Year 12 CCEA Philosophy: Summer Preparation and Bridging Course | CCEA 12

📚 Year 12 CCEA Philosophy: Summer Preparation and Bridging Course | CCEA 12

Moving from GCSE to A-Level Philosophy is a significant step, demanding not just factual recall but genuine critical analysis and argumentative writing. This summer bridging course is designed to introduce you to the core themes, skills and expectations of the CCEA Year 12 Philosophy specification, so that you can start the new academic year with confidence and a clear roadmap. We will explore the structure of the course, key topics in philosophy of religion and ethics, and effective revision strategies.

1. Course Structure and Assessment in CCEA AS Philosophy | CCEA AS哲学课程结构与评估

The CCEA GCE Religious Studies AS qualification consists of two externally assessed units. Unit AS 1 covers the Philosophy of Religion, while Unit AS 2 introduces Ethics. Each unit is examined by a 1 hour 20 minute written paper, and together they make up 40% of the full A-Level if you continue to A2. You will be expected to demonstrate sound knowledge and understanding (AO1) as well as the ability to critically evaluate and construct arguments (AO2).

The assessment objectives are weighted as follows:

Assessment Objective Weighting in AS Description
AO1 50% Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of religion and belief, including influences on individuals, communities and societies.
AO2 50% Analyse and evaluate aspects of religion and belief, including their significance and influence.

This 50:50 split shows that being able to argue and evaluate is just as important as knowing the material. Your summer preparation should therefore focus on practicing both.

2. What Makes A-Level Philosophy Different? | A-Level

At GCSE level you may have been asked to describe religious beliefs and give reasons for them. A-Level Philosophy goes much further: you must analyse the coherence of arguments, identify weaknesses, compare opposing viewpoints and reach justified conclusions. The subject is less about ‘what’ people believe and more about ‘why’ they believe it and whether their reasons stand up to scrutiny.

You will frequently encounter technical philosophical terms, such as a priori, a posteriori, inductive, deductive, analytic and synthetic. Learning to use this terminology precisely will not only improve your essay writing but also sharpen your thinking. During summer, start building a glossary of key terms – it will be your best friend when tackling exam questions.

3. Essential Terminology for Philosophy of Religion |

Before diving into the arguments, it is vital to understand the logical categories that shape philosophical debate. An a priori argument is one that does not depend on sense experience (e.g., mathematical truths), while an a posteriori argument relies on evidence from the world. Similarly, inductive arguments aim to show that a conclusion is probable, whereas deductive arguments aim for certainty – if the premises are true, the conclusion must follow.

Also crucial are the concepts of coherence (internal consistency of a set of beliefs) and correspondence (does a belief match reality?). When evaluating arguments for God’s existence, you will frequently ask: Is the argument logically coherent? Does it correspond to our experience of the world? Keeping these meta-concepts active in your mind will transform how you approach every topic.

4. The Cosmological Argument: First Cause |

One of the most traditional arguments for God’s existence is the cosmological argument, which is a posteriori and inductive. Thomas Aquinas proposed the ‘First Cause’ argument as part of his Five Ways: the universe contains a sequence of cause and effect; this sequence cannot regress infinitely; therefore, there must be a first uncaused cause, which is God. The argument appeals to our intuition that nothing comes from nothing.

However, David Hume challenged the assumption that every event needs a cause, and argued that even if the universe had a beginning, we cannot infer a personal, benevolent God. Bertrand Russell later countered that the universe may simply be a ‘brute fact’. In your CCEA exam, you will need to weigh the strengths and weaknesses of these objections, rather than merely recount them.

5. The Design Argument: Evidence of Order |

The design argument, or teleological argument, points to the apparent order, complexity and purpose in the natural world as evidence for an intelligent designer. William Paley’s watchmaker analogy illustrates this: if you found a watch on a heath, its intricate parts working together for a purpose would compel you to infer a watchmaker. Similarly, the complexity of the eye or the fine-tuning of cosmic constants seems to suggest a designer.

David Hume’s criticisms, set out in his Dialogues Concerning Natural Religion, remain powerful. He noted that the universe might be more like a vegetable or a random ordering of particles than a machine; that imperfections in nature point to an amateur designer; and that even if a designer exists, it does not prove the God of classical theism. The post-Darwinian era adds the challenge of natural selection, which can explain apparent design without a designer.

6. The Ontological Argument: An A Priori Proof |

Unlike the previous arguments, the ontological argument is a priori and deductive. Anselm of Canterbury defined God as ‘that than which nothing greater can be conceived’. He argued that if such a being exists only in the mind, it would not be the greatest conceivable being, because a being that exists both in the mind and in reality is greater. Therefore, God must exist in reality. This argument attempts to deduce God’s existence purely from the concept of God.

Gaunilo responded with his famous ‘Lost Island’ parody: one could define the most perfect island, and by Anselm’s logic it must exist, which is absurd. Immanuel Kant later argued that ‘existence is not a predicate’ – adding ‘exists’ to the concept of God does not add anything to the concept itself, so the argument fails. These objections form the backbone of AO2 evaluation questions on the ontological argument.

