SQA Media Quick Formula & Theorem Handbook | SQA 媒体公式定理速查手册

📚 SQA Media Quick Formula & Theorem Handbook | SQA 媒体公式定理速查手册

This quick-reference handbook translates the essential theories and frameworks of the SQA Media course into concise ‘formulae’ and ‘theorems’. Each entry distils a key concept into a patterned statement, supported by brief explanation and application to media texts. Use it to revise narrative, semiotics, audience, representation and technical codes efficiently.

本速查手册将 SQA 媒体课程的核心理论与框架转化为简洁的‘公式’与‘定理’。每个条目都将关键概念浓缩为模式化陈述,辅以简短解释和在媒体文本中的应用。用它高效复习叙事、符号学、受众、表征与技术符码。

1. Semiotics: The Sign Theorem | 符号学:符号定理

Formula: Sign = Signifier + Signified
According to Saussure and Barthes, a sign is made up of a physical form (signifier) and the mental concept it triggers (signified). The connection is culturally constructed, not natural. Barthes adds a second layer of myth, where signs become ideological carriers.

公式:符号 = 能指 + 所指
根据索绪尔和巴特的理论,符号由物理形式(能指)与其触发的心理概念(所指)构成。这种联系是文化建构的,而非天然的。巴特增加了第二层神话,使符号成为意识形态载体。

Term Definition
Denotation Literal, obvious meaning
Connotation Associated, cultural meanings
Myth Dominant ideology presented as natural truth

When analysing a poster, identify the signifiers (colours, objects, poses) and then decode their connotations and any mythic dimension.

分析海报时,识别能指(颜色、物体、姿态),然后解读其内涵及任何神话维度。

2. Todorov’s Narrative Equilibrium Theorem | 托多罗夫叙事平衡定理

Formula: Equilibrium → Disruption → Recognition → Attempt to Repair → New Equilibrium
Todorov argues that all narratives move from a stable state, through a disruption, to a restored but transformed balance. This five-stage structure can be applied to almost every film, TV episode or news story to expose ideological resolution.

公式:平衡 → 破坏 → 察觉 → 尝试修复 → 新平衡
托多罗夫认为所有叙事都从稳定状态,经历破坏,到恢复但已转变的平衡。这一五阶段结构几乎可应用于每一部电影、电视剧集或新闻故事,以揭示意识形态的解决方式。

Example: In a superhero film, the city is safe (equilibrium), a villain attacks (disruption), the hero learns of the threat (recognition), battles ensue (repair), and peace returns but with changes (new equilibrium).

例:超级英雄电影中,城市安全(平衡),反派袭击(破坏),英雄得知威胁(察觉),战斗展开(修复),和平回归但已改变(新平衡)。

3. Propp’s Character Function Theorem | 普罗普角色功能定理

Formula: Narrative = Σ (Sphere of Action)i
Vladimir Propp identified seven broad character functions (spheres of action) in folk tales, which often appear in modern media: Villain, Donor, Helper, Princess (sought-for person) and her Father, Dispatcher, Hero, False Hero. A single character can embody multiple functions.

公式:叙事 = Σ (行动圈)i
弗拉基米尔·普罗普在民间故事中识别出七种广泛的角色功能(行动圈),经常出现在现代媒体中:反派、捐献者、帮手、公主(被追寻者)及其父亲、派遣者、英雄、伪英雄。一个角色可承担多种功能。

Function Typical role
Villain Creates disruption
Donor Gives the hero a magical object or clue
Helper Assists the hero
Princess/Father Reward and authority figure
Dispatcher Sends the hero on the quest
Hero Protagonist who restores equilibrium
False Hero Claims credit falsely

When analysing a film trailer, map characters onto Propp’s spheres to uncover the narrative engine.

分析电影预告片时,将角色映射到普罗普的行动圈,揭示叙事引擎。

4. Levi-Strauss’s Binary Opposition Theorem | 列维-斯特劳斯二元对立定理

Formula: Meaning = ConflictOpposites (A vs B)
Claude Levi-Strauss proposed that meaning in texts is produced through pairs of opposing concepts (good/evil, nature/technology, male/female). These oppositions structure narratives and encode ideology, often privileging one side over the other.

