📚 Year 12 CCEA Philosophy: Core Knowledge Overview | CCEA 12

Year 12 CCEA Philosophy introduces students to the foundational questions of human existence through the lens of the Philosophy of Religion and Ethics. The AS specification challenges learners to analyse classical arguments for the existence of God, grapple with the persistent problem of evil and suffering, and examine the nature and limits of religious language. Alongside this, students engage critically with major ethical theories such as Utilitarianism, Kantian ethics and Virtue Ethics, applying these frameworks to contemporary moral issues including euthanasia, abortion and free will. To succeed, it is essential to develop a crisp understanding of each argument, its key proponents and the main criticisms levelled against it, as well as the ability to evaluate these ideas in a balanced and structured essay.

1. The Cosmological Argument |

The Cosmological Argument seeks to prove God’s existence from the undeniable fact that the universe exists. Its classical formulation is found in Aquinas’ first three of the Five Ways, which argue from motion, cause and contingency. Aquinas reasoned that an infinite regress of movers, causes or dependent beings is impossible, so a first unmoved mover, first uncaused cause or a necessary being (God) must ground the chain. The Kalam version, championed by William Lane Craig, draws on the beginning of the universe to argue for a personal creator who freely brought the cosmos into being. Leibniz’s principle of sufficient reason similarly insists that every contingent fact requires a complete explanation, which ultimately terminates in a necessary being.

Critics target the argument’s key assumptions. Hume objected that we have no experience of universe-making, so the causal principle cannot be extended beyond the world. He also challenged the move from ‘everything has a cause’ to ‘the universe as a whole has a cause’. Bertrand Russell famously stated that the universe is ‘just there, and that’s all’, dismissing the demand for a total explanation. Moreover, even if a first cause is accepted, the argument does not demonstrate that this cause possesses the attributes of the God of classical theism, such as omnibenevolence or omniscience.

2. The Teleological Argument |

The Teleological Argument, or argument from design, infers an intelligent designer from the apparent order, purpose and complexity found in the natural world. William Paley’s watchmaker analogy remains the most iconic illustration: if you find a watch on a heath, its intricate arrangement of parts for a purpose compels you to infer a watchmaker. Similarly, the exquisite adaptations of biological organisms point to a divine designer. Modern forms include the fine-tuning argument, which notes that the fundamental physical constants of the universe appear precisely calibrated to permit life, leading many to posit a cosmic architect.

David Hume’s criticisms, written before Darwin, are still powerful. In Dialogues Concerning Natural Religion, Hume argued that the world more closely resembles a vegetable than a machine, that a design inference does not lead to the all-perfect God of theism, and that the evils in nature suggest an apprentice god or a committee of deities. The most significant scientific challenge is evolution by natural selection: Darwin demonstrated that complex adaptations can arise through blind, gradual processes without any designer. Richard Dawkins insists that natural selection is a ‘blind watchmaker’, achieving design-like outcomes through random mutation and differential survival.

3. The Ontological Argument |

Unlike a posteriori arguments, the Ontological Argument attempts to deduce God’s existence from the very concept of God, making it an a priori proof. Anselm of Canterbury defined God as ‘that than which nothing greater can be conceived’. He argued that if this being exists only in the mind, we could conceive of an even greater being that also exists in reality. Since the greatest conceivable being must exist both in the mind and in reality, God necessarily exists. Descartes later defended a version claiming that existence is a perfection, and a supremely perfect being therefore must possess the perfection of existence.

Gaunilo parodied Anselm by imagining a perfect lost island that must exist by the same logic, a reductio ad absurdum that exposes the argument’s form. Immanuel Kant produced the most influential rejection: existence is not a real predicate or a property that can be added to the concept of a thing. A hundred real thalers do not contain any more conceptual content than a hundred possible thalers; positing existence does not enlarge the concept. Thus, God cannot be defined into existence. Many philosophers accept that the argument fails to move from the realm of ideas to reality, though Alvin Plantinga’s modal version using possible worlds continues to generate scholarly debate.

4. The Problem of Evil and Suffering |

The problem of evil is often cited as the most powerful objection to belief in an omnipotent, omnibenevolent God. J.L. Mackie formalised the logical problem: the three propositions ‘God is omnipotent’, ‘God is wholly good’ and ‘evil exists’ are logically inconsistent. If God is willing to prevent evil but cannot, He is not omnipotent; if He can but is not willing, He is not wholly good. For a logically necessary being, such a contradiction would be fatal, so theists must show that the conjunction is not logically impossible.

