AQA A-level

2. Key Practitioners and Their Methods |

Konstantin Stanislavski pioneered naturalism and developed the ‘system’, which aims to create believable characters through psychological truth. Key concepts include the ‘magic if’, where actors ask ‘what if?’ to emotionally invest in circumstances; ‘objectives’ and ‘super-objective’ that drive character actions; and ’emotional memory’ to draw on personal experience. Stanislavski’s later work emphasised the Method of Physical Actions, connecting psychology with physical movement.

Bertolt Brecht rejected naturalism in favour of Epic Theatre, which sought to provoke social change by making the audience critically aware rather than emotionally absorbed. He employed the Verfremdungseffekt (alienation effect) to distance the audience, using techniques such as direct address, placards, narration, and gestus (a clear physical expression of social relationship). Brecht wanted spectators to question the status quo and see theatre as a tool for political education.