公式:意义 = 对立冲突 (A 对抗 B)
克劳德·列维-斯特劳斯提出,文本中的意义通过对立概念对产生(善/恶,自然/技术,男性/女性)。这些对立结构叙事并编码意识形态,往往使一方凌驾于另一方之上。

Identify the central binary in a news report, such as ‘civilization vs terrorism’, and ask which side is normalized and which is othered.

识别新闻报道中的核心二元对立,如‘文明 vs 恐怖主义’,并追问哪一方被常态化,哪一方被异化。

5. Hall’s Encoding/Decoding Theorem | 霍尔的编码/解码定理

Formula: Media Meaning = Encoded Message (by producer) → Decoded Reading (by audience)
Stuart Hall argued that producers encode meanings into texts using shared codes, but audiences do not passively accept them. They decode according to their own social contexts, producing three possible readings: dominant (preferred), negotiated, or oppositional.

公式:媒体意义 = 编码信息(制作者)→ 解码阅听(受众)
斯图亚特·霍尔提出,制作者使用共享符码将意义编码进文本,但受众并非被动接受。他们根据自身社会语境解码,产生三种可能的阅读:主导-霸权(偏好式)、协商式或对抗式。

When studying a controversial advertising campaign, examine how different audience segments might read the same image.

研究有争议的广告活动时,考察不同受众群体如何解读同一图像。

6. Uses and Gratifications Theorem | 使用与满足定理

Formula: Media Use = F(Information, Personal Identity, Social Integration, Entertainment)
Blumler and Katz’s theory shifts focus from ‘what media do to people’ to ‘what people do with media’. Audiences actively select media to satisfy needs: surveillance (information), personal identity, personal relationships/social interaction, and diversion (escapism).

公式:媒体使用 = F(信息,个人身份,社会整合,娱乐)
布卢姆勒与卡茨的理论将焦点从‘媒体对人们做了什么’转向‘人们用媒体做什么’。受众主动选择媒体以满足需求:监视(信息)、个人身份、人际关系/社会互动,以及消遣(逃避)。

A teenager using Instagram might fulfil identity (curating self-image), social integration (connecting with friends), and diversion (scrolling for fun).

一名青少年使用 Instagram 可能满足身份(策划自我形象)、社会整合(与朋友联系)和消遣(刷屏娱乐)的需求。

7. Reception Theory (Aberrant Decoding) | 接受理论(变异解码)

Formula: Dominant, Negotiated, Oppositional (DNO) Reading Model
Building on Hall, reception theory examines how actual audiences interpret texts. The dominant reading accepts the producer’s intended meaning; the negotiated reading partly accepts but modifies it; the oppositional reading rejects it entirely, often from a critical position.

公式:主导式、协商式、对抗式(DNO)阅读模型
基于霍尔的理论,接受理论考察实际受众如何解读文本。主导-霸权式阅读接受制作者的意图意义;协商式阅读部分接受但加以修改;对抗式阅读则完全拒绝,通常来自批判性立场。

Apply the DNO model to a political broadcast: a government health message may be accepted by some (dominant), questioned by sceptics (negotiated), and rejected by activists (oppositional).

将 DNO 模型应用于政治广播:政府的健康信息可能被一些人接受(主导式),受怀疑者质疑(协商式),被活动家拒绝(对抗式)。

8. Representation Formula | 表征公式

Formula: Media Representation = Selection + Construction + Anchoring
Media texts do not present reality directly; they select certain aspects, construct a version of the world, and anchor meaning through captions, music, or juxtaposition. Stereotype formulae reduce people to a few traits and amplify them for rapid audience recognition.

公式:媒体表征 = 选择 + 建构 + 锚定
媒体文本并不直接呈现现实;它们选择某些方面,建构世界的一个版本,并通过标题、音乐或并置锚定意义。刻板印象公式将人简化为几个特征并放大,以便受众快速识别。

Gender representation often follows a binary formula: masculine = active, rational, public sphere; feminine = passive, emotional, domestic sphere. Many modern texts subvert this.

