1. Defining Knowledge: JTB and the Gettier Problem | 知识的定义:JTB 与葛梯尔问题

Knowledge is traditionally analysed as ‘justified true belief’ (JTB). On this account, a person S knows that proposition P if and only if:

  • P is true.
  • S believes that P.
  • S is justified in believing that P.

However, Edmund Gettier’s famous counterexamples show that JTB is not sufficient for knowledge. In one case, Smith has strong evidence that Jones will get a job and that Jones has ten coins in his pocket. Smith deduces the proposition ‘The man who will get the job has ten coins in his pocket.’ Unbeknown to Smith, he himself gets the job and also happens to have ten coins in his pocket. Smith’s belief is justified and true, yet it is only accidentally true and does not count as knowledge.

2. Rationalism and Empiricism: Sources of Knowledge |

Rationalism holds that reason is the primary source of knowledge, and that at least some concepts or truths are innate. Key rationalists, such as Descartes and Leibniz, argue that sense experience is unreliable and that genuine knowledge arises from rational intuition and deduction.

Empiricism, by contrast, claims that all knowledge derives from sensory experience. The mind at birth is a tabula rasa (blank slate) upon which experience writes. Locke, Berkeley, and Hume are foundational empiricists. A central debate concerns whether we can have synthetic a priori knowledge — knowledge that is informative yet not dependent on experience. Kant attempted to reconcile the two traditions by arguing that the mind imposes innate categories on experience, thus making synthetic a priori judgements possible.

3. Perception: Direct Realism, Indirect Realism, and Idealism |

Direct realism is the common‑sense view that we perceive physical objects directly as they are. When you look at a tree, you are directly aware of the tree itself. Challenges include illusions and hallucinations, which suggest that what we experience is not always the object itself.

Indirect realism (or representationalism) claims that we perceive sense‑data — mental representations caused by external objects. The object itself exists independently but is perceived indirectly via these representations. A major difficulty is the ‘veil of perception’: if we only ever know sense‑data, how can we be sure physical objects exist or resemble our perceptions?

Idealism, famously associated with Berkeley, argues that physical objects are nothing more than collections of ideas. To exist is to be perceived (esse est percipi). The universe is a coherent set of ideas held in the mind of God. Critics question the persistence of objects when nobody observes them and the explanation of shared public objects.

4. Utilitarianism: Bentham and Mill |

Utilitarianism is a consequentialist ethical theory holding that the right action is the one that produces the greatest happiness for the greatest number. Jeremy Bentham proposed a quantitative hedonic calculus that measures pleasure by factors such as intensity, duration, certainty, propinquity, fecundity, purity, and extent. He treated all pleasures as equal in quality.

John Stuart Mill refined utilitarianism by introducing a qualitative distinction between higher pleasures (intellectual, moral) and lower pleasures (bodily). Mill argued that those who have experienced both prefer higher pleasures, and this constitutes their greater value. He famously wrote, ‘It is better to be a human being dissatisfied than a pig satisfied; better to be Socrates dissatisfied than a fool satisfied.’ Utilitarianism faces objections: it can seem to ignore justice and individual rights, it is overly demanding, and happiness aggregation is difficult to measure and compare between persons.

5. Kantian Deontology: The Categorical Imperative |

Immanuel Kant’s deontological ethics focuses on duty and the intrinsic rightness of actions, not consequences. The only unqualified good is a good will — the will to act from duty out of respect for the moral law. Kant formulates the categorical imperative in several ways. The first formulation is the universal law: ‘Act only according to that maxim whereby you can at the same time will that it should become a universal law.’ To test a maxim, we check for contradictions in conception or in the will. The second formulation is the formula of humanity: ‘Act in such a way that you treat humanity, whether in your own person or in the person of another, always at the same time as an end and never simply as a means.’ This forbids using persons merely for our purposes and demands respect for rational agency.

The following table summarises key contrasts between utilitarianism and Kantian deontology:

Aspect Utilitarianism Kantian Deontology
Focus Consequences / happiness Duty / moral law
Moral worth Outcome maximises utility Action done from duty, good will
Persons Impersonal aggregation of preferences Always as ends, never mere means
Key challenges Justice, demandingness, measurement Conflicting duties, rigidity, abstraction

6. Virtue Ethics: Aristotle |

Aristotelian virtue ethics shifts the focus from right actions or their consequences to the character of the agent. The ultimate goal is eudaimonia — flourishing or living well. Virtues are character traits that enable human beings to achieve eudaimonia; they lie in a mean between extremes. For example, courage is the mean between cowardice (deficiency) and rashness (excess). Practical wisdom (phronesis) is the intellectual virtue that discerns the mean in specific situations. Critics point out that the doctrine of the mean can be vague, that virtues may conflict (e.g., honesty vs. kindness), and that it presupposes a contested conception of human function.

7. The Teleological (Design) Argument |

The design argument infers the existence of God from perceived order, purpose, and complexity in the natural world. William Paley’s classic analogy compares the universe to a watch: if one stumbles upon a watch, its intricate parts working together for a purpose compel the conclusion that it has a maker. Likewise, the far greater complexity of the natural world points to a divine designer. Hume, through the character Philo, raised powerful criticisms: the universe might be more like a living organism than a machine; it could have resulted from many blind trials; and even if a designer existed, the argument does not establish the perfect God of theism. After Darwin, natural selection offers a non‑purposive explanation for biological complexity, weakening the design inference.

8. The Cosmological Argument |

Cosmological arguments aim to establish a first cause or necessary being to explain why the universe exists. Aquinas’ ‘Five Ways’ include: the argument from motion — whatever is moved must be moved by another, leading to an unmoved mover; the argument from efficient causality — there cannot be an infinite regress of causes, so there must be a first uncaused cause; and the argument from contingency — contingent beings require a necessary being to ground their existence. Hume and Russell challenge the cosmological argument by asking why the regress must stop at God. Could the universe itself be the necessary being? Russell famously described the universe as ‘just there, and that’s all’. Moreover, even if a first cause is accepted, it need not have the attributes of a theistic God.

9. The Ontological Argument |

The ontological argument is an a priori attempt to prove God’s existence from the concept of God alone. Anselm defines God as ‘that than which nothing greater can be conceived’. If God exists only in the understanding, we could conceive a being that exists both in the understanding and in reality — which would be greater. Therefore, God must exist in reality. Descartes offers a similar argument: existence is a perfection, so a supremely perfect being necessarily possesses existence. Kant’s objection remains highly influential: he argues that existence is not a real predicate — it does not add anything to the concept of a thing. The ontological argument continues to generate intense philosophical debate about whether existence can be part of a definition.
