all conventional narratives share a five-stage movement. A story begins with a state of equilibrium, a stable, often idealised world. This is disrupted by an event or antagonist, creating a problem. The disruption is then recognised by the characters. Next comes an attempt to repair the damage, often through a quest or confrontation. Finally, a new equilibrium is established – not identical to the original, but restoring order. Bond films, news bulletins and even charity campaigns often follow this template because it provides emotional satisfaction and ideological closure.

When analysing any moving image or print text, map the five stages. If a disruption is missing or the repair is partial, the text may be challenging conventions – a useful point for the ‘media language’ and ‘representations’ assessment objectives.

3. Character Functions – Propp’s Morphology |

Story Engine = Hero + Villain + Dispatcher + Donor + Helper + Princess + False Hero

Vladimir Propp examined hundreds of Russian folk tales and identified seven recurring character types, each performing a narrative function. The Hero seeks something, the Villain obstructs him, the Dispatcher sends the hero on a quest, the Donor provides a magical aid, the Helper assists along the way, the Princess (and her father) often serves as the reward, and the False Hero tries to usurp the hero’s success. While modern media texts may blend or subvert these roles, the skeleton often remains visible: in The Hunger Games, Katniss is Hero and Haymitch is Donor; in a charity ad, the suffering child can be the Princess figure and the donor at home the hero.

For OCR set texts, list the characters and allocate them to Propp’s seven functions. Discuss how their traits activate the viewer’s expectations – and what happens when a function is deliberately withheld or twisted.

4. Binary Oppositions – Levi-Strauss’s Structural Formula |

Meaning = Concept A vs. Concept B (e.g. Young/Old, East/West, Civilised/Wild)

Claude Levi-Strauss argued that narratives and representations are built around fundamental binary oppositions. These oppositions are not neutral; one pole is typically privileged, reinforcing a cultural hierarchy. A crime drama may pit law against chaos, a magazine cover may contrast beauty with plainness, and a news report may frame ‘us’ against ‘them’. By identifying these pairings, the analyst exposes the underlying ideological standpoint of the text.

In your exam, produce a table of oppositions from the set product. Then explain which side is celebrated and how the resolution of the conflict (if any) invites the audience to accept a particular worldview – a media language and representation technique that scores high marks.

5. Genre Theory – Neale’s Repetition and Difference |

Genre Pleasure = Familiar Conventions + Unexpected Variation

Steve Neale contended that genre is a process of ‘repetition and difference’. A genre film or TV episode must provide enough familiar elements – iconography, character archetypes, narrative beats – to meet audience expectations (pleasure of recognition). Yet it also needs to introduce a degree of innovation or hybridity to prevent boredom and to evolve the genre. Successful music videos, for instance, mix performance shots (repetition) with surrealist imagery (difference). Streaming platforms increasingly blend established genres to target niche audiences, a trend you can explore in the media industries section.

When tackling the OCR ‘evolving media’ topic, measure exactly what a product repeats and what it changes. Explain how this balance targets existing fans yet attracts new viewers, linking back to Neale’s formula.

6. Uses and Gratifications – Blumler & Katz’s Audience Needs |

Media Use = Information + Personal Identity + Integration & Social Interaction + Entertainment

Blumler and Katz shifted the question from ‘what media do to people’ to ‘what people do with media’. Their model categorises audience motivations into four needs. Information covers surveillance and knowledge seeking. Personal identity involves reinforcing values and finding models of behaviour. Integration and social interaction relate to building empathy and providing conversational currency. Entertainment means escape, relaxation and emotional release. A single media text can satisfy several needs simultaneously: a reality TV show might offer diversion (entertainment), while its discussion on social media fulfils social interaction.

Apply this formula by constructing a table with the four needs as columns. For your chosen specimen, note specific textual evidence that addresses each need. Always acknowledge that audiences are active decoders who select media to meet their personal gratifications.

7. Encoding/Decoding – Hall’s Reading Positions |

Text Meaning = Preferred Reading → Negotiated Reading ↔ Oppositional Reading

Stuart Hall’s seminal model asserts that producers encode a preferred meaning into a media text, but audiences may not automatically accept it. The preferred reading aligns with the dominant ideology and the producer’s intention. A negotiated reading partially accepts the preferred meaning but adapts it to the audience’s own lived experience. An oppositional reading rejects the encoded message entirely, interpreting it from a critical or resistant standpoint. A tabloid headline may encode sympathy for a wealthy celebrity, but a working-class audience might produce an oppositional reading, seeing the same story as evidence of privilege.

