1. Understand the Assessment Objectives (AOs) Thoroughly |

The OCR specification is built around four equally weighted Assessment Objectives, each carrying 25% of your total mark. AO1 demands you develop ideas through investigations informed by contextual sources and demonstrate critical understanding. AO2 asks you to explore and refine work by experimenting with media and processes. AO3 focuses on recording observations and insights, while AO4 requires presenting a personal, meaningful final response. Top scorers don’t just know these definitions; they actively design every page to hit multiple AOs simultaneously.

AO Core Requirement Marks
AO1 Develop ideas through sustained and focused investigations, demonstrating analytical and critical understanding 25%
AO2 Refine work by exploring ideas, selecting and experimenting with appropriate media, materials, techniques and processes 25%
AO3 Record ideas, observations and insights relevant to intentions as work progresses 25%
AO4 Present a personal and meaningful response that realises intentions and demonstrates understanding of visual language 25%

Four assessment objectives equally shape your final grade. In practice, this means your sketchbook must be a live record of investigation, experimentation, observation and resolution, not a collection of pretty pictures.

2. Start With a Powerful, Personal Theme |

Your chosen theme or starting point is the engine for the whole project. I cannot stress enough the importance of picking something you genuinely care about – a concept, a memory, a social issue or even a material obsession. When you are emotionally invested, the sustained focus demanded by AO1 becomes natural, and your personal voice shines through in AO4. Avoid overly broad topics like ‘nature’; instead, narrow down to ‘the resilience of urban weeds in cracked pavements’ – specificity creates depth.

3. Artist Research That Transcends Copying |

Too many students treat artist research as a tick-box exercise: they print an image, copy it loosely and write a generic biography. To score high in AO1, you must analyse the artist’s use of formal elements, techniques and concepts. Then you must make a personal connection. I always dedicated a double page spread to an artist, where one side analysed composition, colour, texture and meaning, and the other side showed my experimental response in the artist’s style but with my own subject matter. This bridges AO1 and AO2 beautifully.

4. Build a Rich Observational Drawing Foundation |

First-hand observation is the bedrock of AO3. Your portfolio must include extensive direct studies: primary photographs, life drawing, still life setups related to your theme, and detailed tonal studies. I recommend spending at least two weeks purely on observational work before any abstraction. Use a range of media – graphite, charcoal, biro, coloured pencil, fineliner – and annotate what you learned about texture, light and form each time. This raw material will fuel every later stage.

5. Embrace Relentless Experimentation |

AO2 rewards risk-taking. Do not settle for the first technique that works. In my sketchbook, I tested the same image in at least five different treatments: monotype printing, ink bleach, wax resist, digital manipulation and stitch. Not every experiment succeeds – and that’s the point. A failed test accompanied by an annotation explaining why it didn’t work and how you will adjust proves evaluative thinking, which directly boosts your AO2 and AO3 marks. Let your sketchbook be messy, exploratory and vibrant with trials.

6. Develop a Coherent Personal Response |

The road from initial inspiration to final outcome must be clearly mapped. Examiners look for a clear narrative thread. I used a ‘design development’ section where I combined my best experiments and artist influences into a series of compositional sketches, each refined after feedback. I included maquettes, colour palettes and annotated design sheets that justified every decision. This demonstrates intentional AO4 progression, not a lucky final piece.

7. Annotate Critically, Not Descriptively |

Annotations are not captions. They are where you demonstrate critical understanding. Avoid phrases like ‘I like this because it looks nice’. Instead, ask yourself: What visual problem was I solving? How does this relate to a specific artist’s practice? What material quality surprised me, and why? I wrote in short, reflective bursts using subject-specific vocabulary – ‘The gestural line quality creates a sense of urgency that resonates with Marlene Dumas’s psychological portraits’ – and always linked back to my theme. This transforms AO3 and AO1 into gold.

8. Master Time Management for Component 1 | 精通 Component 1 的时间管理

The portfolio (60% in AS) runs across the entire year, but many students lose momentum mid-term. I broke my project into phases: Weeks 1–3 research and observation, Weeks 4–6 artist studies and initial experiments, Weeks 7–9 development and refinement, Week 10 final piece planning, Weeks 11–12 final outcome and evaluation. I set mini-deadlines every Friday. This prevented last-minute panic and ensured every AO was consistently addressed.

9. Present Your Portfolio With Professional Polish |

Presentation matters because it influences the examiner’s first impression and readability. I used consistent fonts for annotations, clean cut edges, and a black mounting paper background to unify disparate works. Every photograph of 3D work or large-scale pieces was taken in natural daylight against a neutral background. I also scanned small works at 300 dpi. A coherent visual flow – no sudden stylistic jumps – guided the examiner smoothly through my journey.

10. Actively Seek and Use Feedback |

I made a habit of booking a 5-minute chat with my teacher every week, armed with specific questions: ‘Do these two colour studies read as the same mood?’, ‘Is my artist link clear enough here?’. I recorded the feedback directly on the relevant page in green pen and then showed a response – maybe a mini redraft – on the facing page. This dialogue with teacher input visibly demonstrates AO3’s ‘reflecting critically on progress’ and elevates your mark.

11. Maintain a Visual Diary Beyond the Sketchbook |

My phone’s camera roll and a small pocket notebook became a raw idea bank. I snapped interesting textures, colour combinations from street signage, or light patterns during my commute and stuck them in dedicated ‘seed pages’. These spontaneous records fed AO3 and often sparked unique starting points for experiments. A constant, low-pressure habit of collecting visual inspiration keeps creative block at bay and shows genuine engagement beyond the classroom.

12. Prepare For the Externally Set Task Like a Pro |

The Component 2 exam paper lands with a range of starting points. I selected my chosen question within 24 hours and then treated the preparatory period as a compressed version of my successful Component 1 process: immediate visual mind maps, targeted observational studies, swift artist explorations, two rounds of fast experimentation and a resolved design sheet before the 10-hour supervised session. During the timed period, I stuck strictly to my plan and left the last 20 minutes for evaluation notes. Confidence comes from preparation, and my sketchbook evidence proved that.
