📚 Year 12 AQA Philosophy: Core Knowledge Points Reviewed | AQA 哲学 Year 12 核心知识点梳理

The Year 12 AQA Philosophy course lays the foundation for A-level study by exploring two central branches: epistemology (the theory of knowledge) and moral philosophy. This article reviews the essential concepts, arguments and thinkers you need to master for the exam, from the tripartite definition of knowledge to the three major ethical theories. Each point is explained in both English and Chinese to reinforce your understanding.

1. What is Knowledge? The Tripartite View |

From Plato’s Theaetetus, knowledge is traditionally defined as justified true belief (JTB). For any proposition p, a subject S knows that p if and only if p is true, S believes that p, and S is justified in believing that p.

This analysis requires all three conditions simultaneously. Without truth, it is merely a mistaken belief; without belief, you cannot claim knowledge; without justification, it is no more than a lucky guess. Critics later questioned whether these conditions are sufficient.

2. Gettier Problems |

In 1963, Edmund Gettier published two counterexamples showing that JTB is not sufficient for knowledge. In the first case, Smith has strong evidence that Jones will get the job and believes Jones owns a Ford. From that he deduces ‘The man who will get the job owns a Ford.’ Unbeknownst to Smith, he himself gets the job and, by chance, he also owns a Ford. Smith’s belief is justified, true, but intuitively not knowledge because it depends on a false lemma.

The second case involves someone who sees a clock that happens to have stopped at the correct time 24 hours earlier. The belief formed is justified and true, but not knowledge. These problems spurred attempts to amend JTB, such as adding a no-false-lemma condition or replacing justification with a different connection to truth.

3. Reliabilism as a Response |

Reliabilism, advanced by Alvin Goldman, claims that what matters is whether the belief was produced by a reliable cognitive process. A process is reliable if it tends to yield true beliefs. For example, perception under normal conditions is reliable; wishful thinking is not. On this view, S knows that p if p is true, S believes that p, and S’s belief was caused by a reliable method.

This neatly handles Gettier cases because the false lemma undermines reliability. However, reliabilism faces the ‘new evil demon’ problem: a brain in a vat fed deceptive experiences seems to have justified beliefs, yet its processes are unreliable. Reliabilism then denies knowledge where intuition says there is justification.

4. Virtue Epistemology |

Virtue epistemology, associated with Ernest Sosa and Linda Zagzebski, shifts focus to the knower’s intellectual character. Knowledge is true belief that results from the exercise of intellectual virtues, such as careful observation, open-mindedness, and good reasoning. A belief is apt when its being true is creditable to the agent’s competence.

This approach also addresses Gettier: in the clock case, the truth of the belief is not due to the agent’s ability but to luck, so it is not knowledge. Virtue epistemology is often combined with a broader focus on epistemic responsibility, ensuring that the knower is not merely a passive recorder but an active agent in pursuit of truth.

5. Direct Realism |

In the philosophy of perception, direct realism holds that we perceive physical objects directly, without any intermediaries. When you see a tree, you are immediately aware of the tree itself, which exists mind-independently. This common-sense view is supported by the immediacy of perceptual experience.

However, direct realism is challenged by illusions (a straight stick looks bent in water), hallucinations (seeing something that is not there), and perceptual variation (the same object looks different under different lighting). Critics say these phenomena show we are not aware of objects directly; we must be aware of some mental representation.

6. Indirect Realism |

Indirect realism, most famously defended by John Locke, claims we perceive mind-dependent sense-data (or ideas), which represent mind-independent physical objects. The physical object causes sense-data in our minds, and these are what we are directly aware of. Locke distinguished primary qualities (shape, size, motion) that resemble the object, from secondary qualities (colour, taste, smell) that are powers to produce sensations in us.

The major problem for indirect realism is the ‘veil of perception’: if we only ever perceive sense-data, how can we know that physical objects exist and that our sense-data resemble them? This leads to scepticism about the external world. George Berkeley would later push this reasoning toward idealism.