In exam responses, identify the preferred reading explicitly and then construct at least one alternative reading. Relate this to the social and cultural contexts of the target audience, demonstrating your awareness of how meaning is contested.

8. Feminist Representation – van Zoonen’s Formula |

Gender Representation = Spectacle (Object) vs. Active (Subject) – Shifting Power

Liesbet van Zoonen argues that Western media typically objectify women’s bodies, positioning them as passive spectacle for a presumed heterosexual male gaze, while men are more often represented as active individuals driving the narrative. However, she also acknowledges that gender representations can be contested: contemporary advertising sometimes reverses this dynamic, presenting the male body as spectacle and female figures as subjects of the action. The key is to trace the power relations embedded in framing, camera angles, costume and editing.

Apply van Zoonen’s formula by counting instances of direct address, low-angle shots, and body fragmentation. Then consider whether the text reinforces or subverts patriarchal norms – a skill central to the ‘representation’ assessment objective.

9. Intersectionality – hooks’s Critical Lens |

Identity = Race × Gender × Class × Sexuality – Overlapping Systems of Oppression

bell hooks emphasises that representations cannot be understood through a single axis of identity. Race, gender, class and sexuality intersect to produce complex experiences of marginalisation or privilege. A media text that features a Black woman, for instance, may draw upon stereotypes linked to race and gender simultaneously – the ‘strong Black woman’ trope or the ‘hypersexualised’ caricature. hooks urges critics to interrogate the political function of these images and to ask who is responsible for creating them and for whose benefit.

In OCR analysis, bring an intersectional lens to your set products. Note if a character is defined only by one trait or if multiple identities are fleshed out authentically. This depth of analysis moves beyond simple stereotype spotting and meets the criteria for complex evaluation.

10. Media Ownership – Curran & Seaton’s Power Theorem |

Concentration of Ownership → Narrower Range of Voices → Undermined Democracy

James Curran and Jean Seaton’s work documents how ownership concentration in the hands of a few conglomerates restricts diversity. When a handful of global corporations control newspapers, broadcasters and online platforms, the range of opinions available shrinks. Profit motives skew content towards commercially safe, advertiser-friendly material. The theorem suggests that a genuinely democratic media landscape requires a plurality of independent voices and publicly funded alternatives to challenge the dominant market logic.

Apply this theorem to your OCR news and industry study. Map the ownership of a publication and its sister brands, then examine how its editorial line might reflect corporate interests. Connect this back to the ‘media contexts’ section – political, economic and cultural influences.

11. Digital Participation – Jenkins’s Convergence Formula |

Convergence Culture = Corporate Media + Grassroots Creativity → Participatory Audience

Henry Jenkins describes a world where old and new media collide, and where consumers are no longer passive. His ‘convergence culture’ formula depicts the flow of content across multiple platforms, the cooperation between media industries and fan communities, and the migratory behaviour of audiences who will go almost anywhere in search of the entertainment experiences they want. Fan fiction, remix videos and social media campaigns exemplify how ‘participatory culture’ blurs the boundary between producer and consumer, enabling collective intelligence to shape brand stories.

For set products like online, social and participatory media, use Jenkins to show how audiences are invited to co-create meaning. Discuss the tension between empowerment and exploitation: while users generate free marketing, they also gain visibility and community.

12. Regulatory Tensions – Livingstone & Lunt’s Citizen/Consumer Balance |

Regulation = Serving Citizens (Protection) ↔ Serving Consumers (Choice)

Sonia Livingstone and Peter Lunt highlight the inherent tension in media regulation: should regulators treat audiences primarily as citizens needing protection from harm, or as consumers who should enjoy maximum freedom of choice? This balancing act is constantly tested by emerging digital platforms, where harmful content spreads quickly yet heavy-handed regulation risks censorship. The debate intensifies around video-sharing platforms, age-rating systems and the role of state-funded public service media.

Use this formula when evaluating the effectiveness of bodies like Ofcom. Ask whether a specific regulatory decision prioritises citizen wellbeing or consumer demand. Reference the contrast between terrestrial TV’s strict watershed and minimal content moderation on some apps.