性别表征常遵循二元公式:男性化 = 主动、理性、公共领域;女性化 = 被动、情感、家庭领域。许多现代文本颠覆了这一点。

9. Camera and Editing Formulae | 摄像与剪辑公式

Shot Scale Formula: ECU > CU > MS > LS > ELS
Shot scales carry conventional meanings. Extreme close-up (ECU) signifies intense emotion or detail; close-up (CU) intimacy; medium shot (MS) neutrality; long shot (LS) context; extreme long shot (ELS) establishes environment or isolation. This is a visual grammar readers learn to decode automatically.

景别公式:特写 > 近景 > 中景 > 全景 > 远景
景别承载着约定俗成的意义。大特写代表强烈情感或细节;近景代表亲密;中景代表中立;全景提供背景;远景建立环境或孤立感。这是一种观众自动学会解读的视觉语法。

Continuity Editing Theorem: 180° Rule + Shot-Reverse-Shot + Match on Action = Invisible Storytelling
Classical Hollywood continuity editing creates seamless time and space. The 180-degree rule maintains consistent screen direction; shot-reverse-shot constructs conversation; match on action links movements across cuts. Together they produce a ‘transparent’ narrative that hides the construction process.

连续性剪辑定理:180° 规则 + 正反打 + 动作匹配 = 无形叙事
经典好莱坞连续性剪辑创造出无缝的时间与空间。180 度规则保持一致的屏幕方向;正反打镜头构建对话;动作匹配跨剪切连接动作。它们共同制造出一种‘透明’的叙事,隐藏建构过程。

10. Mise-en-scène Formula | 场面调度公式

Formula: Mise-en-scène = Setting + Lighting + Costume + Figure Expression & Movement
Everything placed before the camera contributes to meaning. High-key lighting suggests openness, low-key lighting mystery. Colour palettes encode mood and genre. Costume instantly signals character status and group membership. These elements are carefully orchestrated for connotative effect.

公式:场面调度 = 场景 + 灯光 + 服装 + 人物表情与动作
置于镜头前的一切都贡献意义。高调照明暗示开放,低调照明暗示神秘。色彩调色板编码情绪与类型。服装即时传递角色地位与群体归属。这些元素被精心编排以产生内涵效果。

In a horror film, low-key lighting, a decaying setting, and tattered costumes work together to construct a threatening atmosphere.

在恐怖片中,低调照明、破败的场景和褴褛的服装共同建构出威胁性氛围。

11. Audience Segmentation Theorem | 受众细分定理

Formula: Target Audience = Demographics (age, gender, class) + Psychographics (values, lifestyle, personality)
Media industries slice audiences into groups to tailor content and advertising. Demographics provide the skeleton; psychographics (e.g., aspirers, reformers, strugglers) add motivational depth. The Young and Rubicam 4Cs model is a common psychographic tool.

公式:目标受众 = 人口统计学(年龄、性别、阶级) + 心理描绘(价值观、生活方式、个性)
媒体产业将受众切分为群体以定制内容和广告。人口统计学提供骨架;心理描绘图(如抱负者、改革者、挣扎者)增加动机深度。扬·罗必凯 4Cs 模型是常见的心理描绘工具。

4Cs Type Core driver
Mainstreamers Security, belonging
Aspirers Status, appearance
Succeeders Control, power
Reformers Enlightenment, freedom

When a streaming platform recommends content, it uses a psychographic algorithm to match ‘aspirers’ with luxury lifestyle shows and ‘reformers’ with documentaries.

流媒体平台推荐内容时,运用心理描绘算法为‘抱负者’匹配奢华生活方式节目,为‘改革者’匹配纪录片。

12. Genre Formula | 类型公式

Formula: Genre = Repetition + Variation
Steve Neale argues genre relies on a balance between familiar conventions (repetition) and novelty (variation). Audiences expect certain icons, narratives and styles, but genres must evolve to stay relevant. Hybridity mixes two or more genre formulas to create new markets.

公式:类型 = 重复 + 变体
史蒂夫·尼尔认为类型依赖于熟悉惯例(重复)与新颖性(变体)之间的平衡。受众期待特定的图标、叙事和风格,但类型必须演化以保持相关性。类型混合将两种或多种类型公式融合,创造新市场。

A romantic comedy follows the repetition of ‘meet-cute, obstacle, happy ending’, but variations in setting or character twist the formula to keep it fresh.

浪漫喜剧遵循‘邂逅、障碍、幸福结局’的重复,但场景或角色的变体扭转公式以保持新鲜感。
