Mastering AQA A-Level Economics (Year 13): Exam Technique and Mark Schemes | AQA A-Level

📚 Mastering AQA A-Level Economics (Year 13): Exam Technique and Mark Schemes | AQA A-Level

In Year 13 AQA Economics, achieving top marks requires more than just knowledge of microeconomic and macroeconomic concepts. You must master exam technique and understand how examiners allocate marks across Assessment Objectives (AOs). This guide provides essential strategies for structuring answers to 9-mark, 15-mark, and 25-mark questions, interpreting data, and applying evaluation effectively.

The AQA A-Level Economics examination is built around four Assessment Objectives. AO1 tests knowledge and understanding of economic terminology, concepts, and theories. AO2 requires you to apply this knowledge to specific contexts, including data and real-world examples. AO3 assesses your ability to analyse economic issues through logical chains of reasoning, often supported by diagrams. AO4 evaluates your capacity to make reasoned judgements and provide evaluative comments, weighing up arguments and considering different viewpoints.

The weighting of these AOs varies across question types. The table below shows a typical allocation of marks for the three main question formats you will encounter in Paper 1 and Paper 2 (Paper 3 objective test items have their own pattern). Understanding this breakdown helps you tailor your response to exactly what the examiner is looking for.

Question Type Marks AO1 AO2 AO3 AO4
Explain (9 marks) 9 4 5
Analyse (15 marks) 15 3 4 8
Evaluate (25 marks) 25 5 5 8 7

Notice that evaluation only earns marks in the 25-mark essay, but a strong analysis question answer may include a brief evaluative judgement to demonstrate depth. Always let the command word guide you: ‘explain’ does not require evaluation, while ‘evaluate’ demands it as a priority.

2. Command Words Decoded |

Examiners use specific command words to signal what they expect. ‘Explain’ means you need to give a step-by-step account of how something works or happens, using relevant economic theory and perhaps a diagram. For a 9-mark question, you should provide clear logical chains without digressing into evaluation.

‘Analyse’ requires you to break down a topic into its constituent parts, identify causes and consequences, and show how elements interrelate. Usually you will develop at least two separate chains of analysis, each of 2–3 steps, using a diagram where appropriate and always linking back to the context provided in the data.

‘Evaluate’ goes further: you must weigh up different arguments, consider their strengths and limitations, and arrive at a justified conclusion. A good evaluation uses criteria such as short run vs long run, magnitude of effects, different stakeholders, and reliance on assumptions. Words like ‘depends on’, ‘however’, and ‘on the other hand’ are your allies.

If a question says ‘Discuss’, treat it as analysis plus evaluation. ‘Assess’ and ‘To what extent’ also demand a balanced judgement. Always circle the command word before you begin writing to keep your answer focused.

Assess’和’To what extent’也要求做出平衡的判断。

3. Structure for 9-Mark Questions (Explain) | 9

A 9-mark ‘explain’ question is often part of the context section in Paper 1 or 2. You will be given a stimulus and asked to explain a specific economic phenomenon, for instance ‘Explain why falling consumer confidence may lead to lower GDP growth.’ Your answer should be concise but rigorous.

Start with definitions. Define the key terms immediately – for example, ‘Consumer confidence refers to households’ expectations about future income and employment prospects.’ This secures AO1 marks. Then, provide a clear chain of reasoning: falling confidence leads to reduced consumption, which is a component of aggregate demand (AD = C + I + G + (X − M)), so AD shifts left. Show this on a Keynesian or AD/AS diagram (correctly labelled) to reinforce your analysis.

Next, link to the context. Use a sentence like ‘As illustrated in Extract B, consumer spending fell by 2% in the last quarter, supporting the fall in AD.’ This application of data earns AO2 marks. Avoid adding evaluation – you do not need to say ‘however’ here. Simply explain the mechanism fully, ensuring each step follows logically. Aim to spend about 9–10 minutes writing roughly half a page.

4. Structure for 15-Mark Questions (Analysis) | 15

15-mark analysis questions are often phrased as ‘With the help of a diagram, analyse the impact of a rise in interest rates on the UK housing market.’ These demand deeper analysis and the use of economic diagrams, always drawing on the extracts provided. There are 8 marks for AO3 analysis, so extended chains are essential.

Begin by defining any crucial terms (interest rate, housing market) in one sentence. Then identify at least two distinct transmission mechanisms. For example: higher interest rates raise the cost of mortgages, reducing the demand for housing; this contraction in demand shifts the demand curve left, causing a fall in equilibrium price and quantity. Simultaneously, higher rates increase the cost of construction loans, which may shift supply leftward as builders reduce output. Draw two clear diagrams – one for market demand and supply, and perhaps an AD/AS diagram if you wish to broaden to the economy – and explain each shift.

Weave data into every chain: ‘According to Extract C, the average mortgage rate rose from 2% to 4.5% over two years, which helps explain the 8% drop in transactions mentioned in Extract A.’ The strongest answers use two chains of 3–4 steps each. While a brief evaluative note like ‘However, the magnitude depends on the proportion of variable-rate mortgages’ can show depth, keep it to one sentence – the focus is analysis. Allocate about 20 minutes for this question.

5. Structure for 25-Mark Essay Questions (Evaluate) | 25

The 25-mark essay, found in Section B of Papers 1 and 2, is the most heavily weighted question. It will ask you to evaluate a statement such as ‘Evaluate the view that a reduction in corporation tax is the most effective way to boost investment and economic growth.’ You must produce a balanced, well-structured essay with a clear introduction, two paragraphs supporting the view, two paragraphs challenging it, and a strong evaluative conclusion.

