📚 Year 12 OCR Sociology: Summer Preparation and Bridging Course | Year 12 OCR
Welcome to the Year 12 OCR Sociology bridging programme. This summer preparation course is designed to introduce you to the foundational concepts, theories and debates that form the backbone of the A Level specification. By working through these materials, you will build the sociological imagination needed to question everyday life and examine the structures that shape human behaviour.
1. What is Sociology? An Introduction to the Sociological Imagination |
Sociology is the systematic study of society, social groups and social interaction. Rather than accepting the world at face value, sociologists use what C. Wright Mills called the “sociological imagination” to connect private troubles with public issues. For example, unemployment experienced by one person is a personal trouble, but when millions are out of work, it becomes a public issue rooted in economic structure.
OCR Sociology encourages you to examine how factors such as class, gender, ethnicity and age influence life chances. Sociology is not about opinion; it is about using evidence and theory to understand patterns of inequality, identity and social change.
2. Core Concepts: Socialisation, Culture and Identity |
Three concepts lie at the heart of the OCR specification: socialisation, culture and identity. Socialisation is the lifelong process through which individuals learn the norms, values and roles of their society. It is often divided into primary socialisation, which takes place in the family during early childhood, and secondary socialisation, which occurs through institutions such as schools, peer groups and the media.
Culture refers to the whole way of life of a particular society or group, including language, beliefs, customs and material objects. Identity, meanwhile, is how individuals see and define themselves, and how others see them. Sociologists are interested in how identities are shaped by social structures and interaction.
3. Major Theoretical Perspectives |
Sociology is built on competing theoretical perspectives that offer different explanations for how society works. The main perspectives you will encounter in Year 12 are functionalism, Marxism, feminism and interactionism. The table below summarises their key features.
|---|---|---|---|
| Functionalism / 功能主义 | Durkheim, Parsons | Society is a system of interconnected parts that work together to maintain stability. Shared norms and values create social order. | Overemphasises consensus, ignores conflict and rapid social change. |
| Marxism / 马克思主义 | Marx, Althusser | Society is structured by class conflict between the bourgeoisie (ruling class) and the proletariat (working class). Institutions serve the interests of the ruling class. | Overly deterministic, neglects other forms of inequality such as gender and ethnicity. |
| Feminism / 女性主义 | Oakley, Walby | Society is patriarchal, meaning men hold power and women experience systematic disadvantage. Gender inequality is the central conflict. | Different feminist strands disagree; early feminism sometimes neglected differences among women. |
| Interactionism / 互动论 | Mead, Becker | Focuses on micro-level interactions, meaning and labelling. Society is constructed through everyday interpretation and negotiation. | Can overlook larger structural forces like class and power. |
These perspectives will reappear throughout the course, so it is vital to understand their basic assumptions before you start the term. Try applying each lens to a familiar institution, such as school, to see how they generate different interpretations.
4. Research Methods: How Sociologists Study Society |
Sociological knowledge is empirical; it relies on evidence collected through rigorous methods. OCR Sociology requires you to understand both quantitative methods, such as questionnaires, structured interviews and official statistics, and qualitative methods, such as participant observation, unstructured interviews and personal documents. Each method has its own strengths and limitations in terms of validity, reliability, representativeness and ethics.
You will also explore the difference between positivism and interpretivism. Positivists favour quantitative data and seek to discover causal laws, much like natural scientists. Interpretivists argue that human behaviour cannot be understood without exploring the meanings individuals attach to actions, thus they favour qualitative approaches. The debate continues, and understanding both positions is essential for evaluating sociological studies.
5. Primary and Secondary Socialisation |
Primary socialisation usually occurs within the family in the first years of life. Through this process, children acquire basic language, norms and values. Functionalists such as Parsons argue that the family acts as a “personality factory”, shaping the child’s character so that they can fit into society. Marxists, on the other hand, view primary socialisation as transmitting ruling-class ideology.
Secondary socialisation involves agencies such as education, peer groups, religion and the mass media. Each agency transmits particular norms and values. For instance, schools teach the hidden curriculum — the unspoken rules about punctuality, obedience and competition — which functionalists believe prepares young people for the world of work. Interactionists, however, emphasise that pupils are active agents who can negotiate and resist these messages.