7. Berkeley’s Idealism |

Berkeley rejected the existence of mind-independent matter entirely. His principle esse est percipi (to be is to be perceived) asserts that physical objects are collections of ideas, and they exist only insofar as they are perceived by a mind. The table in your room exists because it is perceived by you, or, to explain its continued existence when no human is looking, by God.

Berkeley argues that we cannot conceive of a mind-independent object because the very act of conception occurs in a mind. He also uses the argument from perceptual relativity to dissolve the primary/secondary quality distinction, claiming all qualities are mind-dependent. Idealism thus avoids scepticism by redefining reality, but it faces the challenge of explaining consistent order without material substance.

8. Metaethics: Realism vs Anti-Realism |

Moral realism holds that moral properties exist mind-independently and moral judgements can be true or false. Cognitivism in metaethics maintains that moral statements express beliefs that are truth-apt. Ethical naturalists (e.g., utilitarians) argue moral facts are natural facts (e.g., about pleasure), while intuitionists like G.E. Moore claim we grasp non-natural moral properties through intuition.

Moral anti-realism denies such mind-independent moral facts. Emotivism (A.J. Ayer) says moral statements merely express emotions (‘Boo!’ or ‘Hurrah!’) and are not truth-apt. Prescriptivism (R.M. Hare) claims they are universalised commands: ‘Killing is wrong’ means ‘Do not kill!’. Both are forms of non-cognitivism, rejecting that moral language functions to describe reality.

9. Utilitarianism |

Utilitarianism is a consequentialist ethical theory: the right action is the one that maximises utility, usually defined as happiness or pleasure. Jeremy Bentham’s hedonic calculus measures pleasure by seven factors: intensity, duration, certainty, propinquity, fecundity, purity, and extent. He famously claimed that, quantity of pleasure being equal, pushpin is as good as poetry.

John Stuart Mill refined utilitarianism by introducing the distinction between higher and lower pleasures. Intellectual and moral pleasures are qualitatively superior to mere bodily pleasures. Mill argued ‘It is better to be a human being dissatisfied than a pig satisfied.’ Rule utilitarianism (act according to rules that generally maximise happiness) responds to objections that act utilitarianism permits unjust actions.

10. Kantian Deontology |

Immanuel Kant’s deontological ethics is based on duty, not consequences. The moral worth of an action depends on its being done from a good will, in accordance with the categorical imperative. The first formulation of the categorical imperative is: ‘Act only on that maxim through which you can at the same time will that it should become a universal law.’

The second formulation commands us to ‘Act in such a way that you treat humanity, whether in your own person or in another, always as an end and never merely as a means.’ This captures the idea of respect for persons. Kant then identifies perfect duties (e.g., do not lie) that admit no exception, and imperfect duties (e.g., develop your talents) that allow latitude.

11. Aristotle’s Virtue Ethics |

Aristotle’s ethics focuses on character rather than duty or consequences. The ultimate good for humans is eudaimonia, often translated as flourishing or living well. Through his function argument, Aristotle claims that the human function is rational activity in accordance with virtue; a good human lives a life of rational virtuous activity.

Virtues are stable dispositions to choose the mean between extremes of excess and deficiency, relative to the situation. Courage, for instance, is the mean between rashness and cowardice. Practical wisdom (phronesis) enables the agent to perceive the right mean. Aristotle’s list includes moral virtues (justice, temperance) and intellectual virtues (wisdom, understanding).

12. Applied Ethics: Core Issues |

In the moral philosophy exam, you may be asked to apply theories to practical issues such as lying, stealing, or eating animals. A utilitarian would assess whether telling a lie or stealing a loaf maximises overall happiness; an act-utilitarian might permit a lie to save a life, while a rule-utilitarian would stress the long-term damage of undermining truth-telling norms.

Kantian ethics forbids lying absolutely because if everyone lied, trust would collapse, making the maxim of lying self-defeating. Similarly, stealing treats the property owner merely as a means. Virtue ethics asks what a virtuous person would do: would honesty or compassion be the most relevant virtue in a given dilemma? Each theory reveals different dimensions of practical moral reasoning.
