1. Tempo & Speed Terms |

Tempo tells us how fast the pulse of the music moves. SQA questions often ask you to identify the Italian term for a given metronome mark or to compare two sections. Start by anchoring the extreme ends: Largo (very slow and broad, roughly 40–60 BPM) and Prestissimo (extremely fast, 200+ BPM). Then build a ladder of five core speeds: Largo → Andante → Moderato → Allegro → Presto. Imagine a walking speed for Andante (literally ‘at a walking pace’) and a cheerful, brisk energy for Allegro (‘cheerful, lively’).

首先要锚定两个极端:Largo(十分缓慢、宽广,约 40–60 BPM)与 Prestissimo(极快,200+ BPM)。 把 Andante(字面意为“行走的速度”)想象成步伐,把 Allegro(“欢快的,活泼的”)想象成愉悦、轻快的活力。

  • Lento – slow, slightly faster than Largo.
  • Adagio – slow and stately, literally ‘at ease’.
  • Adagio –
  • Andantino – slightly faster than Andante; think of it as a brisker walk.
  • Vivace – lively and brisk, between Allegro and Presto.

A handy mnemonic: ‘Lazy And Moderate Alligators Prefer Vivace’ (Largo, Andante, Moderato, Allegro, Presto, Vivace). Note that tempo modifiers like molto (much, very) and poco (a little) appear frequently – Allegro molto means very fast, while Poco adagio means a little slow.

2. Dynamics & Volume |

Dynamics span from a barely audible whisper to a thunderous roar. Memorise the two Italian roots: piano (soft) and forte (loud). Then build outward with prefixes and suffixes. Pianissimo (pp) is very soft; Fortissimo (ff) is very loud. Add mezzo- (‘half’) to get mezzo piano (mp) – moderately soft, and mezzo forte (mf) – moderately loud. A sudden loud accent is sforzando (sfz) – think of it as a ‘surprise force’. The term crescendo (cresc.) means gradually getting louder; imagine a growing wave. Its opposite is diminuendo (dim.) or decrescendo (decresc.), gradually getting softer.

牢牢记住两个意大利根源:piano(柔和的)和 forte(响亮的)。

Draw a dynamic ladder in your mind and physically associate each notch with a hand gesture: closed fist for pp, open palm facing down for p, cupped hand for mp, etc. When listening, ask yourself: is the volume steady, suddenly changing (terraced dynamics, typical of Baroque), or gradually swelling (Romantic era)? Terraced dynamics are often indicated by sudden shifts between f and p without crescendo markings.

3. Articulation & Touch |

Articulation describes how individual notes are attacked and connected. The three core terms are legato (smooth and connected), staccato (short and detached) and accent (a stressed note, usually marked with >). Legato is like gliding on ice, while staccato is like a hot surface you touch and quickly release. Tenuto (marked with a dash) means hold the note for its full value with a slight weight – neither clipped nor accented. Marcato is a stronger, more marked accent; think of ‘marching’ with deliberate emphasis.

三个核心术语是 legato(连贯流畅)、staccato(短促断开)和 accent(强调音,通常标有 >)。

A useful grouping for SQA is to contrast pizzicato (plucked, for string instruments) with arco (bowed). For wind players, tonguing relates to staccato-like separation. The term slur indicates notes played legato under a curved line. When you see a phrase mark over a longer passage, think of it as a musical sentence. For keyboard, una corda (soft pedal) changes timbre and volume, while tre corde indicates releasing the soft pedal.

SQA 中有用的对比是 pizzicato(弦乐器拨奏)与 arco(用弓拉奏)。

4. Expression & Mood Markings |

Beyond tempo and dynamics, composers add expressive directions to convey character. Dolce (sweetly) and cantabile (in a singing style) are frequent in Classical and Romantic periods. Agitato means agitated, while tranquillo means calm. Think of pairs: animato (animated) vs. mesto (sad, mournful); giocoso (playful) vs. grave (serious, solemn). The term espressivo (expressively) often appears where a soloist should bring out the emotion. A great memory trick is to associate each word with a painting or film scene: e.g. ‘dolce’ like a gentle lullaby, ‘agitato’ like a chase scene.

Dolce(甜美的)和 cantabile(如歌地)常见于古典与浪漫主义时期。 可以成对记忆:animato(生机勃勃的)与 mesto(悲伤的);giocoso(嬉戏的)与 grave(严肃的)。术语 espressivo(有表现力地)常出现在独奏者需要展现情感的段落。

Other common markings include con brio (with vigour, e.g. ‘Allegro con brio’), maestoso (majestic), and leggiero (lightly). Pay attention to the suffix –issimo as an intensifier: prestissimo (extremely fast), fortissimo (very loud). SQA often tests recognition of rubato – the expressive stretching and pushing of tempo in Romantic music; think of it as ‘robbed’ time, where the performer gives and takes.

其他常见标记包括 con brio(有活力地,如“Allegro con brio”)、maestoso(庄严地)和 leggiero(轻巧地)。注意后缀 –issimo 作为加强语气的用法:prestissimo(极快),fortissimo(非常响亮)。

5. Form & Structure |

Understanding the blueprint of a piece is vital for the literacy and analysis questions. Start with simple forms: Binary (AB) – two distinct sections, often each repeated. Ternary (ABA) – a sandwich structure where the opening material returns after a contrasting middle. Theme and Variations takes a melody and changes it through altering rhythm, harmony, instrumentation, etc. Rondo (e.g. ABACA) features a recurring main theme (A) alternating with contrasting episodes.

