1. Cell Structure and Function |

In SQA exams, labelling and comparing plant, animal, fungal and bacterial cells is a high-frequency task. A common mistake is confusing the cell wall with the cell membrane: all cells have a cell membrane, but only plants, fungi and bacteria possess a cell wall. Another persistent error is assuming bacteria have a nucleus; instead, they contain a single circular chromosome and often plasmids. When shown a diagram, look for chloroplasts and a large permanent vacuole to identify a plant cell. Yeast is a fungus – its cell wall is made of chitin, not cellulose.

A frequent misconception is that plant cells lack mitochondria because they photosynthesise. In reality, plants require mitochondria for aerobic respiration to release metabolic energy, so both chloroplasts and mitochondria are present in photosynthesising cells. Bacteria, however, do not have mitochondria; their respiration occurs on the cell membrane.

2. DNA and Protein Synthesis | DNA

A classic exam pitfall is mixing up DNA replication with protein synthesis. DNA replication copies the entire genome before cell division; protein synthesis transcribes and translates a single gene to build a polypeptide. Common errors include writing thymine (T) in mRNA codons instead of uracil (U). For a DNA template strand such as TAC GGA, the correct mRNA is AUG CCU. Students also forget that transcription occurs inside the nucleus and translation at ribosomes in the cytoplasm.