Introduction: Define corporation tax, investment, and economic growth. Then, briefly state your line of argument: ‘While lower corporation tax does create incentives for firms to invest, its effectiveness is significantly constrained by uncertainty, time lags, and the potential crowding out of public investment.’ This roadmap impresses examiners and shows you are evaluating from the start. Paragraph 1 (supporting): Explain using a diagram how a cut in corporation tax increases retained profits, raising expected rates of return and shifting the investment demand curve to the right. Use the accelerator effect and AD/AS to show how investment drives growth. Add data or examples if provided in the extracts.

Paragraph 2 (second supporting point): Argue that lower corporation tax can attract foreign direct investment (FDI), improving the current account and technological transfer. Draw upon comparative statistics if available. Then move to the counter-arguments. Paragraph 3 (challenging): Discuss the limitations – firms might use tax savings for share buybacks rather than productive investment; the impact depends on business confidence, which may be low during a recession. Paragraph 4 (second challenge): Consider the opportunity cost: reduced tax revenue may force cuts in public spending on infrastructure or education, which are also crucial for long-run growth.

Conclusion and evaluation: Do not just summarise. Explicitly weigh up the arguments: ‘The effectiveness of a corporation tax cut is highly contingent on the state of the economy, the prevailing rate of business confidence, and whether leakages such as saving are large. In a buoyant economy, it may work well, but in a liquidity trap, injection is likely to be saved. Therefore, a package of fiscal measures, including targeted investment subsidies, might be more effective.’ Use evaluative terms and award a final degree of agreement – a measured ‘to a moderate extent’ works well. Dedicate about 35–40 minutes to the essay.

6. Using Diagrams Effectively |

Diagrams are a powerful tool for securing AO1 and AO3 marks across all question types. A correctly drawn and labelled diagram can demonstrate understanding and strengthen your analysis chain. In the AQA mark scheme, a diagram without labels or explanation often earns no credit, so precision matters.

Always label both axes (‘Price Level’ and ‘Real GDP’ for AD/AS; ‘Price’ and ‘Quantity’ for micro diagrams). Indicate initial equilibrium points (E₁), and then show the shifts with arrows and new equilibrium (E₂). Use a full title, e.g. ‘Market for housing in the UK’. Explain the movement in the text: ‘The leftward shift of AD from AD₁ to AD₂ leads to a lower price level and a fall in real GDP from Y₁ to Y₂.’ Do not rely on the examiner to interpret your diagram; narrate the story it tells.

Practise drawing diagrams accurately under timed conditions. Common errors include forgetting to shift both AD and SRAS when required, omitting the long-run aggregate supply curve in macro essays, and mislabelling curves. For micro, remember that in some contexts (e.g. negative externalities), you need to show the social cost curve diverging from private cost. Use scrap paper to plan your diagram before committing it to your answer booklet.

7. Data Response Tips (Context Questions) |

Each Paper 1 and 2 includes a context section with two extracts containing written information and quantitative data such as tables, charts, or percentages. The 9-mark and 15-mark questions that follow are linked to this data. Failure to reference the data will severely limit your AO2 marks.

When you first receive the paper, spend 3–4 minutes reading and highlighting the extracts. Look for trends (increasing, decreasing, volatile), significant numbers (a doubling, a sharp drop of 15%), and connections between data and economic theory. For a question on inflation, note the CPI figures in the table; for a trade deficit question, circle the percentage of imports to GDP.

In your answer, use direct quotes or precise references. Instead of ‘Consumer spending fell’, write ‘As Extract A states, consumer spending fell by 1.2% in Q2 2023.’ Instead of ‘The exchange rate depreciated’, write ‘Extract B shows a depreciation of the pound from £1 = $1.35 to £1 = $1.21 over four months, a fall of over 10%.’ Such specific application converts a generic answer into one that hits the top mark bands.

For the 25-mark essay, even if the question is mainly evaluative, reference the extracts in at least two paragraphs to secure the AO2 marks. The context will often hint at the evaluation points you can use – for example, an extract mentioning ‘uncertainty among businesses’ suggests the effectiveness of a policy is limited by confidence.

8. Evaluation – Going Beyond Analysis |

Evaluation is the distinguishing skill that lifts a 15-mark analysis candidate into Band 4 or 5 for the 25-mark essay. It involves making substantiated judgements about the priority, significance, or effectiveness of economic arguments. Memorising a few evaluative frameworks can help you embed evaluation naturally.

Consider the magnitude of effects: how large is the shift? Is the PED for housing highly inelastic, meaning a tax change will barely affect quantity? Introduce time frames: a policy may be effective in the short run but lead to government debt in the long run. Think about stakeholders: consumers might gain lower prices, but producers suffer reduced profits. Are there any unintended consequences? For example, a minimum price for alcohol to reduce consumption may encourage a black market.

Use evaluative phrases like ‘The extent to which this policy works depends on…’, ‘This argument is most valid when…’, ‘A more significant determinant, however, is…’, and ‘The effectiveness is limited by the assumption of ceteris paribus.’ In your conclusion, rank the arguments you have presented and state which you find most convincing, providing a clear reason. Avoid sitting on the fence: ‘It could be, but it could not be’ without justification.

A simple mnemonic to remember is MOPS: Magnitude, Other factors, Perspectives (stakeholders), Short-run vs long-run. Mentally tick through these before you finish your essay to ensure you have covered sufficient evaluation points.

9. Common Mistakes to Avoid |

Many capable students lose marks not through lack of knowledge but through avoidable errors. Recognizing these pitfalls before the exam can dramatically improve your performance.