Classical theodicies attempt to justify God’s permission of evil. Augustine’s theodicy argued that evil is not a substance but a privation of good, resulting from the misuse of free will by angels and humans. This fall led to a corrupted world where suffering is a just penalty. Irenaeus, developed by John Hick, offers a soul-making theodicy: God allows evil and suffering to enable human beings to grow morally and spiritually into the likeness of God, ultimately achieving the greater good of a freely chosen relationship. However, critics point out that these theodicies struggle to account for the sheer amount and distribution of suffering, particularly the suffering of animals and innocent children. Process theology takes a different route, limiting God’s power so that He does not control all events, thus absolving God of direct responsibility for evil.

5. Religious Experience and Miracles |

Many believers ground their faith in direct personal experience of the divine. William James identified four marks of a mystical experience: ineffability, noetic quality, transiency and passivity. Swinburne’s principle of credulity suggests that, in the absence of special considerations, things are probably as they seem to be; therefore, religious experiences should be taken as genuine perceptions of a divine reality unless there is good reason to think otherwise. However, the diversity of religious experiences across faiths poses a challenge: if a Christian experiences the presence of Jesus while a Hindu experiences Krishna, they cannot all be veridical in the same straightforward way.

Miracles are often understood as extraordinary events caused by divine intervention. Hume offered a decisive empirical challenge, defining a miracle as a violation of the laws of nature and arguing that uniform human experience establishes these laws so firmly that it is always more probable that the testimony of a miracle is mistaken than that a law of nature was violated. Modern theologians sometimes reinterpret miracles not as suspensions of natural law but as revelatory signs that transform a situation’s meaning, as seen in the work of John Polkinghorne. Yet for many, the evidential value of miracles remains tied to the strength of the testimony and the lack of natural explanation.

6. Religious Language: Verification and Falsification |

The meaningfulness of religious statements was radically questioned in the 20th century by logical positivists. A.J. Ayer’s verification principle insisted that a statement is factually meaningful only if it can be verified through sense experience or is a tautology. Since ‘God exists’ or ‘God loves us’ cannot be empirically verified, Ayer concluded that such utterances are literally meaningless. The weak verification principle, allowing indirect verifiability, proved problematic, as any statement might be made verifiable by supplementary propositions, effectively defeating the criterion.

Antony Flew applied Karl Popper’s falsification principle to religious language. He argued that religious believers so qualify their statements with qualifications that they ‘die the death of a thousand qualifications’, rendering their assertions unfalsifiable and thus cognitively empty. R.M. Hare responded with the concept of a ‘blik’ — a non-verifiable, non-falsifiable interpretation of experience that shapes how a person views the world; religious beliefs function like fundamental bliks. Basil Mitchell offered a parable showing that faith commitments can be genuinely cognitive even under unanswered questions, as believers trust in God despite counter-evidence. The debate highlights whether religious language expresses facts about reality, moral attitudes or a unique form of life.

7. Utilitarianism: Bentham and Mill |

Utilitarianism is a consequentialist ethical theory asserting that the right action is the one that produces the greatest happiness for the greatest number. Jeremy Bentham’s act utilitarianism employs the hedonic calculus to measure pleasure and pain across seven dimensions: intensity, duration, certainty, propinquity, fecundity, purity and extent. This democratic, quantitative approach aimed to ground morality on an objective, scientific basis. However, critics condemn it as a ‘pig philosophy’ that reduces all pleasures to mere sensations and could justify deeply unjust actions, such as punishing an innocent person if it maximises overall utility.

John Stuart Mill sought to refine Bentham’s theory by distinguishing higher pleasures (intellectual and moral) from lower pleasures (bodily). He famously wrote that it is ‘better to be a human being dissatisfied than a pig satisfied’. Mill’s rule utilitarianism considers the long-run utility of following general rules, such as ‘do not lie’, rather than calculating each act individually. This mitigates some injustice worries but raises problems of consistency and collapse into act utilitarianism. Strong rule utilitarianism, which never breaks a justified rule, avoids some pitfalls but can seem rigid and counterintuitive when breaking a rule would clearly produce far more happiness.

8. Kantian Deontological Ethics |

Immanuel Kant’s ethics centres on duty rather than consequences. He argues that the only unqualifiedly good thing is a good will, which acts from the motive of duty, not from inclination, self-interest or even compassion. Moral actions are performed out of respect for the moral law, which is expressed through the categorical imperative — an unconditional command that applies to all rational beings. Kant provides several formulations, the most prominent being the Formula of Universal Law: ‘Act only on that maxim through which you can at the same time will that it should become a universal law.’

