📚 Year 12 AQA Media Studies: Core Knowledge Overview | AQA 12
Welcome to your Year 12 AQA Media Studies journey. This subject explores how media texts construct and reflect reality, shape identities and influence society. At the heart of the AQA specification is a set of core theoretical frameworks and a range of Close Study Products (CSPs) that you will use to apply your understanding. The course is built around four key areas – media language, representation, audience and industry – and a rich body of theory that you must learn to apply fluently in your analysis.
1. The Theoretical Framework: Language, Representation, Audience, Industries |
The AQA specification is built around four interrelated key concepts: media language, representation, audience and industry. Every Close Study Product must be analysed through these lenses; they are not separate topics but interlocking dimensions of any media text. For example, a magazine front cover can be deconstructed semiotically (language), examined for its portrayal of gender (representation), interpreted in terms of reader engagement (audience) and contextualised by its publisher’s ownership and business model (industry).
These concepts trace their origins to influential theorists such as Barthes, Hall, Butler and Curran & Seaton. They encourage you to deconstruct the naturalised meanings that media texts present and to question how dominant ideologies are maintained or challenged. Throughout Year 12, you will develop the habit of seamlessly weaving together language, representation, audience and industry whenever you write about a media product.
2. Semiotics and Structuralism |
Roland Barthes’ semiotics teaches that signs are composed of a signifier (the form, such as an image or word) and a signified (the mental concept). The first layer of meaning is denotation – the literal, descriptive level – while connotation carries cultural associations and emotional charge. Barthes went further by introducing the concept of myth: the process by which cultural values and ideologies are made to appear natural and universally true, when in fact they serve specific interests.
Claude Levi-Strauss argued that narratives and cultural meanings are structured through binary oppositions (e.g. good/evil, civilisation/wilderness, young/old). Media texts often reinforce or subvert these oppositions to create dramatic tension and convey ideological positions. Applying structuralism to a crime drama, for instance, you might explore how the binary of lawbreaker/law enforcer is represented and whether the text offers any nuance.
In the exam, you will be expected to move beyond simply spotting denotation and connotation; you need to show how myths are constructed around themes such as success, technology or national identity. For example, an advertising campaign may turn a smartphone into a mythic signifier of personal freedom. Identifying these processes is a core semiotic skill.
3. Narrative and Genre Analysis |
Tzvetan Todorov proposed a narrative structure of equilibrium, disruption, recognition, attempt to repair and new equilibrium. Many mainstream film and television episodes follow this pattern, and even nonlinear narratives can be understood as variations on the equilibrium cycle. Analysing a CSP through Todorov’s lens helps you uncover how order is restored and what values are prioritised in the resolution.
Steve Neale suggests that genres are defined by the interplay of repetition and difference. Audiences derive pleasure from familiar conventions (e.g. the chase sequence in an action film) but also appreciate innovation that prevents the genre from becoming stale. Genre hybridisation – mixing horror with comedy, for example – and subversion of expectations are common strategies, and you should discuss how a CSP upholds or plays with its genre identity.