6. Culture, Subcultures and Cultural Diversity |
In sociology, culture encompasses both material elements (clothing, technology, food) and non-material elements (beliefs, values, language). OCR students need to explore how culture varies across time and place, and why cultural diversity exists within the same society. High culture, popular culture, folk culture and global culture are all relevant categories.
Subcultures are groups within a larger culture that share distinctive norms, values and lifestyles. Examples include youth subcultures such as punks or goths, as well as occupational or ethnic subcultures. Sociologists from the Centre for Contemporary Cultural Studies (CCCS) in Birmingham argued that spectacular youth subcultures represented symbolic resistance to capitalism. Postmodernists, however, point out that today’s subcultures are more fluid and style-based rather than rooted in class conflict.
7. Identity Formation: The Self and Society |
Identity is not something we are born with; it is socially constructed through interaction and socialisation. Charles Cooley introduced the concept of the “looking-glass self”, suggesting that we develop our self-concept based on how we imagine others see us. George Herbert Mead developed the theory of the “I” and the “me”: the “I” is the unsocialised, impulsive self, while the “me” is the socialised self that internalises the attitudes of the wider community.
Erving Goffman used a dramaturgical model, arguing that we perform different roles depending on the social setting, much like actors on a stage. Identity can also be collective, such as national, ethnic or gender identity. A key OCR topic is how identities are influenced by social class, gender, ethnicity, sexuality and disability.
8. Introduction to the Sociology of Families and Households |
The family is a central topic in Year 12 OCR Sociology. You need to distinguish between a “family” (a group of people related by blood, marriage or adoption) and a “household” (one person living alone or a group sharing accommodation). Over the past century, family forms have diversified considerably. We now see nuclear families, extended families, lone-parent families, reconstituted families and same-sex families.
Functionalists like Murdock argued that the nuclear family is universal because it performs four essential functions: sexual regulation, reproduction, socialisation of the young and economic provision. Marxists counter that the family exists to sustain capitalism by providing unpaid domestic labour and transmitting private property. Feminists highlight the often patriarchal nature of family life, pointing out the unequal division of domestic work and emotional labour.
9. Introduction to the Sociology of Education |
Sociologists study education to understand how formal schooling affects individuals and society. In the OCR course, you will explore the role and functions of education, patterns of educational achievement by class, gender and ethnicity, and the relationship between education and the economy.
Functionalists see education as a meritocratic institution that sifts and sorts individuals according to ability, providing equal opportunity. The Marxist perspective, however, argues that education reproduces class inequality through the hidden curriculum and the correspondence principle. Interactionists, such as Rosenthal and Jacobson, demonstrated how teacher labelling can create a self-fulfilling prophecy, affecting pupil performance.
10. Bridging Activity: Summer Reading and Viewing |
To hit the ground running in September, immerse yourself in sociological thinking over the summer. Start with a readable classic like “The Sociology Book” (DK) or C. Wright Mills’s original chapter “The Promise” from “The Sociological Imagination”. For a modern twist, explore “Chavs: The Demonization of the Working Class” by Owen Jones, which connects directly to class and media topics.
Documentaries and films are excellent resources. Watch “The Up Series” (e.g., 63 Up) to see how social class shapes life trajectories. Louis Theroux’s documentaries expose you to subcultures and deviant groups. “The Divide”, inspired by Wilkinson and Pickett’s “The Spirit Level”, explores the impact of inequality. Keep a sociological journal: jot down questions and reactions as you watch and read.
11. Study Skills for Sociology Success |
Succeeding in OCR Sociology requires more than memorising facts. You must develop an evaluative mindset. Always ask: what evidence supports this claim? Which perspective would challenge it? Use the PEEEL structure (Point, Evidence, Explain, Evaluate, Link) to build coherent exam paragraphs. Begin by making clear points, then support them with named sociologists or studies.
Create summary sheets for each topic that link theory, key studies and concepts. Use active recall and spaced repetition rather than passive re-reading. Regularly practise writing short-answer definitions and extended essays under timed conditions. Finally, stay curious: sociology is everywhere. Your summer bridging course begins now—welcome to the discipline!