The second key formula, the Formula of Humanity, demands that we treat humanity, whether in ourselves or others, always as an end in itself and never merely as a means. This grounds an absolute prohibition on lying, breaking promises, cheating and exploitation, irrespective of the beneficial outcomes. Critics like W.D. Ross worry about conflicts of duties: if a would-be murderer asks where your friend is hiding, telling a lie seems obligatory, yet Kant seems to forbid it. Others find the system overly rationalistic and neglectful of the emotional dimension of moral life championed by virtue ethicists. Nevertheless, Kant’s emphasis on universal human dignity continues to powerfully shape debates on human rights and justice.

9. Virtue Ethics: Aristotle |

Virtue Ethics shifts the focus from ‘What should I do?’ to ‘What kind of person should I be?’ Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics argues that the ultimate human good is eudaimonia — often translated as flourishing or wellbeing — achieved by living a life of virtue in accordance with reason. Virtues are stable character traits that lie at the golden mean between two vices of excess and deficiency. For example, courage is the mean between rashness and cowardice; generosity lies between wastefulness and meanness.

Acquiring virtue requires habituation and practical wisdom (phronesis): we become just by doing just acts, courageous by performing courageous deeds. A virtuous person perceives the right action in a given situation and acts for the right reason, finding pleasure in noble conduct. Critics note that the doctrine of the mean can seem unhelpfully vague in hard cases and that virtue ethics does not provide clear action-guidance in moral dilemmas. Furthermore, Alasdair MacIntyre and others highlight that any account of virtue relies on a particular conception of human purpose, which makes virtue ethics culturally contingent. Despite this, its emphasis on moral development and community restores a human-centred dimension often missing from rule-based theories.

10. Applied Ethics: Euthanasia and Abortion |

Euthanasia and abortion invite the application of ethical theories to deeply personal and contentious issues. In the euthanasia debate, the sanctity of life principle, often rooted in the belief that life is a gift from God, is contrasted with the quality of life principle, which focuses on the individual’s autonomy and capacity for meaningful existence. Voluntary active euthanasia remains illegal in most of the UK, though some argue that respecting a person’s wish to die with dignity is a profound expression of compassion and autonomy. Utilitarians may support euthanasia if it reduces net suffering, while Kantians might emphasise the categorical duty to never kill an innocent person, even for mercy.

Abortion pivots around the moral status of the foetus and the rights of the pregnant person. A common argument for a woman’s right to choose rests on bodily autonomy, famously illustrated by Judith Jarvis Thomson’s violinist analogy — even if the foetus is a person, the mother is not obliged to sustain it with her body against her will. Opponents focus on the personhood of the unborn from conception, citing potentiality and genetic humanity. The UK law permits abortion before 24 weeks on broad medical and social grounds. Ethical theories divide: a utilitarian might weigh the interests of the woman, the foetus and society, while situation ethics would insist that agapeic love determines the most loving outcome in each unique case.

11. Free Will and Moral Responsibility |

Free will is central to moral philosophy because it underpins the notion of moral responsibility. Hard determinists assert that all events, including human choices, are the inevitable result of prior causes; therefore, free will is an illusion and moral responsibility is unjustified. Libertarians, in contrast, maintain that we do have free will, often appealing to a non-physical agent capable of initiating uncaused actions. Compatibilists (soft determinists) attempt to reconcile determinism and free will by redefining freedom as acting according to one’s own desires without external constraint, even if those desires are themselves determined.

Neuroscientific experiments, such as those by Benjamin Libet, challenge libertarian intuitions by showing that unconscious brain activity associated with a decision arises before our conscious awareness of deciding. This suggests that our sense of free choice might be a post-hoc rationalisation. From a religious angle, the tension between divine foreknowledge and human free will presents a theological puzzle: if God knows infallibly what we will do tomorrow, it seems we cannot do otherwise, yet Scripture often holds humans accountable for their actions. Calvin’s predestination and Arminius’s conditional election illustrate contrasting approaches within Christianity to this enduring dilemma.

12. Conscience: Psychological and Religious Views |

The concept of conscience has been analysed both as a God-given moral faculty and as a product of psychological development. In religious thought, Thomas Aquinas described conscience (synderesis) as the innate human capacity to grasp the fundamental principles of good and evil, applied through conscientia to specific acts. Joseph Butler elevated conscience to a supreme governing principle placed by God in human nature, which intuitively approves or condemns our actions and must always be obeyed.