For larger scale works, you will encounter Sonata form, which SQA describes three main sections: Exposition (two contrasting subjects in different keys), Development (playing with motifs, modulating through keys), and Recapitulation (return of subjects, both now in the tonic key). An easy mnemonic is ‘Ex – Dev – Rec’. Also, recognise Through-composed: music that has no repeated sections at all, each verse or stanza set to new music; the opposite of strophic form.

Minuet and Trio (ABA, with the Trio often for three parts or lighter scoring) and Scherzo and Trio (a faster, more playful replacement of the minuet) appear frequently in the Classical symphony. The typical structure of a mass, lieder or concerto should also be revised, but for terminology alone, focus on these labels.

6. Texture & Layers |

Texture describes how many parts are sounding and how they relate. The simplest is monophonic – a single unaccompanied melodic line; think of a solo flute melody or unison chant. Homophonic texture moves in chords where one melody dominates and the other parts provide harmonic support; most hymns and pop songs are homophonic. Polyphonic (or contrapuntal) texture has two or more independent melodic lines woven together; Bach’s fugues are the epitome.

A feature of polyphony is imitation: melodies enter one after another in different voices, often at a different pitch. When a short, repeated pattern is used as a building block, it’s an ostinato – common in Baroque ground basses and minimalism. The term unison describes all voices or instruments playing the same notes at the same pitch (or in octaves). A countermelody is a secondary melody that complements the main tune. Create a texture checklist when you listen: ‘How many layers? Are they independent or chordal? Is there imitation?’

7. Harmony & Tonality |

Harmony vocabulary covers chords, their progressions, and the sense of key. Diatonic harmony stays within the notes of the key; chromatic includes notes outside the key for colour. Modulation is a change of key – SQA expects you to identify it by ear (e.g., major to relative minor). The most common modulations are to the dominant (5th scale degree), subdominant (4th) and relative minor/major. Tonic is the home key note and chord; dominant chord (V) creates tension that resolves to tonic. A pedal note (or pedal point) is a sustained note, usually in the bass, over which changing harmonies occur – sounds like a drone.

Cadences are punctuation marks: perfect cadence (V–I) sounds full and final; imperfect cadence (anything ending on V) feels unfinished, like a comma; plagal cadence (IV–I) is the ‘Amen’ cadence; interrupted cadence (V–vi) is a deceptive surprise. Remember them by impact: Perfect = full stop, Imperfect = comma, Plagal = Amen, Interrupted = plot twist.

Tonality terms: major (bright), minor (sad/serious), modal (using modes, common in folk and jazz), atonal (no key centre), and whole-tone (a scale entirely of whole steps – dreamy, Debussy). For quick recognition, associate minor with a falling third interval (e.g. ‘Greensleeves’) and major with a bright upward 4th leap (e.g. ‘Twinkle Twinkle’).

8. Rhythm & Metre |

Rhythm terminology centres on note values, time signatures, and characteristic patterns. The most common simple metres are 2/4, 3/4, 4/4; compound metres where each beat divides into three are 6/8, 9/8, 12/8. The quaver in compound time gets a lilt – think ‘jig’ for 6/8. A triplet is three notes played in the space of two; notated with a number 3. Syncopation shifts accents to the weak beats or off-beats, creating a funky, unexpected feel – common in ragtime, jazz and Stravinsky. Cross-rhythm superimposes conflicting rhythmic patterns, e.g., triplets against duplets.

Augmentation means lengthening note values (doubling), often used in fugues; diminution shortens them (halving). A hemiola is a Baroque device giving the feeling of shifting from 3/4 to 2/4 by accenting two dotted crotchet groupings in 3/4 time. A pause or fermata (like an upside-down bird’s eye) extends a note or rest. For SQA listening, tap the steady beat and note which syllables or hits fall off the strong beats to identify syncopation.

9. Pitch & Intervals |

Understanding how far apart notes are is essential for describing melody and harmony. The smallest standard interval is a semitone (half step). A tone is two semitones. Microtone refers to intervals smaller than a semitone – used in some contemporary and non-Western music. Intervals are named by their number (2nd, 3rd, etc.) and quality: perfect, major, minor, augmented, diminished. Key intervals for rapid recognition: minor 2nd (Jaws theme – tension), perfect 5th (Twinkle Twinkle first two notes or Star Wars), octave (Somewhere Over the Rainbow – the ‘some-where’ leap).

A glissando is a slide from one pitch to another – continuous pitch movement, common in harp, trombone and jazz. Portamento is a vocal slide. The term tessitura describes the most comfortable range of a voice or instrument. Range is the entire span from lowest to highest note. In a melody, conjunct motion moves by step; disjunct motion moves by leap. The contour can be described as arch-shaped, wavelike, ascending, descending, etc.

10. Timbre & Instruments |

Timbre is the unique tone colour that distinguishes a violin from a flute even when playing the same pitch. Essential families: strings (violin, viola, cello, double bass), woodwind (flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon), brass (trumpet, French horn, trombone, tuba), percussion (tuned: timpani, xylophone; untuned: cymbals, snare drum). Key vocal ranges from high to low: soprano, mezzo-soprano, alto, tenor, baritone, bass. A countertenor is a male voice singing in the alto/soprano range using falsetto.

Common instrumental techniques: tremolo – rapid repetition of a single note (strings) or alternating between two notes. Trill – rapid alternation between two adjacent notes. Pizzicato – plucking strings. Arco – bowed. Con sordino – with mute. Flutter-tonguing – a rolled ‘r’ effect on wind instruments. Electronic terms: reverb, delay, distortion, synthesiser, multitrack recording. SQA often asks you to identify instruments and playing techniques in a recorded excerpt, so pair each term with a distinctive sound memory.