7. The Problem of Evil: Logical and Evidential |

The problem of evil is perhaps the greatest challenge to belief in an omnipotent, omnibenevolent God. Philosophers distinguish between the logical problem – the claim that the existence of evil is logically incompatible with the existence of such a God – and the evidential problem, which argues that the sheer amount and distribution of evil and suffering make God’s existence highly improbable.

Theodicies attempt to reconcile God and evil. The Augustinian theodicy sees evil as a privation of good and the result of the Fall; suffering is a just punishment. The Irenaean theodicy views evil as necessary for soul-making – turning humans into mature, free beings. The free will defence emphasises that genuine free will inevitably opens the possibility of moral evil, but that it is better to have free will than to be automata.

8. Religious Experience: Types and Challenges |

Many believers point to religious experiences as direct evidence of the divine. CCEA distinguishes between corporate experiences (shared by a group, such as the Toronto Blessing) and individual experiences, which can be mystical (a sense of union with the divine), numinous (an overwhelming awe-inspiring feeling, as described by Rudolf Otto), or conversion experiences. Richard Swinburne’s principle of credulity argues that if it seems to someone that God is present, then God is probably present, unless there are defeaters.

Psychological challenges, such as those from Freud (seeing religion as a projection of infantile wishes) and Marx (as an opium of the people), argue that religious experiences are illusory. Neuroscientific studies also suggest that mystical states can be induced by brain stimulation or temporal lobe epilepsy. In your essays, you must evaluate whether such naturalistic explanations rule out the possibility that religious experiences genuinely refer to a transcendent reality.

9. Miracles: Hume and Contemporary Debate |

A miracle is often defined as a remarkable event brought about by God that violates the laws of nature. David Hume offered a classic definition – ‘a transgression of a law of nature by a particular volition of the Deity’ – and argued that we can never rationally believe in a miracle because the evidence against the uniformity of nature will always outweigh the testimony for a miracle. His evidential argument hinges on the reliability of witnesses and the likelihood of natural law being suspended.

Later thinkers, such as Maurice Wiles, objected that a God who intervenes selectively to perform small miracles would be arbitrary and morally questionable – why heal one person but allow millions to die in disasters? The CCEA specification expects you to engage with the debate over whether the concept of miracle remains credible in a scientific age, and to assess the strengths of both Humean and more contemporary objections.

10. Introduction to Ethics: Teleological and Deontological |

While the main focus of this bridging course is philosophy of religion, the CCEA AS Ethics unit forms an integral part of Year 12 Philosophy. You will study teleological theories, where the rightness of an action is judged by its consequences. Utilitarianism, developed by Jeremy Bentham and refined by John Stuart Mill, is the prime example: the principle of utility demands the greatest happiness for the greatest number. In contrast, deontological ethics, notably Kant’s categorical imperative, holds that certain actions are intrinsically right or wrong, regardless of consequences.

Situation ethics, proposed by Joseph Fletcher, offers a middle way, placing love (agape) as the only absolute principle and permitting rules to be set aside if love demands it. Understanding the dialectic between these approaches will not only prepare you for Unit AS 2 but also enrich your philosophical skills, as the ethical theories themselves are subject to rigorous meta-ethical reflection.

11. Tips for Summer Preparation |

Start by getting hold of a good introductory text, such as ‘Philosophy of Religion for AS’ or the CCEA-endorsed textbook by Saxbee and Cush. Read the chapters on the arguments for God’s existence and take concise notes. Next, create a set of summary cards for each argument, including its core premises, strengths and three main criticisms. This will make revision much easier later.

Practice writing a short essay plan each week. For example, ‘Critically evaluate the design argument for the existence of God.’ Draw up a balanced plan with arguments for and against, and then write a single paragraph of evaluation. This habit will build both your analytical writing skills and your confidence. Also, watch online lectures from university philosophy departments – many are freely available and will deepen your understanding.

12. Recommended Resources |

Below is a suggested reading and resource list to support your summer study. The combination of textbooks, primary texts and digital material will provide a solid foundation for the course.

  • CCEA AS Religious Studies: An Introduction to the Philosophy of Religion by Gordon Reid and Sarah Tyler (official textbook).
  • The Puzzle of God by Peter Vardy – accessible and excellent for developing evaluation skills.
  • Dialogues Concerning Natural Religion by David Hume – primary text for the design argument.
  • Online: Website of ‘Philosophy Dungeon’ (philosophydungeon.co.uk) for engaging summaries.
  • Podcasts: ‘The Panpsycast Philosophy Podcast’ episodes on the cosmological, design and ontological arguments.

Remember, the summer is an opportunity to explore philosophy at your own pace. Approach the material with curiosity, and do not be afraid to question everything – that, after all, is the essence of philosophy.
