1. Birth Rate & Total Fertility Rate |

The crude birth rate (CBR) measures the number of live births per 1000 people in a given year. It is a fundamental demographic indicator used to compare fertility across populations.

Birth Rate = (Number of live births / Total population) × 1000

While the birth rate gives a general picture, the Total Fertility Rate (TFR) provides a more refined measure: the average number of children a woman would have during her reproductive years, assuming current age-specific fertility rates remain constant. A TFR of about 2.1 is considered replacement level in developed countries.

2. Rate of Natural Increase |

The Rate of Natural Increase (RNI) shows how fast a population is growing (or shrinking) purely from births and deaths, excluding migration. It is often expressed as a percentage.

RNI (%) = [(Births − Deaths) / Total population] × 100

Alternatively, you can calculate it directly from birth and death rates: RNI (per 1000) = Birth rate − Death rate. Then divide by 10 to convert to a percentage. A positive RNI indicates natural increase, while a negative RNI signals natural decrease.

3. Population Density |

Population density describes how crowded an area is. It is a simple but essential concept for understanding settlement patterns, resource pressure, and service provision.

Population Density = Total population / Land area (km²)

Be careful with units: land area should be in square kilometres (km²). For very small areas, you might see persons per hectare; 1 km² = 100 hectares. Always check which unit the exam question expects.

4. Dependency Ratio |

The dependency ratio compares the economically dependent population (young and old) with the working-age population. It is a useful indicator of the pressure on the productive segment of society.

Dependency Ratio (%) = [(Population aged 0−14 + Population aged 65+) / Population aged 15−64] × 100

A high dependency ratio, common in many developing countries with youthful populations, can strain education and healthcare systems. An ageing population in developed countries creates a different type of dependency pressure.

5. Sex Ratio | 性别比

The sex ratio measures the number of males per 100 females in a population. It helps reveal patterns of gender imbalance, often influenced by migration, birth preferences, or conflict.

Sex Ratio = (Number of males / Number of females) × 100

A ratio above 100 means there are more males than females; below 100 indicates more females. The global average is roughly 101–102 males per 100 females at birth, but this varies regionally.

6. Level of Urbanisation |

Urbanisation level is the percentage of a country’s total population living in urban areas. It is a key measure of development and internal migration trends.

Urbanisation Level (%) = (Urban population / Total population) × 100

The rate of urbanisation – how fast this percentage is growing over time – is just as important as the level itself. Rapid urbanisation in emerging economies often brings challenges such as housing shortages and infrastructure strain.

7. Map Scale and Distance |

Map scales allow you to convert a measurement on a map to the actual distance on the ground. For Cambridge Geography, you must be able to use both linear (graphic) scales and ratio (representative) scales.

Actual distance = Map distance × Scale factor

For a 1:50 000 map, 1 cm on the map represents 50 000 cm (or 0.5 km) on the ground. When using a linear scale, simply mark the map distance on the edge of a piece of paper and read off the ground distance. Always express your answer in km or metres, and show the unit.

8. Area Calculation on Maps |

Estimating area from a map is a core practical skill. Common methods include counting grid squares (each small square on a 1:50 000 map is typically 1 km² after scale conversion) or applying geometric formulas for regular shapes.

Shape 图形

Formula 公式

Rectangle 矩形

Area = length × width 面积 = 长 × 宽

Triangle 三角形

Area = ½ × base × height 面积 = ½ × 底 × 高

Irregular area

Count full grid squares + ½ partial squares

All map distances must be converted to ground distances before calculating the area. For irregular areas, tracing the shape onto graph paper and counting squares is a reliable technique in the exam.

9. Gradient Calculation |

Gradient measures the steepness of a slope, often used when analysing contour lines on a topographic map. It compares the vertical rise to the horizontal distance.

Gradient = Vertical interval (rise) / Horizontal equivalent (run)

Both measurements must be in the same units. A gradient is typically expressed as a ratio, e.g. 1:12, meaning a 1 m rise for every 12 m horizontally. You may also see it as a fraction or percentage. On a 1:50 000 map, use contour lines to find the height difference, and the scale to find the horizontal distance.

10. River Discharge |

River discharge is the volume of water flowing past a cross‑section of a river channel per unit of time. It is fundamental to understanding flood risk, erosion, and water resource management.

Q = A × v

Q is discharge in cubic metres per second (m³/s), A is the cross‑sectional area of the river (m²), and v is the average flow velocity (m/s). To find A, multiply the average channel width by the average depth. In fieldwork, you may measure velocity with a float and distance with a tape measure.

11. Temperature and Precipitation Calculations |

Climate statistics help geographers describe and compare weather patterns. Two of the most common calculations are temperature range and mean precipitation.

Temperature Range = Tₘₐₓ − Tₘᵢₙ

The annual temperature range is the difference between the highest and lowest mean monthly temperatures. Mean annual precipitation is simply the total rainfall for the year divided by 12. When analysing climate graphs, always state the units (°C for temperature, mm for precipitation) and identify the months of maximum and minimum values.

12. Human Development Index (HDI) |

The Human Development Index (HDI) is a composite indicator created by the United Nations. It combines health, education, and standard of living into a single value between 0 and 1, making cross‑country comparisons more holistic than income alone.

HDI = ∛(I_health × I_education × I_income)

HDI = ∛(健康指数 × 教育指数 × 收入指数)

  • I_health uses life expectancy at birth.

  • I_education combines mean years of schooling and expected years of schooling.

  • I_income uses Gross National Income (GNI) per capita, adjusted to reflect diminishing marginal utility. It is expressed as a logarithm to ensure that income increases above a certain threshold have less impact on HDI.

Each sub-index is normalised on a 0–1 scale before the geometric mean is calculated. A higher HDI indicates higher human development. In the Cambridge syllabus, you need to understand how HDI is calculated, interpret it, and discuss its advantages and limitations compared with single measures such as GDP.
