SQA History Formula & Theorem Quick Reference Handbook | SQA

📚 SQA History Formula & Theorem Quick Reference Handbook | SQA

Just as mathematics relies on formulas to solve problems, SQA History requires a set of analytical “formulas” and “theorems” to interpret the past effectively. This handbook translates the essential skills of source evaluation, causation, significance, and comparison into repeatable mental models. It is designed for Year 11 candidates preparing for National 5 and Higher History assignments and exams. By internalising these patterns, you can transform a jumble of dates and facts into well‑structured, evidence‑based arguments.

1. The Provenance‑Content‑Context Formula |

Reliability = (Author’s Position × Purpose × Timing) + (Factual Accuracy × Typicality) ÷ Contradictory Evidence. This formula reminds you that no single factor determines source trustworthiness. You must weigh the origin (who, why, when) against the message and then test both against the wider historical context.

  • Author’s Position (Aₚ): Official, eyewitness, journalist, politician. Bias potential increases with proximity to power.
  • Purpose (Pᵤ): To inform, persuade, justify, or entertain. Persuasion reduces reliability unless cross‑referenced.
  • Timing (Tₗ): Contemporary vs. hindsight. A memoir written decades later may be distorted by memory or later agendas.

2. The Causation Chain Theorem |

An event E is never caused by a single factor. E = LT (Long‑Term) + ST (Short‑Term) + TR (Trigger). The historian’s job is to show how these layers connect. LT factors create the conditions; ST factors accelerate the change; the trigger is the spark that ignites the outcome.

E = ∑ (LT₁, LT₂, …) + ∑ (ST₁, ST₂, …) + TR

When explaining the outbreak of World War I, nationalism and imperialism are LT, the arms race and alliance diplomacy are ST, and the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand is TR. A high‑band answer always traces the chain, not just lists causes.

3. The Significance Matrix |

Historical significance is judged across five dimensions: Scale, Duration, Depth, Legacy, and Contemporary Recognition. Plot any event against these axes to determine why some events dominate narratives while others fade.

Dimension (维度) Question (自问) Example (示例)
Scale (规模) How many people/regions affected? (影响多少人或地区) The Black Death affected all of Europe.
Duration (持续时间) How long did the impact last? (影响持续多久) The Reformation permanently divided Christianity.
Depth (影响深度) How profoundly did it alter daily life or institutions? (多大程度改变了生活或制度) The Industrial Revolution transformed work and family structures.
Legacy (遗产) What traces remain today? (今天仍留有何种痕迹) The American Civil War shaped federal power and civil rights debates.
Recognition (认知) Did contemporaries see it as pivotal? (当时的人是否认为其关键) The 1963 March on Washington was immediately seen as historic.

4. The Change & Continuity Equation |

Total Change = Force of Innovation — Force of Tradition. No society transforms overnight. Even revolutions contain elements of the old regime. Your task is to balance the two sides and explain why some features persisted while others eroded.

Analyse the Russian Revolution: the monarchy was abolished (change) but the autocratic style of rule, now in Bolshevik hands, showed continuity. Similarly, the Scottish Reformation altered worship but many parish structures remained. A balanced answer notes both columns.

5. The Source Comparison Theorem |

Two sources S₁ and S₂ can be compared through Agreement, Disagreement, Point of View, and Omission. Strong comparison identifies not just what they say, but what each chooses to leave out. Omission is often the most revealing clue.

S₁ ⚖️ S₂ = (A ∪ D) + (P₁ ∩ P₂) + (O₁ + O₂)

  • A (Agreement): Both sources mention the harsh winter, confirming its severity.
  • D (Disagreement): S₁ blames the government, S₂ blames foreign interference.
  • P (Point of View): A factory owner’s account differs from a trade unionist’s — each sees a different ‘reality’.
  • O (Omission): A official report that omits casualty figures suggests a motive to conceal.

6. The Consequence Spectrum |

Consequences = Immediate + Medium‑Term + Long‑Term + Unintended. Unintended consequences (often the largest) are the hallmark of sophisticated analysis. Always ask: what did leaders expect, and what actually happened?

The 1832 Reform Act was intended to placate the middle class; its unintended consequence was to energise working‑class Chartism by showing that reform was possible but incomplete. The Treaty of Versailles aimed at peace but created resentment that fuelled WWII. Plot your case along the spectrum.

7. The Evidence Quality Index |

Every piece of evidence has a value V and a limitation L. V = (Specificity × Corroboration) + Proximity; L = (Bias × Incompleteness) + Representativeness Gap. An advanced answer weighs V against L rather than simply labelling a source ‘useful’ or ‘biased’.

A diary entry from a soldier at the Western Front has high proximity and specificity (high V), but low representativeness — one man’s experience cannot stand for the whole front (high L). A statistical table of munitions output has high representativeness but may lack specificity about human experience. You must state both sides.

8. The Historical Interpretation Model |

Interpretations diverge because historians select different facts, apply different frameworks, and are influenced by their own context. An interpretation I = Selected Evidence × Framework × Historiographical Context. When you discuss ‘different views’, identify which variable is at work.

For the causes of the Cold War, an orthodox historian selects Soviet aggression as key facts, applies a ‘containment’ framework, and writes in the context of the 1950s. A revisionist selects American economic imperialism, applies a Marxist framework, and reflects the 1960s–70s context. A post‑revisionist synthesises both. Recognising this model prevents crude ‘right or wrong’ judgements.

9. The Question Deconstruction Algorithm |

Before writing, run the question through three filters: Command Word → Content Bounds → Concept Expectation. Misreading the command word (e.g., ‘explain’ vs ‘evaluate’) is the most common cause of lost marks. Translate the question into your own criteria.

Command (指令) What it demands (要求) Weak vs Strong (弱 vs 强)
Describe (描述) Provide a detailed picture without judgement. Weak: listing facts. Strong: vivid, organised detail with precise terms.
Explain (解释) Show how and why, using causation chains. Weak: one‑cause answer. Strong: layered causation with connecting links.
Evaluate (评估) Weigh factors or interpretations, then reach a supported conclusion. Weak: a simple ‘I agree’ answer. Strong: balanced criteria, then a judgement with justification.
To what extent (多大程度) Acknowledge both sides, then decide degree. Weak: partial coverage. Strong: explicit ‘more than/less than’ conclusion with evidence.

10. The Revision Memory Palace Formula |

Long‑term retention = Active Recall × Spaced Repetition × Concrete Anchors. Don’t just re‑read notes. Convert your factual knowledge into numbered lists, timelines, and mind maps that attach to strong visual images. A famous event paired with a smell, sound, or picture becomes unforgettable.

For the Scottish Wars of Independence, create a mental journey through a castle: the gatehouse is the death of Alexander III, the great hall is the Battle of Stirling Bridge, the dungeon is Edward I’s crackdown. Re‑walk this palace daily. Self‑test by writing out the sequence without prompts — the essence of active recall.
